  • guys i got a question i would really appriciate it if you answered it. one of my favorite drummers is dave grohl and im trying to figure out what technique he ues for his bass drum . if you got to ( bassically type dave grohl dw drums and youl see it. can someone explain what technique hes using PLEASE lol i dont know if its heel toe or what???? he said that he pounces at the pedal with the ball of his foot and sits down low to get more power???

  • when he breaks it down he's doing toe-toe but when he's playing it looks like heel-toe. it's less of an actual "drop and pick-up your foot to get the next beat" but the middle of your foot get's the first beat and you FOLLOW THROUGH by almost rolling up to your to toe to get the second beat. I would watch the whole video if I had the time but I don't feel free to let me know if that is explained anywhere else in the video.

  • the new studiois is sooooooooo much better than this

  • Anyone here a Zach hill fan? LOL

  • Thank you

  • what's better for double bass??? slide technique or heel-toe?

  • @kyriacos93b It's prefferance

  • which one is better??? or it really dont matter...??

  • im goin to sleep over here these guys r so boring

  • lol sometimes when i play with slacks the pedal gets caught in my pant leg lol

  • you guys should mic your drums. They sound like shit.

  • I got some problems with my bass drum. I've tried both techniques but when i do double-strokes it kind of bounces so it only hit once on the bass drum or twice but the second one is very sloppy. Don't know really how to describe it well but does anyone but maybe someone recognize the problem? I've tried changing the tension on the pedal a bit but haven't really seen any difference. It's like it bouncing on the bass drum head!! waah

  • @Villiaam Sounds like you are trying to bury the beater on the second hit, but it is bouncing? Not sure without seeing it or a better description, so my first advice is to slow down until you have clean even strokes. I also might suggest just focusing on one technique for awhile and then switching. I am a ski instructor not a drum instructor, but from what I have learned, both involve trained muscle memory and trying to learn too many techniques in a close period of time can be confusing.

  • @RocknRollmartian13 Ye but the weird thing is that it sounds good on another set, no sloppy second hit there. So thats why i think it has to do with the pedal-settings or bass drumhead tension to do!, its hard to explain the problem :(

Yeah ive always been doing the sliding technique so i have decided to keep on doing that one.

  • I think the guy about the even strokes ment can you play in a roll, and not just a shuffle with it

  • can you use these techniques for church songs or in church?

  • i can't hear you that good

  • whats wrong with toe-toe? like When you lift your knee tilt your ankle so your hitting the pedal with your toes. then when your knee comes back down, use the ball of your foot. It takes the least energy and doesn't matter how big your feet are.

  • i have size 7 feet so i can manage to use my entire heel on the pedal for heel toe haha

  • Thanks for the lesson, although it looks like "heel - toe" ought to be called "ball of foot - toe" unless you have an Axis or other long board pedal. OTOH, I guess you can't get the rocking of the ball-toe started without getting your heel in the air.

  • Guys, I'm trying to keep a basic Hi-Hat rhythm while doing the heel-toe method, but my Hi-Hat rhythm keeps doubling up and synching with the bass drum. I've only been playing for about 6 months though. Just wondering if anyone has any excersises/advice to help me improve on this bass drum style? Thanks.

  • DAMN the content of this video is great but the quality is unwatchable

  • i so much less alone, someone else using the slide : D

  • @mizuti5 lol i thought the same! i use slide too :)

  • heel toe all the way, look at what jojo mayer is doing with it, and one thing about the slide- any way you want your going to be able to do double strokes, but then move up to threes, fours or fives its where heel toe shines. cheers

  • i think u should do a lesson on something important.......like streching

  • well slide takes alot more energy then heel toe so there for heel toe wins

  • Audio...............

  • both good technique, but i prefer to play with sliding bass drum tecnique

  • Good times bad times anyone?

  • hahaha, at 0:45, Dave says "high drummer chef" and i keep on saying it would be dangerous to have a drummer chef because imagine him holding a couple knifes just banging on everything, and all of a sudden, someone comes up...

