  • I love this song, but sheesh remember the 90's when everything was recorded on a potato....

  • CRANES are great.

    I love them.

    dark lullabies music.

  • i love this song it sounds like tha fall of man and i cant even begin to sing it and make it sound anything like the record. genius.

  • Me and my mates used to toke to this back in the day...... this brings back memories of the best time of my life............. out of this world

  • Man I remember seeing these guys live opening for the Cure in the early 90's

  • so trippy

  • It's cool to see them perform but if you are on the fence at all please listen to a version of this song with better sound quality. It's really good.

  • sounds like lisa gerrard from 1984

  • fantastic

  • Garlands :)

  • CULTISSIMO !!!!! thanks I still have my vinyle somewhere...(it has, a long time after, some accents from "Garlands" ambiance, don't you think?)

  • @HeartnSoul99 Garlands!.. Definitely! That's exactly what I thought in the first place.

  • ahh back when MTV played music. iirc they recorded EG Shining for MTV too, and I was smitten forever.

  • CRANES

    I CANNOT EXPLAIN

    but it gives SO MUCH

    psy

  • @psycheciety , I think that DOES explain . . . well enough. I certainly feel that way too, so thanks for the nice and "more insightful than you realize" comment! : )

  • @RainbowMonkeeMittens

    it drags you down

    and lifts you up

    at the same time

    "nothing in the middle

    nothing at the end"

    maybe this citation

    makes it clearer??

    psy

  • this makes me feel old...lol

  • @stevepants Hah, tell me about it, what doesn't anymore? Guess it is our turn, time takes it's toll even on the coolest among us! : P

  • very niceeeee

  • Amazing band, I love Cranes!

  • iv been listening to this for years and there is nothing like cranes thank you to the band and avid fans who made me able to find these old friends. peace

  • like a knife into the heart...glorious!!!

  • Immotive audio. from a rarish long time fan from Ireland.

Lovely to see so much Cranes posted. Thanks a million............ Acumen

  • ...play this song very loud! god be with those standing on the other side of glory!

  • I remember the first time I seen these guys in Chicago touring with the Cures Wish album. The people I was with thought they were terrible...I myself went and bought whatever I could find of em...Great Video...

  • buenisimo...

  • played this really loud on top of a Griz when i was in Bosnia....a truse war song.

  • cranes wake up call!!

  • The Cranes was really the last band that created music that demanded my attention,

Since then it's just all been background music to me, bland and indistinguishable.

  • A little repetitive, but the vocals are unforgettable.

  • this song is the only thing that soothes my insanity.

  • the drummer looks funny in the begining

  • I´ll kiss you with my starblood!!! Thanx for posting this!!!!

  • I fired up Google Earth to see the cranes of Portsmouth.

Everything is just a few mouse-clicks away nowadays.

  • Thanks so much for this, I bought "Wings of Joy" when it came out based on a review in Cream magazine. About half way through the first side I was scared by what I was hearing, after listening to it 2 more times that night I was in love. Cranes make the most beautiful cathartic music ever! this song still gives me chills like it did in 91. They're the only band I ever loved that I still love completely in their humility, vulnerability, contemplation, and their triumphant humanity, True Beauty!

  • @imbrian75 How did I miss this comment! You really do get what they've always been for me as well, wow and thanks for the great observations! They were a good band and really great people too, but their work was a real "experience" able to touch off deeply personal chords!

  • Which dark epic movie do you think is suitable for this song?

I'm thinking a darker space opera like Warhammer or something.

  • FUCK YEAH! when I started listening to this I remember my parents getting really worried about me, hahaha.

  • Really? LOL! That's funny

  • I'm a pretty old fart, but I met Cranes in a RPM store in 1993 signing autographs. I only got there on time, and we were the only ones there. They autographed a picture and a postcard, and I only asked one question, "How do you describe your own music."

She answered, "Anything but Gothic," which I thought interesting since they were all in black. The others were agreeing with her.

Of course, I always interpreted Goth as being primarily mood, but by that time it was getting pretty silly.

  • @leroygir yeahhhhh

  • One of my favorite songs ever. Play it loud!

  • . . . Oh so very loud! Thanks for the note Lunchbox, and BTW I really love the "chunk of love" you have collected there in your favorites!

    RMM∞

  • Pure beauty

  • Great memories with this song

  • that's the song i discovered them through, and will always love it.

  • what an adorably frightening voice.

  • i love the voice! hypnotizing!

  • Genial

  • Ah the old days of playing a wrecked guitar with a screwdriver... this must have been one the best songs I have ever seen live.

