My dog Max (Jack Russell) is crazy. Every night he gets his toys and throws them up in the air. He also takes he bed and drags it around with him. He bit me a few times in the past but I still love him. Max is very loving too. :)
Thinking about getting me one of these dogs as a "House Trained" family pet. I'm a huge dog lover (mostly owned pit bulls) and I have two young children with a lot of energy who adore dogs as well. (ages 5 & 1) I'm stuck between a JRT and a Basset Hound though..any advice?
@titoortiz get a jrt, the bh will probaly have some jiont problems by the age of 6 or up.i have a female spainle Jrt mix shes 19 years old :) i would pic a shortie over a Perason type.

My friend got bite by his and it locked on his mouth then he kicked it to free himself he isnt coming to school any more i dont know why hes gonna kill it and the police lets him

My aunt used to have one. I loved him so much. She has a injured leg that is broken in 12 places. So she had to give him away. When I heard he was going to be givin away I started to water my eyes. I MISS HIM SOOOOO MUCH.

No offence but from personal experiences i hate these dogs. My aunt and uncle have on thats like 17 years old or something, the only thing that comes to mind when i see it is anger. You can't even touch it, it just growls and bites all day.. :(
@Sniffysmyboy Mine sleeps all the time (even though he's 3 months), but oh boy, when he gets crazy, you have to keep it with a leash in order to control him
@Daivis2006 Haha sometimes our dog goes crazy but that's always for about 10 minutes at dusk (dog hunting hour). He'll just chew a bottle and run outside and try to get us to follow/chase him lol

At some point I really want to get a dog as a hiking companion, and I do like small dogs. Sounds like the jack russel is a good choice... Especially since they are so agile, energetic, and good with temperature change.

@mindphlux24 Well .. those are the MAIN promblems of a JRT if they don't get enough exercise or not properly trained like your little sister's dog... they can get DESTRUCTIVE. JRT's are super smart dogs and if the owner doesn't teach the DOG that HE/ SHE is the pack leader..there going to think that they ARE in charge.. that's basic dog training 101...

JRTs are super smart dogs and if they get bored.. they can get destructive and go bonkers... barking all the time etc. It seems like your sister didn't do her research with this breed... JRTs are great dogs with the proper training and the right owner :)

I've got a Jack/Patterdale mix. Omg, what a bundle of energy lol if the energy of JRT's could be somehow converted the world wouldn't have any energy problems :-). They are amazingly smart and will try everything to outwit you. I taught mine to 'bring slipper' and every time she did she got a treat. Worked really well until three days later. When she on request picked up the slipper and walked off with it looking at me as if to say: 'Bring me the treat, then you can have your slipper ;-)'

Hes wonderful. Hes 16 going on 17 now and is very healthy. Hes very affectionate and still has allot of energy. Though he is beginning to go blind and losing some of his hearing (lol hes 16 after all) I luffles him.
I have a jack russell and hes so hyper sometimes but he also can be pretty quiet, he likes to sleep under the blankets all the time at night with me, hes adorable :)
i have 2, one smooth coat and one rough. they are freakn crazy but the greatest dogs ever, wouldn't trade them for the world, they are very entertaining also.
@ZoRoFanGirlYuKi lol, mine also has some weird colloring. He's completely black, his paws are white, his face is black with a little white beard and two brown dots on each cheek, and he has a big white spot on his back. But damn i love him!

I had a Parson Russel puppy for three days, but my mum turned out to be allergic zo we had to bring it back. It was the cutest puppy ever! I would sit on the couch and it would come over and put its paw on my knee begging me to pick him up. They're cute, alert loveable and smart if you train them. I miss him sooo much!
this reminds me of the time my own Jack russel had pups, I aways went lying down in the door opening so they wouldnt come through, but the little thieves grouped me up lol! overwhelming me 300 style. funny part is they only wanted to do what they werent allowed to do, get over me into the hallway! when a pup was over me they just turned around to climb over me again..and again and agaaaain.
@Shew8619 they are one of the smartest breeds. my jack russell learned lie down, sit and stay at just six weeks old. when we went around an agility course she got it straight away. they dont bite ankle, well only when there puppies but if you keep them busy then they won't. you clearley havent owned a jack russell becasue they can be the most cuddest friendlest dogs ever mines great with young children and my cat and shes great for keeping my bed worm in winter, so don't be a hypracrite.
I have a Jack Chi (Jack Russell Chihuahua). She is completely psychotic. She's the most loyal dog I've ever encountered (coming from her chihuahua roots) but also the most energetic and vocal (not just barking, she makes a HUGE variety of sounds). She's tall and has the short coarse hair but has the big pointy ears of a chihuahua. I was going through a huge slump of depression and my mom got her for me. She saved my life. She's brought out so much joy in me that I never even knew I had. :)
I love DOGS 101 my mum keeps saying is there any Jack Russell's on the TV? look on the internet, so I did I have got one to. Made up nothing to know about the health.
My dad has two Russels (Brothers) fast, good hunters (They've killed rabbits, snuck up on birds and worked together when hunting) excitable, lovable and totally out of control!
my Jack Russell is VERY OLD and he barks at loud noises SOMETIMES and he is VERY LAZY. I also have a Border Collie and when my mum takes him to the park, he ccnt stop playing with the ball. On the other hand, my Jack Russell just sits in the park and STAIRS at you until you go home! DONT LOOK AT HIM, THAT STAIR WILL GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES! 0_0
While i watch those dogs in th video run around at lightening speed, mine lays on the floor with its paws in the air waiting for someone to scratch his belly.
I have two of these dogs. It's true that they are as crazy as they look. They hunt everything in my yard to the point where no animals like to come through anymore. They've chased deer before
i got one and second best to the pits i used to have, but she was a rescue and i am glad she came to us and she is well behaved and is awesome around my two year old i know not the case with all of them and she is an all around awesome puppy!!
@MasterNicolas77 It DEPENDS! If you have can give the time and attention these dogs need than the JRT is perfect for you. Also, this breed is SUPER hyperactive so if your a very active or athletic person that this is the right dog for you ! :) If you d cant give that kind time or patience and not an daily excercise type.. than get KING CHARLES :) These dogs are SUPER INTELLIGENT and patient trainer is the best. If they are left alone they get destrucive.
@MasterNicolas77 That's the number one reason that JRTs end up at animal shelters because owners could not handle them because they can get out of control. I"m not discouraging you to NOT get a JRT because this is a wonderful breed but really do some research and talk to breed owners because they are the experts :)
I hate these little fuckers, there's one in my neighborhood, when I walk by the yard he's in with my boxer dog he's always barking at us, but when he's not behind a fence and me and my boxer go close, he shits his pants severely :)
this dog is soo funny my girlfriend has got one. he can be having an attitude but when he wants something he is the sweetest boy in the world. super cute dogs and well behaved if you train them proper
I must have the worlds laziest jack russell! He loves to sleep and cuddle, hates to jump, and hardly ever barks! He does have the strong will though, but mostly when trying to get him up to do something! My toy fox terrier (known in the neighborhood as "the hoppiest dog ever") is WAY more energetic than he is and she is twice his age! He goes to the vet regularly we've talked to them about this before and they just say he is "special" haha! But the best cuddler ever!
@Lyndzeelou Jack russel of a frend of mine had a cushion on top of the radiator. He never came off only for food. I guess some are just lazy as hellXD.