  • @xDrumsx4xLifex WOW HAHAHAHAHA thats so funny...did you think of that all by your self...did ya did ya did ya...you comic genious you...

  • great post..

  • thanks for the post. the heel toe demo was greatly appreciated!

  • those "i cant hear a thing" comments are bull shit. this helped my life out!

  • Blablabla ... stop talking start showing. Everywhere just tutorials for beginners or stupid talking on Youtube. Plz i want to see the difference of the two techniques as played by a Master, not by a learning student....

  • the AUDIO IS BAB

  • I don't like dave.

    He looks like Jonah Hill

    but Jared is brilliant

  • there so so so needs to be more lengthy drum discussion stuff available. podcasts, or videos or whatever. nobody talks about drums. you either get short little lessons, or really bad quasi-reviews where not a single word is spoken about any of the equipment.

  • ya the red bass drum is really loose and needs to be tightened it jsut sounds dead! thats just a pet peve lol

  • hey, jus wanted to let you know, Chris Adler of Lamb Of God uses the heel-toe technique really well, using the actual heel, in a flicking motion, he has some vids demonstrating it on youtube. Altho he does use longer pedals for the easier heel hit, he used to use Axis Longboards, which i think he used to master the technique, but now he uses Trick Pro 1-V pedals. Cheers for all the helpful vids, peace out.

  • I originally learnt slide but after doing heel-toe I think that it's better than slide. Even though it's more difficult to learn, it doesn't require as much energy since you're only moving your leg once for both strokes, whereas in slide you have to do each stroke. And I think the beat that Jared done at 16:50 is much easier in heel-toe since you don't get as tired.

    Anyway just my $0.02 lol

  • although not good in audio, good in demonstration good job ^^

  • I can't friggin hear a thing..

  • Audio will continue to be improved as we do more and more videos...stay tuned, and thanks for your patience.

  • I think heel toe is far more practical in the fact that your foot really stays in place for the most part. You really only need to move you leg and ankle. But thats just me.

  • que mierda... pura mierda... cruda y olorosa mierda.

  • I'm italian but i think i have understand the meanigng!

  • great guys. Can you do the video push pull vs gravity blast?

  • Great idea, but unfortunately the quality of this video makes it unwatchble, shame,

  • We are continuing to work on improving video quality and audio quality...Stay tuned as the lessons will only get better from here. Thanks.

  • Great videos dudes!

  • only problem i have with this is i can see the beaters hitting the bass drum, but i can't hear a single stroke...like...when you guys are jammin

other then that this is a great idea!!

  • Yeah, I agree.

It seems like the mic's they're using aren't quite full range. It's hard to hear anything below about 150-200mhz.

  • We are working to improve both the audio and video quality...Stay tuned for better videos..thanks.

  • @iamamaggot666

put headphones in damn it !

  • how can this be almost 34 mins long

  • partners can make videos as long as they want.

  • heel is more powerfull but true it's more tiring :F

  • Very bad quality and low sound :(

    But great effort :)

  • We are continuing to work at getting all the technical concepts worked out. It will only get better from here :)

  • that left kick drum is dead... tighten them heads..

  • Monkey?

  • i thought the guy on the right was brann dailor from Mastodon at first...

  • do you have a macbook?

  • haha. i used to wear socks till i noticed i always got holes in themmmm

Grr, barefoot or shoes for me

  • needs to be louder next time

  • Heel toe, slide is easier but for some reason (to me) is more tired

  • Thanks so much. It was awesome.

  • thank for the free lessons... you really rock!

  • Heel-toe ftw

  • Slide

  • i preffer slide

    easier

i cant make the heel toe with necessary power

  • Slide is easier for me. Great tutorial guys!

  • sup brahs

  • That you dont know yet, you havent watched it fully :P

  • Unless I watched it live. xD
