haha, I'm an American and totally agree that we should be using the metric system. Sure, it would be a complete nightmare to do a total conversion with all instances where the imperial system is used. I suppose it's like trying to change something major about Japan. The imperial system is so ingrained in to everything that the US does that many here don't want to go through the trouble in relating distances/sizes to a new system.
The US system is so idiotic and illogical. It makes many things very hard for them and the rest of us. I would go crazy if I had to move to there and learn that shit.
Actually I'm 5'8" 140lbs. and I'm used to being kind of on the shorter side in the States but feel kind of tall here. lol. and I wear a large clothing size here vs. small to medium in the states.
In the 1960's and into the 70's the US did try to convert to metric but it never caught on. Since then there has been no interest in changing to metric. It would cost way to much money today to change everything over to metric. Everything in the US is standard from road signs to pencils.
why not just go with a length-by-width kind of measurement?
and even worse: the size of a shoe for one company is often a different size for another one
in germany, I have shoe-size between 40 and 42 - which is pretty small, I know :/ - but it's really awful to see one shoe fitting perfectly at size 40, while another one is too small at size 40...
Never been to Japan, but I am 192cm (6'4"). With regard to trains, similar thing in HK; I bashed my head on the handrails in the MTR more times than I could count... :(
I live in America currently and I'm 5' 8" approx. I am Chinese and look like it too. If I were to go to Japan, would some expectations change? What I mean by this is that if I were to go there and made a small mistake, would I be inferred as a Japanese person and should know what I did wrong or a foreigner and have possibly a little idea of what I did wrong?
@KELLERMANisBACK And since I'm adding to this I might as well add this; I'm 160 lbs (American Measurement Hassle...) and have a size 10 foot. Kind of on the heavier build side but I have been slowly building muscle and losing fat.
You're just saying that because you grew up with it. America's too high and mighty to give up what they use, what no one else does, and switch to make everyone's life a little easier. It stinks because when students or politicians are using numbers from around the world, we or they, have to convert it.
@goirkens The government has been trying for years, but the general public hasn't accepted the change. To be honest though, the govt. hasn't been trying very hard, they probably have more imminent issues at the moment. :/

I guess you could always order clothes online from specialist stores.
Can you carry around your own slippers or do you have to use the ones provided? I'm assuming they'll find this rude but surely they're not *all* stubborn enough to not make allowances for people with "exceptionally" large feet (I've tried, but my size 12UK/13US feet just can't fit in size 8 shoes haha).
I wish we would switch to metric too. Taking a lot science classes in college, we have to learn both which means we have to worry about converting all the time. It would be so much easier for everyone if we all used the same system of measurements.
I wish my country would switch to Metric too. I have always wondered why America sticks to the imperial system when the rest of the world is using metric. It would be so much better and streamlined in business communications, etc.

I'm 196 cm and pretty slim (80 kg). Maybe I won't go to Japan for a longer period of time any time soon because of several similar problems including this one. Especially getting gloves, hats and pants are hard to get in my awkward sizes. (If it's hard to get here, maybe they don't even know of it in Japan :p).
I'll stick around for now. If I do go I may order my clothes online. I don't buy new stuff that often so I can probably afford to do so.
yeah i know y you need to wear slippers everywhere in japan, its just that having to take off your shoes and put slippers on in a restaurant seems so strange to me, if its in somebodies house i understand but the concept of doing it in a place of business is alien to me.thx for taking the time to reply to my comment buddy.
@mrfurball Well, it's like in a Hospital or a house. One more, very important thing to watch for when you're tall, are sprinklers! These contraptions don't really stand out, as their aluminium surface reflects the colour around it so when you're not paying attention your attention isn't driven to it, and they are dang sharp!! I hit a couple of them myself when I was in Japan, this is one hazard I'm never to forget again! >:(
There are great fashion stores for heavier/taller women, one I found is Covelly's in Ikebukuro. Also, the store Honey's also has great clothes for taller girls, as they have slightly bigger sizes than in Shibuya 109 for example, and a lot of flattering cuts and fabrics :)
somebody get rid of whatever that stupid american measuring system is. .... its not based on anything. fahrenheit is some made up BS, the Celcius system is based on the properties of water... you know the most common fkin substance on earth!? lol

