  • ok

  • ubuntu is for lame, build your own debian

  • Humm, my favourite distribution is Mandriva :-) It's also a good choice for a Linux newbie.

  • Why the fuck is no one recomending Arch ?

  • @MisterJ4512 because most recommendation videos are aimed towards beginner users, while Arch is aimed the more experienced bunch.

  • Is this LXDE or what?

  • Mac OS X's kernel only uses some of BSD, with the rest being the Mach Kernel.

This means that it is not the linux kernel.

    dur

  • lol my mom is goin to by us an abunta this week im so excited,

  • Haven't they upgraded the boot time for ubuntu? Because I have ubuntu 10.10 and it boots very fast.

  • what a fucking HORRIBLE thing

you need counselling if you really like that shit

  • imho Debian is the best because it it the most stable and doesn't drastically change every 2 months like *ubuntu

  • @omfg4all I agree. I use #! Crunchbang (based on debian) on my laptop and debian on my servers. It is by far the more stable, faster solution.

  • One of the most pleasant recent distros is Zorin OS 3 (Gnome) or Zorin Lite LXDE - based on Ubuntu, works out-of-the-box, and rocks! I tried 100s of distroc, and I stick to PClinOS e17 and Zorin OS 3!

  • i use kubuntu

  • i like ubuntu better because the interface dosent seem as crowed to me.

  • Best Linux distro ever? hahaha. Maybe you never tried Arch Linux.

  • @xxSwAmPxx lol what can you do on arch that you can't do on ubuntu?

  • @Peetowan Is not about what I can do on arch, is about performance and better arrangement of distro.. and wait, I was about to forgot the PACMAN and AUR repository... Ubuntu only dreams about these.. :) hehe

  • @xxSwAmPxx what about synaptic and apt-get? I havent used arch yet but if it is better and more stable i wont hesitate to migrate to the distro. Ubuntu's support is verry hard to beat, if you get a problem on ubuntu, google it, and you shall find help. DemonSoul: I dont think i agree it is the best distro ever

  • @Peetowan apt-get is slow... synaptic is a GUI for apt-get.. AUR is something original and Pacman is the fastest package manager ever! Just install Arch Linux and you will know what I'm talking about.. or check out my last video.. In arch linux are very low chances to get a problem and anyway, you can get support immediately in Arch Linux forums... Maybe Arch is not the best distro ever, but sure is the fastest ever :)

  • @xxSwAmPxx sounds great. I will defenetly try arch out.:) and build my own opinion.

  • This looks like LUbuntu.

  • which distro is it?

  • i hate linux.

its ugly and i hate the GUI.

    use mac.

  • @macospat Silly you. You can change each and every part of a Linux desktop including making it look like a Mac, or Windows. I got a tinted glass theme at the moment that's kicking major ass. Did I mention that you can use docks too? You can get fonts and icons too. The possibilities are endless.

  • I know that!!! It's just that the programs for Linux are boring , and I hate the stupid terminal-like GUI too. Themes for linux are shit, as o have used many... Linux is for people who want a computer that slowly boots, it is incompatible with all hardware And did I mention hard to turn on! My friend has lnux and to trn iron he needs a list of intructions just to turn the thing on in this dos shit. Ok

(sry about my spelling, typng from an iPhone is hard as hell)

  • However typing on my cell phone, with a full keyboard, is really simple and easy, even if it is cheaper. See how an economically conscious consumer can make purchases based on the actual worth of products, and not how popular and trendy they are? It really is a joy to reply to youtube comments on my phone, it's so easy with this qwerty-button layout! Also, my screen doesn't get smudgy!

  • @macospat my linux laptop boots in 24 seconds (including the time to write my username and password). os x is incompatible with almost every computer (duh).

  • @sebbeks that's not true, OSX runs on a great deal of non-apple hardware. hell at one point i have it installed on a Dell d600 (old PC) and it ran fine. It runs on my desktop great, and my dell inspiron as well.

    .

it'll run on anything that has somewhat supported hardware. the biggest limitation of OSX is Video drivers, you need ATI, Nvidia or Intel. if you have one of those and decent hardware, it will usually run fine (duh)

  • @macospat You're commenting from an iPhone, that says something about tech knowledge right there. On top of that you're criticizing linux as a whole, which may as well be racism considering linux distros are completely different regardless of the linux kernel. Then you have the sack to say your friend needs a list of instructions to hit a power button? Or maybe hit spacebar if you're in hybrid-sleep which Mac/Windows support is actually taking from Linux... Get lost troll.

  • @FarFromAverageJoe Ok, its been a while, but i dont mind linux, ive got it on one of my laptops, and use it for a web server..

    :)

  • Mac OSX is a BSD build

praise your mac, and praise it well... for it is Linux

  • macospat - I hear ya on the hardware compatibility thing. As long as the big companies are getting paid by MS linux will always be behind.

sehnsuchti - You got it backwards. Linus created Linux based on Unix as an open-source alternative. Mac and Linux are entirely different bastardizations of Unix. And Steve Jobs can rot in Hell for all I care.