  • I LOVE this song! My brother find's Allison Shaw's voice "creepy", but I just ignore him

  • heh, heh, good for you. : )

I was once told that Kate Bush sounds a lot like someone who slammed her fingers in a car door. Needless to say . . . . .

    RMM ∞

  • well, KB pre-Hounds of Love voice is a bit irritating

  • Oh but I loooove The Dreaming.

  • that's a good one

  • @faceofjesusinmysoup Your brother may rather Hope Sandoval's voice then. Not as haunting, but beautiful.

  • Is the guitarist using a magnet to create feedback?

  • holy crap i miss this music.

  • When mtv were good used to show the cranes and loop etc!

  • VK was klote optreden. Viel bijna in slaap.

  • I'm being nostalgic. A band has to evolve. The thing is, there was absolutely no atmosphere. Alison's voice was weak, I saw more of her back than of her face (which is still cute). New material is less guitar oriented, and don't get me wrong, the music is still good, but not for gigs where most fans expect more than two songs from the good old days. Mind you, this was the first time I saw them, so you can imagine how shocked I was. Oh, and Alison's dress was downright ugly!

  • brussels, 16 october 2008 VK

  • Ik was er ook bij in Brussel en inderdaad de zaal daverde op zijn grondvesten!! Ben wel de naam vergeten van het zaal(tje).

Does anybody nows if they still perform these days???

  • ahhhh Starblood was my first ever online "talker" name back in '94! No-one had a clue where the name came from of course...

I remember this song being performed when I saw them in Brussels in 1997, I can still remember the moment the guitar came in after that first line - the place literally shook!

    Cranes4ever

  • Pretty well sums up my mood this morning.

  • fantastico... geniale. I Cranes hanno un grandissimo carisma sonoro

  • wow.... remember when MTV used to actualy air MUSIC? those were the days...

  • those were the days yes.... 120 minutes - magic!

  • Unfortuntaly a bit out of sync but great to see renember it well on 120 mins thanks for posting.

  • This too, was the first song where they just grabbed me. 92 Wish tour. I've caught them 3 more times as they come through Detroit. Easily my all time favorite band . . .

  • Shit. THIS song was the first I heard from them. And it IMMEDIATLY had me. The album is one of the most original, darkest thing. On the Zurich stage they were so fucking FUNNY. You know, wearing coloured hats. Everyone expected a grim goth show. Instead they were making fun of the overthick stage fog. And kindly smiling at the audience.

  • Ok, they didn't wear "coloured hats", only one member did. Well just like street clothes, not clownish or something. It was just a surprise, visually. As a teenager we were like a group of Cranes fans, it was one aspect that glued us together. And the love for this underground, brave kind of music.

  • DeaR MONKEEMittens!! Thank you so much for posting this... as the dreaded guy on the right hand side, I had completely forgotton about this... I have NO idea where we did it, all I know is that my guitar was never the same again!!! Thanks... Mark

  • Welcome as always! Haven't got even one neg response here yet, you guys are well loved! Sure made that poor guitar scream on this (loved it). PS: Small world, was just today checking out your pages, picked up some tunes and two of my fav pieces from your Icons of Kipple installation (I always loved the curio shops too, still do!) Many Thanks...also Mark alias RMM∞

  • HURRAH! so you were the one...Happy New Year!

  • You a Cranes member?

  • YOU A CRANES MEMBER! MAN. I SO remember my brother coming in, going "Sit down, shut up and listen" and he let STARBLOOD play. When in a grim disco they played it, that "dance" I made became an unforgettable event. You know like being in a totally different reality for about four minutes. My first band was totally influenced by you guys. Would have been great to be supporting act. But we were just to bad musicians ha ha.

  • >>But we were just to bad musicians ha ha.

Sound like you would have been perfect, we were REALLY terrible musicians!! :)

  • Ah man, have you been playing in FOREVER? I just listened to Wings of joy this weekend, I showed it my girlfriend. I was pretty surprised at how much she loved that sound. She then picked another album to take it home. When yesterday I asked her if she had listened to it, she went "all the time". Really, I'm telling the truth. Pity I have no record of my first band anymore. Would have loved to just show you. What are you doing now? (let me check yer site...)

  • Sorry when I seem a bit like overdoing things but re-listening Wings of Joy was really a very intense ride. Like when a song reminds you of something that was extremly important and beloved once. You'd be surprised for sure if you knew what emotions that music is bringing back. Almost like the first sex. (or rather the first GOOD sex kh kh kh)

  • You were touring with SLOWDIVE! How could I forget about THAT band. Gee, I'm like time travelling... very cool...!

