  • The black lead of the normal pencil always comes through after a time.

  • you are very talented. why do you have to draw in a red pencil?

  • Truly awesome!!

  • No words can ever describe your truly awesome work.

  • Thank you this was very helpful.. :)

  • Hey, I learned a lot from it! I do portraits in pastels and pencils, etc. but not in oils. Your video is a treat! Your demonstration showed how your choice of colors for blending and how you arranged them on the palette makes perfect sense. Thanks!

I am glad you like it. Greetings from Spain.

  • The best way to learn how to paint is still to practise. Vids like this really help, but you have to be doing it all the time.

  • Like playing piano.

  • I dont want to work with pre mixed colors from the tube. When I make them myself I know what is in it.

  • I do use my laptop. And it is a great help. The only difficulty I have is starting to mix the basic colors. I cannot check what I made on the screen since it is a sort of backlight.

    How do you resolve this?

  • @lustenhouwer dont you think you could have just bought some make up and saved alot of mixing of paint.

  • Instead of using photograph as study, have you ever thought of using tablet? Tablet has advantages. On it, you can magnify a picture to any desired scale. I've recently begun using tablet for my paintings. I'd be lost without it. Mine is Nook Color and I put all my JPEG pictures on it. I use tablet up against paintings.

  • I want to know her story.

  • This is no doubt a talented artist and interesting video, but to use words such as "learn" "instruction" and "tips" is misleading. This is a demonstration. You don't learn anything from it.

  • @angien21189 Don't agree with you - I feel I've learned a lot from this video in particular

  • @angien21189 I just learnt a few things from it, you must have meant YOU didn't learn anything.

  • @grahamhowell1 Why must everyone be so hostile. I did not mean this in a negative way. I find the vid very interesting & the artist talented, however, when you say instruction it insinuates commentary, steps, etc. This is a demonstration, plain & simple. That is not to say that one cannot fill in the blanks by observation & learn something from the video. I just find the title a bit misleading b/c I was looking for something more step by step but everyone learns differently.

  • @angien21189 I learned alot from it.....

  • that does not help me as a beginner to know what exactly to mix with what

  • Thank you for all your videos, and especially for this one as I'm particularly interested in portrait painting. I admire your work tremendously. I have recently hit the doldrums with my painting and this has inspired me to try again.

  • In order not to get lost. In acrylic because it does not disappear with the oil.

  • Forgive my ignorance, but why under-paint in acrylic?? Please advise…thanks,

  • Linseed oil is OK but not in the beginning. Fat over lean!

Start with a mixture of turpentine and linseed oil.

  • I tell you, my first thought when I saw the thumbnail of the video was...Nelson Shanks. Good job...

  • Enjoy painting! All the best.

  • This is incredible. I'm inspired to paint again!

  • Thank you to make us learn that much ! sincerely !

  • You take my breath away. I love watching your work take form.

  • really good video...will take a look at your site.

  • you are so great and your works are very impressive..!more power and thatnks for this very educational video.,Pls give me the name of the Colors you used thats why i know how to tell the arts supplier if i am going to by..pls.

    God bless..

  • That is a cool song huh! Good how to as well.

What is the name of that song?

  • it would be helpful if you wrote down the colors you used for each tone. Is the first raw sienna and burnt sienna? and then white? really this thing goes fast.

  • great song!

  • o.o holy shit!

  • I use this underpainting in order to not get lost. If in trouble, I rub away the oil paint and see where I am. Secondly the acrylic paint is a sort of fixative for the drawing in color pencil. I prefer the raw sienna because that´s a color that not disturbs any next oil color.

Burnt Sienna and some purple tones also are useful.

  • awesome vid. what is the purpose of under painting? I've seen other people do it but none of them ever explained it. Does it matter what color you use to under paint?

  • @soundofmetal Purpose: to start mapping out lights and darks. Good to see if you got things right before you start messing with color. Color: Not important, but since it can somewhat tint the colors above, color can be of some importance. Some people prefer a cooler tint beneath to depict cooler flesh tones.

  • Absolutely right!!

Next time flesh tones for all the colors of skin.

  • I wonder why it's called "flesh" colour? I mean, people of brown or black skin colour don't have that "flesh" colour!

  • So you did the underpainting in acrylics and then the colors in oils? Did you put down a layer of linseed oil on top of the acrylics? I did this recently, and my oil paint cracked. I guess my linseed oil was too thick. What is the right way to prep for the oil paint on top of acrylic? Thank you for your informative video and I hope you can reply.

  • @JackANDJude

The answer is : Fat over Lean. If I rub my canvas to start then only with medium that is no fat.

Or even with turpentine. Never linseed.

    Good luck!!

  • @lustenhouwer If not linseed oil, then what? I dont know of anything else.

  • Lovely. Very good work.

  • you shouuld have shown you adding the tones.

  • @kingbowserxl

Thanks. That will be another video.

  • EPIC pro. good choice of music.
