I like your rationale behind why you answer differently to different people. I am Afro-European (AA, English, French,. Irish). Us, ally I tell people that I am multi-ethnic and , sometimes, also go into the mantra of listing who I come from (as I did above).
However, there have been a few instances that someone has looked at me and yelled out "You mixed, ain't you?", after naming what about it gave me away. One woman was Asian and, I responded, actually, I'm Black. I don't know why, exactly.
I believe that the "WHAT ARE YOU?" is the rudest fucking question in the world and I HATE IT!!! I'm like you and let them know straight up that its not cool to ask that question. I ask them if they are a racist and is that why they want to know what I am??? That shuts them up.
2) Sometimes (when I am quick!) I ask them the same question back about where *they* are from, and I notice that they are often very reluctant and uncomfortable, like I am crossing the line. I understand this, because what I am asking them (strangers) is private information! Then they will *hopefully* realize that their question might have been a bit inappropriate too!
1) Very recognizable! In my case its always white people that ask me where I am from. Sometimes when I am in a bad mood, I elaborate my white fathers’ lineage only. It is not really satisfying though, because in the end: who are *they* (strangers) to be told all my private family information to, anyway? It’s just really annoying.
Good vid! I've hear the "what are you" question all the time (my corkscrew curls are a give away). Another way to deal with it is to deflect by asking the person the same question. Then, after they've described themselves, change the subject ; ) But I've never really gotten a negative vibe from anyone. Usually they just say, "Wow, cool mix" and change the subject (maybe they're thinking just the opposite LOL). One never knows.
uh! i totally feel you! i hate it when people say "what are you?" the answer is simple really, i'm human, just like the next. a more appropriate way of asking would be "what is your ethnic background?" or "what's your ethnicity?".
i'm black and cherokee and it also pushes my buttons when people try to guess, there's not alot of mixed people where i am so people always treat guessing my ethnicity as a game. it's irritating after a while.
How about being the wave of the future. After all, interracial marriages are increasing, birth rates of mixed race couples are booming so the population of mixed race is slowly catching up with monoracials. So why not tell them jump in the gene pool and mix it for a change. Don't hate integrate. :) I wonder what the expression on someones face would be if someone told them that. I'd love to be the fly on the wall when someone was told that.
Good video=-) Yea i usually dont mind answering if its from another mixed person,or some girl who is hitting on me. I do,however find it offensive if its coming from someone who just wants to know so that they feel comfortable. I just state that im american, since that is where i am from
I never thought about that. I ask people sometimes because I'm nosey lol, sorry. I've had people ask me all my life. I've had some pretty interesting guesses. I never asked anyone to guess they just thought it would be a fun idea. I get different ones all the time but my favorite was when someone asked me if I was Russian, lol. (Until I saw the people that come here on work permits I thought they were teasing me lol.)
I am a American, but my color scheme goes as follows yellow, red and black.

When someone asks what I am I say Communist. You should see the look on their faces.

Good video!! LOL I agree with you on the whole concept. If I had a dollar for all the times I've got the "What are you?" question, I would be RICH!
