I once sanded my Columbia U2 back in junior bowling with 60 grit. Ball not only peeled off the dry, but the oil, too. LOL Most unbelievable thing was when I shot 220 something on a bone dry condition when I was like 12 years old with it.
I talked with a bowling shop vet about this, the sanding was done mostly on the old urethane balls. They're very hard balls compared to the reactive urethane covers of today. I tried to get my old AMF Angle (1980s vintage urethane ball) resurfaced at the shop and the guy said it couldn't be done. I can use teh scotch-brite pad on it but that's about it.
Yet sanding your ball is still used today. Back then, they didn't have multiple bowling balls to compensate for other lane conditions. I have a ball at 800 grit SANDED, and works great. It doesn't tear up the lanes NEARLY as bad anymore.
@thiswilldoblue .....This is actually done way more now, just with very high grits relative to sand paper. Usually Abralon pads are used to alter the surface from 180 (which you will never see) to 4000 grit. Altering the surface to manage your breakpoint distance is one of the biggest factors in having success on a sport shot.
my high preformance ureathane bowling ball costed $99.99 guess its not for me haha lol

LOL my coach told me to sand my Urethane ball. Its a 1994 Columbia 300 Wrecking Ball. I also have a Urethane Ebonite Maxim from the 80s or 70s,

Back in the day I'd use a green scotch-brite pad if the lanes were super greasy.

Sanding the ball? No way! I don't wanna sand my ball otherwise it will ruin the ball condition.

No, not the sort of thing you would do now, but 20 odd years ago before plastic lanes and exotic bowling balls.....

When was this tip made? Pretty sure that they outlawed sanding your ball once you started bowling.
