I'm 16 at the end of my school years, I think that when the british controlled Ireland upto 1916 they forced the english language upon us and thats why we still speak it today. I have to admit though it is too easy to evade having to learn the Irish language in Irish schools and take the state exams. I too wish that we spoke our own unique language just like the Spanish, French and other nations but we don't.

@pabloaqui99 It's not so much that we don't like our own native language. I'm 16 at the end of my school years, I think that when the british controlled Ireland upto 1916 they forced the english language upon us and thats why we still speak it today. I have to admit though it is too easy to evade having to learn the Irish language in Irish schools and take the state exams. I too wish that we spoke our own unique language just like the Spanish, French and other nations but we don't.

Irish as a language was subjugated greatly, however, that's true. The real failing in the lack of proficiency is the actual method of teaching. Like any language it should be optional to learn in school.