  • Also My Linux Mint machine boots up in 33 seconds flat and is only incompatible with my Ipod (Thanks Steve). Your friend is probably using one of those elitist Linux distros like Slackware. For newbs such as yourself, check out Linux Mint. Mint's welcome screen actually links you to the help chat room where people and help you out with any issues you might have. And did I mention that it comes on a Live CD which lets you check it out and even use the internet with all the major codecs and

  • plugins already preinstalled? You can even use it while it formats your hard drive and installs. Then you can keep using it until you decide to reboot into the installed OS. Did I also mention that you don't need to use terminal (command line) except in emergencies and there is lots of guides for doing things on google, and in the chat rooms? As for the themes, You're not stuck with what it comes with. There are literelly thousands you can download and use, and customize.

  • well, it's unix...

  • @sehnsuchti Mac OSX has code from BSD, it is not unix and not linux. the BSD kernel is run as a service, but Apple's kernel - the mach kernel has nothing to do with linux. some of user-space is built from BSD, but you have to remember a big part of OSX is Openstep, not just BSD....

it does have some similarities though. Apple uses GCC and is POSIX compliant.

  • @sehnsuchti Yep! In fact, according to Wikipedia, OS X is actually based off of FreeBSD. So, would FreeBSD be the best choice for Linux Distro?

  • If it is backed by money :). I personally think Mac OS X is the best, But it has some Drm Tech in it. But thats the programmers fault I think not Mac OS X.. From my use of Mac OS, it's way more free then windows, even their programs are more free. Windows has the most intrusive drm form my experience. To answer your question Yes, if Free Bsd formed a corporation and paid the programmers their fair share then it could be the Best Os. I'm not sure if Free Bsd is linux or not.

  • Mac OS 9 and below was not a Bsd build. Personally I prefer the old school mac better then perfected BSD build. Because mac decided it would be cool to build off the Bsd code, All my games and programs on my mac became obsolete. Thats why I gave windows a try in the first place, I had nothing to loose but lots to gain. overall , I think all mac proved is if you pay someone to do a job you get better results then if you depend on getting something for free.

  • also proves that If the Linux coders where to form an Cooperation, then they to can be just as good as Mac or windows with main stream programs ruining natively on the os. I don't think cooperation are evil. I think Drm Just suck. Thats why I am a fan of Linux..

  • @sehnsuchti It's actually Unix-like, but yeah. That's the idea! XD

  • @sehnsuchti BSD unix is not Linux nor is Mac OS X open like Linux. Mac OS X is not even BSD. Mac uses the mach kernal from BSD and puts their own desktop on top of the kernel.

  • @sehnsuchti

    No, it's BSD.

GNU/Linux and BSD aren't the same thing.

  • @sehnsuchti BSD is not Linux. Though Linux and BSD are both based on UNIX they are totally separate projects with different underlying philosophies.

  • using a mac is not very economically concious considering there is a depression going on right now. People are getting laid off and you're spending extra money on frivolous extras just because "they look pretty" and they make you think that you're cooler. It's people like you that are the reason we're in this mess in the first place.

  • @macospat sooo... just because you don't like linux the rest of us should stop using it? LOL

  • Why is best?

  • ...I agree it can be a matter of opinion, I installed Wattos (Beta 3) and the CD drive do not work at all, I know is too early to tell but it is inconvenient for me since I love listening to music.

  • the video should be an explination on WHY its the best. people don't really judge on what you have to show because the video doesn't prove a lot. just add annotations and then you'll have something worthy of consideration

  • You should try gobo linux, it has a more organized Filesystem. much better than ubuntu.

  • i dont like regular ubuntu thats why i got wattos. ubuntu takes way to long to boot and compiz fusion slows my pc down so i dont use it

  • @DemonSoul89 If you check out the new Ubuntu it loads a lot faster

  • @DemonSoul89 Nothing against WattOS, but you might check out 10.04 on an extra machine. It boots WAY faster than Windows. In less than 1 minute I can go from being powered off to browsing the web and having all background processes loaded.

  • @DemonSoul89 then you should try xubuntu!

  • you know... you can make Linux look a lot better than that, customise it a little bit more using Compiz Fusion, installing gadgets and all that stuff, just saying. I looove Ubuntu because I can make it look like a OS X, which is pretty cool, and good looking.

  • thanks for your input

ive tried over 25 distros and this is the one i have chosen to stick with :)

  • @DemonSoul89 have you tried slax?

  • @DemonSoul89 Glad you found a distro that's to your liking :D

  • Why is this "the best distro ever"?

I think that's a matter of opinion. Personally I like slack or gentoo based distros (preferably slack and gentoo :), and I find ubuntu based distros to be a real pain.

  • I personally find no deb file support to be a pain.
