The distinct irony between the text and music is strikingly heart-breaking. The singer declares, "The sun, it shines on everyone!" and yet a hollow, dark counterpoint suggests that the sun is mocking with its indifference to those who suffer the death of a loved one.
I always worry that his voice won't make it up to the higher register. He manages every time, but it's just such a heavy voice. I really do like his tone, but his beautiful German is often not clear enough (happens a lot with a heavy voice).
It is really unfortunate that Diskau's recording's of baritone literature are the most well known when there are singers like Goerne who far surpass his vocal and expressive ability. Diskau's affected style of singing is a terrible model for young singers and should always be taken with a grain of salt. This is REAL singing.
What are you talking about? This is quite a good performance, but not even close Fischer-Dieskaus singing. I woul'd say Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is the best baritone (or singer) in the history of recorded music.

Good voice, but his body movements are weird and he is out of breath at the end of phrases. We can't compare him with Dieskau.

What is this obsession on here with making comparisons?
