@soooooo89 Why would I show respect to a man crying over losing his shitty job in a factory. He should have thought of his employment position before he went getting his wife up the duff multiple times.
@GougerOfTheGroin oh thats right, i virtually fogot that everyman should have a college degree before having a kid or perhaps a top class job that provides a lucrative income, such a variety of those kinds of jobs around. lol! the man is trying to provide food and shelter for his family in an honest way, but there is no work to be found. so on the contrary you should show respect.
@soooooo89 Well im in a situation where I used to be on a stable healthy paycheck per year and now could be made redundant at the drop of a hat. So I've told my wife no, there is no way we are having kids. Shes finally broken now and spends her days ironing and crying. You won't see me with starved kiddies you see, therefore you should respect me lad. U mirin son?
Now I will stand corrected on this but was Ordinary Man not dedicated too Thatcher? The song was written by Peter Hames and not Christy. Like I say I will stand corrected on it BUT I do have a live version of Christy introducing it saying "You can say what you like about Maggie Thatcher but there was some great songs written about her!" I agree it rings very true in today's climate BUT to many of you seem to think it was written about Irish economic climate years ago.
@DubInOttawa he introduces the song by saying there was great music written in thatchers time . what he ment was that people write the best music going through the hardest times!
love this tune its a song for the normal man of this fucked up system of capitilsm we build this country and we get shit on by the powers that be fuck fina fail

@deano50z Just before you were born, Margaret Thatcher ruled the UK, and her policy was to shut down the miners in England and lots of other industry, and replace the working England with a new business orientated England. She also became an enemy to N.Ireland, declaring Bobby Sands a terrorist prisoner. There was only one good thing about Thatchers reign, some great songs were written about her.
The lyrics have come back to haunt us.. Cowen, Lennighan and the bankers 'still drive a car, smoke a big cigar and still take the family on a crusie' ...' a generation cast aside' .... Who's the fool here..poor Paddy again !
if ever the american people disagree with thier laws they can exercise their constituaniol right to amend it or their human right to revolt against it and establish a new government
you thick paddy cunt, you're ranting and raving about how cowan and co. fucked up ireland while it was fuckers like you that voted them into power. ergo you got what you deserved. so stop blaming FF for your idiocy and educate your monkey ass into getting a job.
Twenty five years after Christy first sung this song about our economic crisis of the 1980's, it sounds more true than ever. Our children coming out of college to mass unemployment, as the song says, a generation cast aside by Bertie's Fianna Fáil and their banker and developer friends. They must not be allowed get away with it this time. And as for the ECB, "they have stripped us bare of our dignity and pride".
Aisus2009...We shouldn't pay much heed to organised religions, God and God only will decide where our souls go.
I take offense at organised religions condemming suicide victims to hell, who the fuck do THEY think they are, God himself? my thinking is that God in his infinite mercy will judge everyone in the end, and fuck those who's religions condemm, they no nothing about it...
why post this here, this song is nothing to do with religion or suicide. and Christy is no fan of the Church. i personally can only agree with assisted suicide. if you are fit and healthy, takin your own life is wrong

Dude, i almost agree, im not religous ( im athiest ) but in most religions killing yourself is condemning your soul to hell as far as i beleive.
The only thing they can do, is, F**k themselves royaly, or get a spaceship with limited oxygen supply, and fly to the next galaxy ( they would be dead before they left our solar system )
the last time i really listned to this song my dad and mother where lat go from there lifes work,
i see the dole queues getting larger by the day. are we going back to the bad oul days? can we really let this government do that so our children as i had seen my parents got stripped of there pride.
As I entered the FÁS office this morning this song came to my mind immediately. It was so sad seeing all those strong men waiting for some opportunities... :(
NOW THAT WE ARE FACED - WITH THIS HUMAN WASTE. Thank god for unions (mine in particular Maritime Union of Australia) for giving workers the voice too fight for a FAIR share of the corporate dollar generated by there hard effort. This does not mean the company cant make good profits just dont shaft the workers for being in a Union or when things are not AS profitable.
Realspark Wake up Thatcher was anti union and detroyed an industry that had brought needed employment too hundreds of workers because of her polical ideoligy. History does/ should rightly condem her as the sour faced dictator she was. Dont fuck with free marked bullshit (over employment) or with my Irish friends.
I honestly beleive that Thatcher should have stood trial for crimes against humanity, she willfully destroyed peoples lives in the 1980s. She's responsible for many deaths including the deaths of the hunger strikers in Ireland.
thatcher was a evil bitch.she made ppl die because of her ignorance!!!she let 10 ppl die in the h blocks because they WERE political prisoniers!they dident let the loyalists die lyk tat.she put the u.k and Ireland, north and south through hell.
and an other point, the ONLY person who could shut her up was the Taoiseach at the time, Charlie Haughey!an IRISH MAN!!!!!
It's true it's a poignant song now that we're in a recession, it's a great song regardless and what we're goin through is nothing compared to what it was in the 80's in Ireland.. try paying your mortgage when interest hits 18% and welfare payments are cut..
Okay, the song had minimal instrumental side, as it was hoping for me to cry and yell how awesome the lyrics are. Well, to me it was just lame angst. xD

Hey Paul, I pray you have respect for other peoples' opinions. I'm only commenting on a song. I am aware it not the fault of the Worker that the factory is closing, but the He never says why it is closing. Businesses which lose money cannot stay in operation. Perhaps if the Worker had advanced in the company, he might be in a better position to get a better job. You don't have to be insulting about it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Read the lyrics and pay attention to what the narrator is saying. He blames the factory and the economy, but what did he do to better himself? Instead of taking classes in something after work, he probably went to the pub. How come he never advanced in the factory? Because he had no skills, he wants to take just about any job that comes along. It's depressing and he's paying for it. But hey, let's blame M. Thatcher. It's easier.
your a fuckin gobshite, thatcher was a cunt, her own party shafted her and she is 1 of the reasons (notice i said 1) why the british are hated throughout the world, her policies and arrogance caused untold suffering to millions of people worldwide, not least in her own backyard, remember the coalminers, you ignorant prick.
Your tiny brain probably forgot that coal was not a viable and useful source of energy in England any more. At the time there were less and less customers for coal. The coal mines closed because there wasn't any more need for them. Over in the USA the same thing has occurred with steel, in that it has become cheaper to buy foreign steel, and not American. The problem was the change in the economy, not Thatcher. You, the others here, are too stupid to realize that.
