I know that there are fewer cases on this version than the (now defunct) American Prime Time one (22 as opposed to 26), but seriously, way more people won the top prize here than in the US version. Even the first (only?) person to win the million in the US only won because there were TONS of million dollar cases on the board, right?

There Chances of picking a box containing 250,000 is 1:22. That is pretty good. But the chance of being picked is also 1:22. So the chance of both things happening is 1:484.
Of course these are the odds at the beginning of the game and as it progresses they change. I must confess it makes me laugh when I hear most of the players' ''strategies'' for playing the game....birthdays, house numbers, ages etc. Hokus pokus and jibberish. Learning simple probabilites would be more useful.
Even if the players were randomly selected from a total of 22 players ( Which they are not ) it would still be a 1/22 chance of that person having the £250,000. Not a 1/484 chance. When the players select their boxes at random at the beginning of the show each player has a 1/22 chance of selecting the £250,000. Even then if the player was then selected randomly from 22 players it doesn't increase the odds to 1/484. It remains at 1/22.
In the UK, you are not taxed on any winnings from competitions, lotteries and game shows. We recently had a couple win 56 million pounds on the euro-millions lottery. 56 million pounds untaxed.. crazy. That is about 110 million US dollars untaxed.

Good luck is what happens when the odds are against you and you still win. She wasn't lucky, she was sensible. It took some nerve to pass up on a guaranteed £45,000 but the prize of £250.000 more than five times as great for a 1:2 shot.
No bookmaker on earth would give a gambler such good odds.

There Chances of picking a box containing 250,000 is 1:22. That is pretty good. But the chance of being picked is also 1:22. So the chance of both things happening is 1:484.
Of course these are the odds at the beginning of the game and as it progresses they change. I must confess it makes me laugh when I hear most of the players' ''strategies'' for playing the game....birthdays, house numbers, ages etc. Hokus pokus and jibberish. Learning simple probabilites would be more useful.

Even if the players were randomly selected from a total of 22 players ( Which they are not ) it would still be a 1/22 chance of that person having the £250,000. Not a 1/484 chance. When the players select their boxes at random at the beginning of the show each player has a 1/22 chance of selecting the £250,000. Even then if the player was then selected randomly from 22 players it doesn't increase the odds to 1/484. It remains at 1/22.

In the UK, you are not taxed on any winnings from competitions, lotteries and game shows. We recently had a couple win 56 million pounds on the euro-millions lottery. 56 million pounds untaxed.. crazy. That is about 110 million US dollars untaxed.