@Pearly403 Lol, everytime I try to play fetch with my dog, he makes it very, very difficult. XD This is what he does:
-When I reach for the ball, he runs away.
-When I chase him, he runs towards me and makes me turn around.
-When I bait him with a treat, he'll drop the ball 3 feet away and eat it.
I feel like I'm the one getting more exercise than Buddy XD

I had a Parson Russel puppy for three days, but my mum turned out to be allergic zo we had to bring it back. It was the cutest puppy ever! I would sit on the couch and it would come over and put its paw on my knee begging me to pick him up. They're cute, alert loveable and smart if you train them. I miss him sooo much!

this reminds me of the time my own Jack russel had pups, I aways went lying down in the door opening so they wouldnt come through, but the little thieves grouped me up lol! overwhelming me 300 style. funny part is they only wanted to do what they werent allowed to do, get over me into the hallway! when a pup was over me they just turned around to climb over me again..and again and agaaaain.

@Shew8619 they are one of the smartest breeds. my jack russell learned lie down, sit and stay at just six weeks old. when we went around an agility course she got it straight away. they dont bite ankle, well only when there puppies but if you keep them busy then they won't. you clearley havent owned a jack russell becasue they can be the most cuddest friendlest dogs ever mines great with young children and my cat and shes great for keeping my bed worm in winter, so don't be a hypracrite.

I have a Jack Chi (Jack Russell Chihuahua). She is completely psychotic. She's the most loyal dog I've ever encountered (coming from her chihuahua roots) but also the most energetic and vocal (not just barking, she makes a HUGE variety of sounds). She's tall and has the short coarse hair but has the big pointy ears of a chihuahua. I was going through a huge slump of depression and my mom got her for me. She saved my life. She's brought out so much joy in me that I never even knew I had. :)

my Jack Russell is VERY OLD and he barks at loud noises SOMETIMES and he is VERY LAZY. I also have a Border Collie and when my mum takes him to the park, he ccnt stop playing with the ball. On the other hand, my Jack Russell just sits in the park and STAIRS at you until you go home! DONT LOOK AT HIM, THAT STAIR WILL GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES! 0_0

also, i can't stress the importance of socializing this breed around other animals. If you don't, you will have a nightmare for a pet.

I have two of these dogs. It's true that they are as crazy as they look. They hunt everything in my yard to the point where no animals like to come through anymore. They've chased deer before

i got one and second best to the pits i used to have, but she was a rescue and i am glad she came to us and she is well behaved and is awesome around my two year old i know not the case with all of them and she is an all around awesome puppy!!

@MasterNicolas77 It DEPENDS! If you have can give the time and attention these dogs need than the JRT is perfect for you. Also, this breed is SUPER hyperactive so if your a very active or athletic person that this is the right dog for you ! :) If you d cant give that kind time or patience and not an daily excercise type.. than get KING CHARLES :) These dogs are SUPER INTELLIGENT and patient trainer is the best. If they are left alone they get destrucive.

@MasterNicolas77 That's the number one reason that JRTs end up at animal shelters because owners could not handle them because they can get out of control. I"m not discouraging you to NOT get a JRT because this is a wonderful breed but really do some research and talk to breed owners because they are the experts :)

I hate these little fuckers, there's one in my neighborhood, when I walk by the yard he's in with my boxer dog he's always barking at us, but when he's not behind a fence and me and my boxer go close, he shits his pants severely :)

this dog is soo funny my girlfriend has got one. he can be having an attitude but when he wants something he is the sweetest boy in the world. super cute dogs and well behaved if you train them proper

I must have the worlds laziest jack russell! He loves to sleep and cuddle, hates to jump, and hardly ever barks! He does have the strong will though, but mostly when trying to get him up to do something! My toy fox terrier (known in the neighborhood as "the hoppiest dog ever") is WAY more energetic than he is and she is twice his age! He goes to the vet regularly we've talked to them about this before and they just say he is "special" haha! But the best cuddler ever!

@Lyndzeelou Jack russel of a frend of mine had a cushion on top of the radiator. He never came off only for food. I guess some are just lazy as hellXD.
