Very nice. But personally, just hate those roundwound string squeaks. Would seriously consider at least trying flats - which are available from LaBella for the Bass VI.
Nice job, but sorry, pet peeve of mine... it's not a cover. You have a fantastic instrument... I'd love to hear that and not the recording. That bass deserves to be HEARD!
As to the speculation (ad nauseum) on here about what Simon did used, who cares? It's all about the sound. The cure have an arsenal of vintage and modern instruments that they trade off and use as needed. Videos are pretty much just for the "look." IMHO the live recordings are a lot more reliable if you really care thatmuch
I know I have already commented but I just read the description, this is a VERY good cover, dont get me wrong, its just you said it shows the versatility of the bass, dude, this song wouldnt show the versatility of any bass, its just chugging the bottom string.
I'm not really a huge fan of Fender basses in general, they bore me, they have the most standard bass sound that money gets you. I prefer heavier sounding basses and thats why I use BC Rich, but I mean you can get basses that dont sound heavy but sound better than Fenders.
how is it fake you can hear his fingers sliding scratching the strings you cant hear it so lively on the record and the bridge gives it away it is a bass

I CAN'T BELIEVE NOBODY HAS COMMENTED THAT THIS GUY IS MIMING !!! He does not play a single note, the bass you hear is the song playing in the background. He doesn't even start miming at the same time. Look at some of his other videos where he does attempt to play - they sound completely different ( i.e not exactly like the record ! ) try 'Lullaby' for a start as he can only barely bash out the simple guitar riff and doesnt even attempt the bass. WHAT A FAKE !!
How do you mean, playing by the bridge? I would wager you're right; I've never tried it, but that tone has been driving me crazy. That weird jangle is so hard to get out of a bass.
I love this instrument...I'm a bass player and I can play guitar, too. Fender VI is the perfect synthesis between my beloved instruments.
This IS a bass, it is just in the form of a guitar. Tiene la misma escala de un bajo y si ves las cuerdas, estan bien mas gruesas que las de una guitarra. It has the same scale as a bass and if you look at the strings, they are much thicker than guitar strings.
however, simon was seen using roberts fender VI on stage for 'there is no if' during the 2000 dream tour, and the 2002 trilogy movie.. (side-note: also i saw simon play acoustic guitar during 'this is a lie' during the 1996 swing tour)
im actually fairly certain that simon used a conventional 4 string bass guitar to record the fascination street bass track that appears on the disintegration album.. most likely a stingray bass.. although in the fascination street video, simon does appear playing roberts fender VI.. simon has never used the VI to play fascination street live, to my knowledge.
he likes to fool around in videos, in the just like heaven one he plays with fingers, thing that he never really does, and yes he used a stingray in disintegration, that crispy sound so to speak i can replicate exactly with my stingray, you jsut have to lower the stirng and boost the trebs ;)
ive noticed how everyone seems to be playing the really easy, simplified version of this bassline, why dont you try playing the one with the double picking and quadruplets see how that goes hahahah.
floydie: Um, hello there are basses with 4, 5, 6 and even 7 and 8 strings! This Fender though is a hybrid with four bass strings and two higher ones IIRC. heavymetalkicksass: You could also use the A string perhaps (here the E is used) BUT you need the finger sliding to get the sound properly. I do agree this is a simple bassline, though doing this for 4 minutes w/o missing a note is NOT easy. I love doing this on my J-Bass with Chorus and a lil' OD.
Both the Fender Bassman VI and the Shecter Hellcat VI are quite controversial guitars. Shecter really sum up these two beasts they are not a bass not a bartione not a standard guitar but all three rolled into one. I play mine as a guitar and a bass but other people play them just as a bass. To me it is a guitar that is one octave lower than a normal one and it is more in the low frequencies of a cello.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Nope you are TOTALLY WRONG the guitar that they use is the Shecter Hellcat VI which is simillar to the Fender but is actually a superior make as I own both guitars, I got the Fender first then discovered the Shecter which has more richer tones on it than the Fender. Try looking at the Schecter Research website or go into a shop that stocks them and ask for there catalouge and you will find the Cure in the magazine. They have been using the Hellcat VI for many years.
Oh don't worry I'm well aware of the Hellcat VI, but fascination street was recorded in the 80s when they still used fenders. The hellcat is only a few years old.
Is that one of the 2006 Custom Shop Bass VI reissues? How much did that thing cost? I know vintage ones can be around $10,000 if they are in good condition lol, so my only chance of ever owning one would be one of the CS models, lol. Nice vid.
I just got my first guitar for Christmas. I wanted and got a Fender Bronco Squire Bass. I don't know much about guitars let alone bass yet. I just liked the pickup and still learning to play.
All my friends got the Guitar Hero 3 game instead. Some day, I'll actually be able to play well!
I didn't listen to the Cure (one of Mom's favorite band so didn't seem cool) but the bass parts are great!
I just watched the musicvideo for "Fascination street" and Simon is indeed playing a Bass VI but I'm still not sure if that's the instrument he used on the actual recording, it still sounds like a Stingray to me. But then again, I could be wrong.
@WouterJ That kind of fits, he has played stingrays quite a bit in the past (see Live In Orange) but it also wouldn't be surprising if he did play the thing on a Fender VI. He doesn't anymore tho...
I don't know where you got the information from that Simon used a Bass VI on "Fascination street" because my ears are telling me (as does the booklet of the "Desintegration" CD) that he used a Musicman Stingray. This track has that typical "Click" of a stingray. I should know I own a Stingray myself. That's not to say that it couldn't be true though. And lets not forget that aside from Robert, Perry and Porl also used Bass VI's
Excellent! That's one of my all-time favorite songs. I woulda had ta hunt ya down if you'd messed it up. You've done it great justice, young Jedi. You may live.
It's a six string bass made by Fender. Robert used to play lots of concerts with it (Show, the trilogy in Berlin, etc). I cannot remember if it can be called an "ordinary bass", but it does not sound like an actual bass.
thats a bass? looks like a guitar. maybe because it has more than 4 strings. through me off. Good cover though.

Thankss.....I wonder how it'd be possible to get rid of the "noises" when you change your finger's place. Is there a way?
Thanks
Smithereens31 3 years ago
Well, there are a few ways. You can use audio filtering to block it out on a recorded clip.
But, personally, I'd just get flatwounds. A 'duller' tone, but best way to get rid of fret noise.
