guys i got a question i would really appriciate it if you answered it. one of my favorite drummers is dave grohl and im trying to figure out what technique he ues for his bass drum . if you got to ( bassically type dave grohl dw drums and youl see it. can someone explain what technique hes using PLEASE lol i dont know if its heel toe or what???? he said that he pounces at the pedal with the ball of his foot and sits down low to get more power???
when he breaks it down he's doing toe-toe but when he's playing it looks like heel-toe. it's less of an actual "drop and pick-up your foot to get the next beat" but the middle of your foot get's the first beat and you FOLLOW THROUGH by almost rolling up to your to toe to get the second beat. I would watch the whole video if I had the time but I don't feel free to let me know if that is explained anywhere else in the video.
I got some problems with my bass drum. I've tried both techniques but when i do double-strokes it kind of bounces so it only hit once on the bass drum or twice but the second one is very sloppy. Don't know really how to describe it well but does anyone but maybe someone recognize the problem? I've tried changing the tension on the pedal a bit but haven't really seen any difference. It's like it bouncing on the bass drum head!! waah
@Villiaam Sounds like you are trying to bury the beater on the second hit, but it is bouncing? Not sure without seeing it or a better description, so my first advice is to slow down until you have clean even strokes. I also might suggest just focusing on one technique for awhile and then switching. I am a ski instructor not a drum instructor, but from what I have learned, both involve trained muscle memory and trying to learn too many techniques in a close period of time can be confusing.
@RocknRollmartian13 Ye but the weird thing is that it sounds good on another set, no sloppy second hit there. So thats why i think it has to do with the pedal-settings or bass drumhead tension to do!, its hard to explain the problem :(
Yeah ive always been doing the sliding technique so i have decided to keep on doing that one.
whats wrong with toe-toe? like When you lift your knee tilt your ankle so your hitting the pedal with your toes. then when your knee comes back down, use the ball of your foot. It takes the least energy and doesn't matter how big your feet are.
Thanks for the lesson, although it looks like "heel - toe" ought to be called "ball of foot - toe" unless you have an Axis or other long board pedal. OTOH, I guess you can't get the rocking of the ball-toe started without getting your heel in the air.
Guys, I'm trying to keep a basic Hi-Hat rhythm while doing the heel-toe method, but my Hi-Hat rhythm keeps doubling up and synching with the bass drum. I've only been playing for about 6 months though. Just wondering if anyone has any excersises/advice to help me improve on this bass drum style? Thanks.
heel toe all the way, look at what jojo mayer is doing with it, and one thing about the slide- any way you want your going to be able to do double strokes, but then move up to threes, fours or fives its where heel toe shines. cheers
hahaha, at 0:45, Dave says "high drummer chef" and i keep on saying it would be dangerous to have a drummer chef because imagine him holding a couple knifes just banging on everything, and all of a sudden, someone comes up...
Blablabla ... stop talking start showing. Everywhere just tutorials for beginners or stupid talking on Youtube. Plz i want to see the difference of the two techniques as played by a Master, not by a learning student....
there so so so needs to be more lengthy drum discussion stuff available. podcasts, or videos or whatever. nobody talks about drums. you either get short little lessons, or really bad quasi-reviews where not a single word is spoken about any of the equipment.
hey, jus wanted to let you know, Chris Adler of Lamb Of God uses the heel-toe technique really well, using the actual heel, in a flicking motion, he has some vids demonstrating it on youtube. Altho he does use longer pedals for the easier heel hit, he used to use Axis Longboards, which i think he used to master the technique, but now he uses Trick Pro 1-V pedals. Cheers for all the helpful vids, peace out.
I originally learnt slide but after doing heel-toe I think that it's better than slide. Even though it's more difficult to learn, it doesn't require as much energy since you're only moving your leg once for both strokes, whereas in slide you have to do each stroke. And I think the beat that Jared done at 16:50 is much easier in heel-toe since you don't get as tired.
I think heel toe is far more practical in the fact that your foot really stays in place for the most part. You really only need to move you leg and ankle. But thats just me.
