I like your videos, but I am a beginner. Is there anyway that you could slow down and explain what you are doing? Thanks. Also I was wondering if you had a video explaining how to work from a ball of thread? Thanks again.
@Lynnski4 Please check out my other video called 'Needle Tatting Flower pendant' as it is slower with spoken instruction and no, I do not currently have a video of working off the ball. I might get on made in the future, but it is a technique that I rarely find a use for.
You are an inspiration. I am a shuttle tatter but mow that I have seen your work I ordered a needle tatting book and needles.
Please consider doing a voice over on this to provide detailed explanation. But maybe omce my book comes I will learn all about the closing of rings etc.
@gypsy2814 The thread thickness should match the thickness of the needle you use. For size 10 crochet cotton, which is what I used, use a size 5 needle. For thicker thread or yarn there are larger needles, you will just have to match them to your thread as I have no idea what 'thick thread' you are using.
If this is an instructional video why are you going so fast? No verbal instruction as to what you are doing? How is someone who has never tatted supposed to learn?
Hi, I'm looking for how to do tatting that goes around a baby blanket. I have some baby items that are very old, that have it. I would love to learn how to do for my grand babies. I have looked on you tube, but none of these clips are what I'm looking for.
The tatting is small, about 1/4 inch or smaller and it's kind of square. Can any one help me find a demo on how to learn to do this?
thank you so much for the demonstration I have never seen this before and you certainly are a master of the craft , I must have looked as though I was catching flies with my mouth open in awe !! thanks again
Hello, Mel. I'm a shuttle tatter who's looking to try tatting with fine wire - much easier with a needle - and I have a couple of questions. First, are your rings all SCMR so that you can tat off the ball? And second, when you end a chain, I see you make an extra half-stitch (?) or slip knot (?) after you slide your sts off the needle. Is this the second half of the last ds or do you knot the core thread to anchor the chain? Thanks so much in advance.
Hi, usually I do work off the ball making SCMR...I do occasionally work true rings, but I dislike working with long cut threads. When I end a chain I turn and tie a simple knot which does anchor the core to the working thread. Good luck!
Sorry but iI am just a beginner, and your video is tooooooo fast for me to follow. also if you could show how to thread the needle in slow motion would help me.
I tried my hand at needle tatting (had to use a tapestry needle), and I have to say - for me, it was much easier than with a shuttle. I get so frustrated with my shuttles - I know so little about tatting! What I've never understood is - how do you add more thread to your shuttle (or needle) if you run out in the middle of a stitch? Even if not in a stitch - how do you add more thread? TotusMel: I've seen your work around cyberspace - it's too awesome! How long you been tatting?
Thanks, I've been tatting about 5 years now I guess. To answer your other question, I can only say for certain for needle tatting, but you can only add thread at the end of a ring. You tie off, I use a square knot, cut & hide the ends. Then you simply thread your needle with more thread and bring the needle through the last knot and begin tatting again...I hope that makes sense.
The demonstration was good, but unfortunately it was very fast for me to get about it. Could u slow it down a bit so that, i could get a note of it as to how to go about it, especially after the ring, it is a bit difficult as to how ur pulling the loop.
Yes, I'm working off the ball. There are two ways to needle tat, you can also mimic one shuttle tatting my working from the end of a cut thread. Try the book Learn Needle tatting by Barbara Foster for a really clear explanation of both methods.
So is the thread you are working on coming from a ball of thread? I am just trying to learn ho to do this but all the instructions I have found don't explain how to work off of a ball of thread.
The thread to make the loops is from the needle end and the ball thread is for the chains. It took me a while to figure it out but once I did there was no turning back!
Do you have any idea how long I fooled around trying to make this, and how much thread I wasted? You make this look so easy. I'm finally getting the hang of this.
Oh my gosh I wanted to make your mask from instructables soo bad but I didn't have the faintest idea how to do this. So I looked it up on youtube and lo and behold! It's you!

Where can I find tatting supplies, and what kind of supplies are needed for needle tatting?
I'm a crocheter and I thought I'd try something new. lol This looks like it would be a nice hobby. :)

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I think I do understand what you mean. I'll have to try it.
Honestly, I'd never heard of needle tatting until I found you online. I only ever knew tatting to consist of using shuttles (and ball thread)
Thanks again!
MissMoodiBlue 2 years ago
@TotusMel Can you make a video of that? I mean you tying a knot in the middle and then starting again?

That is just wonderful. It is much easier than the shuttle and does not hurt my hands. Thanks for the great tutorial!!!
