The rest of the movie seems to be about a girl but in the book Remarque pays much more attention to the devastation of war, and shows it vividly in his words. Pity that the movie is so crap, but it's usually this way. if you want great story about war, read this book. this writer also wrote many other war novels. My favourite was the three friends.
He gets his top off after about 50mins to reveal "that" chest.
But, yeah, it's a great film & a very controversial subject matter for Hollywood to deal with back then. As was his "Imitation of Life" which tackled the race issue.
A superior film, although Sirk took some grief, apparently, as some saw this film as an apologia for German activities in the East. BTW, what a relief to see authentic uniforms, instead of 1918 helmets on Wehrmacht troops.
Last time I saw it was about 15 years ago, here in NYC. A Douglas Sirk retrospective. YES - this film's vastly underrated, and unknown. When I saw it, John Waters was sitting behind me (if you've seen the film, you know why he'd like it). Several years later, I ran into Mr. Waters, he said; 'how do I know you?' I said A Time to Love and a Time to Die....and we both chuckled. GREAT film.
no need man all war movies are about selfish people..since the word "love" is in this..a soldier meets a girl and rest of the movie will be about her..actually they don't want to make a movie admiring Germn soldiers and all that in that way...but why dont they then make a movie about American soldiers? I like to see a realistic movie of ww2 how the international millitary really organized in to such a huge work..
First saw this movie as a kid. It was one of those nights were I stayed up watching whatever was on. I fell in love with this movie immediately. Great book by a great writer.
One of mine, too. I'm a huge fan of Douglas Sirk and consider this to be his masterpiece, even though "Written on the Wind" and "Imitation of Life" come close. Imho, this one is shamefully underrated and I sincerely hope that it will be recognized as one of Sirks most important, most perfect films in the future.
I totally agree. You hardly hear anything about this film when people discuss Sirk. In my humble opinion it is the greatest film ever about the second world war and one of the most original and radical experiments of classical hollywood in its decline, right up there with Vertigo and Touch of Evil.
A bit of trivia, Erich Maria Remarque's sister was guillotined after she was sentenced to die by Judge Roland Friesler for "Defeatist Talk"
