I loved watching this show.. With all the specials they had before then, it beats me why no one thought to do it starting in, say the late 60s or early 70s.. Having to wait for CBS to play the specials was almost too much to bear.. know what I mean??
My guess is that it wasn't until the early '80s that Saturday morning budgets became friendly enough to accomodate this kind of series. After all, the late 60s and most of the 70s were the absolute pits as far as TV animation goes. Bad writing and severely limited movement.
Sure, these characters' movements are spare, anyway, but it's by design. If they had to be done on a microscopic budget like the really old Saturday morning shows got, it would have been an ugly sight.
You know, the more I think about it, the more that makes sense.. It does put things in perspective.. It's so easy these days to talk about the coulda-been's and the shoulda-been's..