Ha! Ha! I can't help it, this video made me think of that classic 80's song by Alphaville "Big In Japan". Great 80's sound to the song & great memories of the time.
On a more appropriate note, I found a similar issue when I spent some time in Hong Kong. Most clothes I purchased were in the XXL size range. I am about 6'1" & 185 lbs. So I am not really that big by North American standards.
hi my name is marissa ward...im wondering what about females?....see the problem is i'm 5'10 about 170lbs and by shoe size is 11...so would i have terrible difficulty in finding female clothes or would i have 2 order it online...and what about bras...i'm almost a d so would i be able to find something?....if u don kno could u please ask ur wife?.....i mean im fine with the staring cause im probably not gonna pay 2 much attention cause i have my nose burried in a book most of the time...lol
@deathkid411 -lol in the 70's this had happen with president ford, it was a MAJOR and EPIC fail. i agree with you there, gas sounds cheaper at 50 cents a liter :D
I was wondering if you are in restaurant or guest in someones house, and the toilet slippers does not fit you, do you go with house slippers or bare feet?
and when you go to someones house is it normal to bring your own slippers or is it better to be without any slippers? What is the best action plan for "slippers are too small" situation?
When I went to Vietnam with some friends, these Japanese tourists in Ho Chit Minh city started to get photos with me. Everyone was laughing and having a good time posing as if I was a giant.
@kimberlina31981 What makes you think girls have small boobs in Japan? As a matter of fact, having had two girlfriends in Japan, and had conversations and gone clothes shopping with others, I can assure you that they certainly do not. Many Asian countries do in fact have small boob averages (10A/B or 12 A/B) like you mentioned. But In Japan, the average is, in my experience about 8B to 10C. My current girlfriend is an 8DD. Japanese girls have surprisingly big boobs compared to most Asians.
I am 178cm and a size 9 - depends how far over 70kg you are. Up to say 75kg you will be able to still get some stuff in some stores like Uniqlo. It doesn't fit perfectly (too short in arms and not quite long enough) but it does the job and doesn't look awful. Jeans are fine for some reason! Shoes, well, that's another story - I am a 9 and it was near impossible except online. Online it only went up to 9 max that I found.
i did a lesson for this for my students...for UK the sizes are 1 up...eg. size S is a M for clothes - this more or less works the same for women clothes...i think for usa it jump up 2 sizes...im a size UK7 for shoes and i have no probs...my friend though is a 3L here and struggles, either he has to go to the big city or have it shipped...you can also order online, such as from amazon, and pay at a convenient store
thanks for the video, it's really helpful, especially for people [like me] planning on visiting or studying abroad. Makes me feel a bit self conscious now. lol.
Nah, but now, I really need to buy a lot of everything >.<
I had no problems and I'm pretty big guy( weight wise), they are very accomidating especially in bigger cities. I wasn't around a lot of older buildings though in Shinjuku and Kyoto...
Slippers DO NOT FIT... lol....I wear size 11...that was intersting, but per what our friend says you just roll with it and be polite, and you'll be fine. You sort of just shuffle, like he said, hahah. So true. But just fine. Japanese people dont stare or are mean to bigger people either, very nice.
Lol I agree about America converting to the metric system. It's just so much simpler than the stupid system we have here now. I wish there were more people that would want to convert to metric here in the states.
I'm 5'10" 300lbs most doors are no problem the train i take up 2 seats so i will stand when the train is full. I'm in a western hotel the bed is the right size but is very hard. cloths are no where to find in my size. I fallowed every do and don't on TJC.C and found it very easy to get around. I've seen Big Japanese men and women and they stand out like i do
@B1rdbrain yeah... I'm about the same and I had no issues, People were very nice though no one really pointed it out except one older japanese man, who reminded me of the old guys from anmie... lol...was in interesting fellow. I think most younger people are more worldly and aren't really phased as much by this stuff.
i'm glad that my sizes at least in america are all average, the only downside about that is the sales on clothes tend to be on the sizes on the extreme edges of the spectrum
Just got back home to the states from a friends house in Yokkaichi. I'm 6'5" and was constantly hitting my head on doorways and on the handle bars/rings in trains. I never did find a pair of slippers that fit a US size 13-14.
@Prezsama Yo i was at Harijuku yesterday. the shops are kinda like Rodeo Dr. in Beverly Hills but the train station is Old and cool looking. first time I've seen hills in tokyo this trip too.
@Prezsama I am sure there are enough vids of it on youtube tough. I also asked him to do video's on akihabara once, because I am a huge anime/cosplay/idol-band/game otaku. He said that he wouldn't do that because youtube was already full of them, and he was right, so there's probably enough of Shibuya and Harajuku as well ;-) I wanted a video of one of those cute maid cafe's, I found about 100 or so XD
@EvilDemon10 i dont really dont have a fav theres too many the one you said is a kawaii one XD i love aya hirano XD XD XD mauhahahahaa XD im into harem animes XD XD
@Prezsama I have watched shitloads of anime but only 3 (or 4) highscool comedy: k-on!! season 1 and 2, lucky star (fav anime ever), haruhi, cosplay complex. XD (And does the world god only knows also count as this? :O)
Do you have any tips for funny überkawaii always happy energetic random highscool comedies in the style of lucky star? :D ;-) Pretty please? :D
@EvilDemon10 oh ya definelty but i have my limits or when ever i have time XD have you seen the haruhi movie or the haruhi chan ova thing hehehee thats cute and random XD
Why would people worry if they have their size clothes? Don't sumo wrestlers wear "regular" clothes when they're not wrestling? just shop at the same place as them.
It is interesting that you mention the USA should switch to metric. I wish we would too because my major in college basically discourages using the English system. It is all in metric.
I'm 6'6", 320 pounds, and wear a size 14 shoe. Things could get troublesome for me lol.

Egizas 1 year ago
how tall are normal girls? Would a 5'6" girl be tall or extremely tall?

I wish we would switch to Metric, too. Seriously, science uses all metric measurements. Let's get with the program.

@JephaHoward
Online it only went up to 9 max that I found.
kimberlina31981 1 year ago
i did a lesson for this for my students...for UK the sizes are 1 up...eg. size S is a M for clothes - this more or less works the same for women clothes...i think for usa it jump up 2 sizes...im a size UK7 for shoes and i have no probs...my friend though is a 3L here and struggles, either he has to go to the big city or have it shipped...you can also order online, such as from amazon, and pay at a convenient store

Could you do a video on ordering tickets to a puroresu event or people's opinion on the art of puroresu in Japan? Much thanks.

thanks for the video, it's really helpful, especially for people [like me] planning on visiting or studying abroad. Makes me feel a bit self conscious now. lol.

That would be great if we could switch to the metric system

Lol I agree about America converting to the metric system. It's just so much simpler than the stupid system we have here now. I wish there were more people that would want to convert to metric here in the states.

Why would people worry if they have their size clothes? Don't sumo wrestlers wear "regular" clothes when they're not wrestling? just shop at the same place as them.
