I owned a e36 M3 for just over 2 years, had a lot of close call races but was never beaten. I've now got a e39 M5, owned it for 3 months, not really raced anything decent yet, smashed a new audi S3 but thats it. I keep wondering which car is quicker, to 100mph id say there would be nothing in it, but im quite adament after a ton my M5 has the legs (plus it isn't restricted to 155mph) took my mate out in it last week, he owned a e36 M3 for a while, and he reckoned the M5 felt quite a bit quicker!

The M5 had new MAF and one older MAF and at one side of the "V" new VANOS. At the time of this movie the M5 had slightly over 391hp at the crack after replacing the 2nd MAF the M5 had 399hp. Less than 8hp difference.

A good e36 can keep up with the e39 ///M5 but isn't faster.

Just take a look for catalogue data.

There is no any comparison to M3 e36!

This M5 is faster than M3e46, so why it is supposed to slower than previuous M3 ???

@Caseyryeback1913, I have to agree with U, although e36 m3's are notoriously incredibly fast car but not e39 m5 fast but then again not all bmw hp claims tend 2 hold true 4 all this cars, So i suspect D e36 is in very good condition N its not unheard of them making nearly 325bhp depending on condition from standard N some e39 m5's making less than D claimed 400bhp, cause a good e39 m5 is sensationally fast. Pls i'm not saying this e39 is bad in any way but that maybe that m3 is in good shape.

Been dying to find out which one is quicker iv owned an m3 evo for 2 years, absolutely love it, & i can tell you with my hand on my heart nothing on 4 wheels has beat me yet! But due to my baby getting high on miles im starting to look at either getting an e39 m5 or a lower milege e36 again. I worked on BMW's for a few years so i know how good the e39 is, it's just whether it is quicker. Some say the m5 would paste the e36, i doubt that, but im on the fence as to whether it has the edge!?

The Muffler of the M3 is a Powersprint Muffler, but the engine is complete stock. The M5 however also hasn't a stock muffler. You can see the tailpipes are bigger then stock.

The eurospec e36 M3 "Evo" had at most 320bhp (earlier models had less power). Not sure where you calculate 80 extra horsepower from. The earlier non-evo version e36 m3 had about 280-290. The m3 and m5 are very good cars and off the line would be very even due to weight differences however after 80mph the M5 would kill it. As mentioned there are clips of the e39 m5 staying level consistently with e90 m3's. The e36 M3 featured here is either tuned or the m5 has something wrong with it. Both very

Mijn M5 had daar 391pk op de bank, na vervanging van de MAFs is dat 401 geworden, 10pk voor 500 euro.... Maar de begrenzer is er inmiddels vanaf, dus je zou kunnen stellen dat het vanaf 250 verder uitlopen is voor de M5 nu en toch vind ik het voor de M3 best een prestatie, door het gewicht, vormgeving en toerental gewoon knap mee te komen en zelfs winst te pakken door het doorhalen richting 8000 in 3e versnelling!

Maar ik heb het ook niet over de topsnelheid maar over 1 ding wat het beest, het beest maakt.

Mee eens, een e39 M5 heeft een beer van een motor. Het is ook zeker niet zo dat ik de M5 niks vind, heb zelfs kort geleden op het punt gestaan de M3 te verkopen en een M5 te kopen. Helaas allebei houden is geen optie ;)

Maar over koppel vs pk's en diesel vs benzine staan hele discussie's op het internet en die gaan we hier niet voeren ;)

En met de bestuurder van de M5 zit het wel goed hoor, zoek op youtube naar: Knot954rr Dat is de eigenaar en bestuurder van de M5.

Hehe ik weet er meer vanaf dan je denkt vriend, en ik weet heel goed dat een E36 een lachtertje is voor een goed lopende M5. en ik heb het niet over die 9pk die je op dat moment misloopt. maar over de M5 in het algemeen, en dat jou M5 op dat moment niet goed loopt is jou probleem. Maar kom niet aan met oh wat is die M3 toch snel. Maar met wat is mijn M5 toch langzaam :-0 . En ja ik weet dat een E36M3 sneller is dan een E46M3.