  • Heh heh! I very glad you are having a nice reminisce!!

    Me too!!

Slowdive were of course cool, and really great friends , we toured with them alot and shared buses etc. Great, fun and somewhat hazy Times... "sniff sniff"

  • I see. Maybe there's a chance of another tour? Anyhow, I'm always interested in tracking down what my favs are doing. Great I found yer site! That's the positive aspect of the net. And now I'm kinda chatting with you. Wouldn't have thought so 13 years ago. You were playing the synths, right?

  • I was really guitar... the one destroying the guitar on THIS clip... but yes I often played keyboards live, >I was rubbish tho, and in the studio they were always sequenced, and I never really go to practice till we were suddenly off on tour... really hated playing keyboards!! scary!!

  • Hi hi I actually remember that while playing Paris and Rome you missed ONE tone, you know the strings in the refrain. An, let's say, unfortunate part in which it sprang out a bit :-) that's why I even recognised and remember, but all of you were just looking at each other laughing for a sec. It was positively funny for sure!

  • I saw them perform this song at a NYC club in 1995 and almost made a tinkle in my pants. It was amazing!

  • cherry red records has reprinted their CDs :))) great !

  • Yep! (See the bulliten on the Sept. release posted on my page here). Mine are already on their way, can't wait to hear the additional tracks especially (seven on each)!!!

    RMM

  • super song

  • great song!!!!... i remember when they came to monterrey mexico in 93 to open concert of the cure.... the best concert of my life.

  • I'll kiss you with my starblood...

  • wow..a great live ferocious perfomance...one of my favorites bands...I check that the label reissues their two early releases..great news for the 90's fans!!

  • ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BANDS

  • mia apo tis agapimenes mpantes

  • Where do i buy thair music, it seems to be gone ^^

  • If you can't find them in the music stores in your area, there are various online sites which still offer both new and used CD's (though I don't know specifically which one offers the best shipping costs to Sweden). Check around, they can be had.

  • Love this band and Alison! Saw them twice supporting The Cure at Olympia 1992! Great stuff.

  • I never will forget the first time I heard this song. 1992. Palace of Auburn Hills with The Cure. First 25 seconds of this song, and I was in musical heaven. Decided then to buy every album they ever put out. And those guitars 53 seconds in? AMAZING!

  • The voice of a haunted child, and the music the Swans would make if they were undead creatures. :)

  • Timmybear, omg, that was beautifully put...

  • Yeah, what a hole in the wall, I LOVED it!! A small space so it was always "up close and personal" with the bands that played there! Still have my "a taste of Forever" tape giveway from the show, apparently a rare item now. While I'm not an obsessive kinda guy, you'd need to pry that one from my cold dead hands!

  • I was at the 9:30 Club show in '93 (aah, the original 9:30 Club), excellent.

  • Cranes, brilliant.

  • Thanks a lot !!! I'm in love with Cranes since I'm 13 & today I'm... 30] It's remember me the time when MTV was a real rock channel... instead of to to be this stupid commercial reclam for whores and pimps !!! Cranes and gothic forever !!!

  • Oh boy, tell me about it! I'm old enough to have seen the opening volley of MTV.

With their sputter and starts over the year, it was always worth SOMETHING, but now!? Pimps and whores about says it all, I couldn't define it better! I love it all too, your more than welcome! Enjoy the Shadows! ∞

  • temazo!!

  • All I know is that I loved them before and I still do. Thanks for post :)

  • if ya want unique and different, well, CRANES set the dang standard!

  • alison and jim, keep the good music coming

  • They were opening for The Cure in 1992 :-)

  • omg i love this-their shit is so hard to find!!!!

  • I saw saw Cranes open for the Cure back in oh...1989. Freakin' phenomenal. Great "fuck" music. if you can't get a leg over to this, there is something effin' wrong with ya! LOVE LOVE LOVE this band. Scrumptious!

  • the Cranes opened for the Cure back in 1992 for the Wish tour.

  • Love real goth!

  • this song reminds me of the Birthday Party... not bad at all...

  • my favorite song is "driving in the sun"

  • The Cranes - one of those bands that operated on the perimeter of the mainstream for the better part of 2 decades. Too haunting for mainstream, too intimate for stadiums. God bless them.

  • love it :)

  • it's out of sync :(

  • Awsome video I wish I could go to a gig of them !
