These news outlets skip the issues and go straight to debates (which can turn out to be arguments consisting of yelling and waving hands) because that's what brings in ratings. Look at C-Span and how many viewers they have compared to Fox or Cbs.

I recall during the Bush administration seeing Hannity sitting in the Oval office with Bush and the Pastor that later got in trouble for using male prostitutes (while he was railing against homosexuality) for a photo opt.
