Predrawing frees you up to exaggerate and you always make modifications as you go. The pre draw is just a loose template, that can be, and is abandoned once you really start feeling the drawing, so to speak. Even on this vid, he does the first eye which is predawn, then does the other two eyes freehand without the pre draw
He does pre sketches so that the demo will go smoother. Doing pre sketches doesn't take away from his drawing ability. In fact many of us top caricature artists, myself included pre draw in pencil prior to drawing the inked sketch. I know this artist personally and he is very skilled. Definitely the real deal.
I agree, the eyes are one of the most important---I think we all agree :). Some faces are so proportional to me, I find it hard to imagine what to exaggerate. I notice that some even use a trick in which they create features that the person doesn't have, but it also accentuates what they do. Like a subject with full lips--an artist may make their chin really small even though it isn't to help the lips stand out...Stuff like that
it's amazin' I like it...

@straitjacketdrummer and if you notice even more carefully, he mentions in thebeginning of the video that he pre-drew the eyes on the canvas. -_-
