They didn't fear to die, like the vikings 800years before. there were 11000 soliders in the division but 60000 had serwed in it and it was complete destroyed 4times. There were 52 soliders in the div who were awarded with the Ritterkreuz.
The div has 3rd most ritterkreuze, the Viking had 54 and Das reich had most, it had 74!!
However the SS soliders were soliders and they did their work better that any unit else.

in this unit 60000 men served, and it was complete destroyed 3 times. It had 15000 men in it regulary.
However, this was not th best ss division. It was known as the best becvuase of its name. There were 53 RK awarded in LSAH.
It ws on rank3, Rank one was the 3nd SS Das Reich (74 RK), second 5thss Wiking with 54 Rk.
But best division in ww2 ever was 1st Herman Göring Falschirmjäger/Paner div with incredible 129!

Until 1942 the SS organised: 4 german divisions, 2 skandinavian,1 french and 1 estonian .
In 1943 they orgainsed: 5 german divisions , 1skandinavian, 1belgian, 1italian, 2ukranian and 1 kroatian.
In 1944 they organised: 1 belgian division, 2 kroatian, 1estonian, 4ungarian, 1albanian, and 2 russian.
In 1945 they organised: 3 german divisions, 2dutch, 1 russian ans one mixed balkan.

The 1st SS Division LSAH wad the most vell trained and most loyal troops in Europe at the beginning of the war. But in 1942-1943 most of the experienced and vell trained men were dead.
The division was complete destroyed 4times. The division had 11000men. But over 60000 had served in it. So the SS Divisions had to be fill up with less experienced and shortly trained men. ca. 50precent of the SS Divisions
in 1943-1945 were with voulonteers often from Balkan and Balticum.

They killed alomst all of the Polish POW's in their deadcamps, like they dit with the Russians. They had allies with the Ukraine, Servia, Krotia, Finland, and many more as you say....
