  • I used to think we'd nuke ourselves. Now it's looking depressingly likely that we're already locked into destruction through climate change. The "small" warming we've made through CO2 is going to release large amounts of CO2 and methane from melting permafrost, sending things spiraling out of human control even if we collectively were dedicated at stopping it (which we aren't.) My overall comment on the situation, as AVGN would say "what a shitload of fuck."

  • Hi There: I am really taken with the photo of ape to man to man crouched back down at a compter. Could you give me a link to find that photo?

    Thank you, Sandra

  • Yeah I agree Im all for space exploration . And to keep it 100 slightly after the Apollo missions United states should have been planing for colonization on the Moon and Then Mars . Heres a time line 70's to 90's a moon post and colonization. 90's to 2000s a trip to Mars and then 2000 to 2020 a mars colonization. But the Wars and Economics have been a major distraction for the United States. That Bottom line has to be taken care of first or the foundation will toppel.

  • We coulnd't win our moon yet, you are talking about others planet! How long it could take time? till then will human being survive?

  • I think you are right about the "capability to prevent our own demise" and "Anihilate ourselves"

Have you ever seen a dog looking at its own tail flapping around ad biting it and causing itself pain? When he lets go, it moves and then he bites it again and hurts himself again.

Now imagine some great alien race, or many, all watching us now and simply laughing at us and having discussions on whether or not to even bothering to step in and show us how we are biting off our own tail.

  • Thanks for this.

Wonder if I should take up this Baxer guy or just re-read Stark by Ben Elton

We may be the first spices with the ability to both save and destroy ourselves, but we are probably also the only spices where individuals are capable of going truly insane, and yet surviving to have a great impact on society.

A wild animal will die when it really loses it, but humans all too often go on to be presidents, prime ministers, popes, über imam or tin pot dictator.

    Weird isn't it?

  • Definately pick up some books by Stephen Baxter. I suggest starting with the Manifold series.

  • Hey Nathan

trying to go through yr playlist (uprating) but i get stuck lol :S I enjoyed listening to the poetry, i agree with most of your views about Islam.

But by far i prefer videos like this one.

You are a fresh breath here in youtubie land ;)

  • Then stick around, Happyfallen! There will be more videos like this. I have a lot of ideas left! ;)

I've just been incredibly busy recently and have not had the time to make any good vids.

  • oh yes i will!

i am busy myself, and i will come lots of time late on your vids, but i will always make an effort to watch.

I am still not finished with your playlist, tonite i will watch some more

    cheers!

    Maya

  • Thank you you have just explained why all the aliens in star trek look humanoid.

  • Hey I'm a big fan of Baxter as well.

  • Baxter is an absolutely fantastic writer! Which books have you read?

  • It's been a while only just found out you replied, Xeelee Books; Timelike Infinity Raft Flux Ring Vacuum Diagrams Manifold Book Space (my fave Baxter novel) But my current favourite author is Alastair Reynolds Revelation Space; my 1st of his, I highly recommend it Cheers
  • As we all know, we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction that our Earth has experienced. This one is the only one that can be blamed on a single species, H. sapiens. Pretty sad but also true. Good idea for us to look to another biosphere for a future home. NASA has us at 450 p/mill CO2 by 2035, if we don't change things quick. We are at 375 and climbing. At 450, they are not too happy of the repercussions that will come from this level. Looks bad for us and millions of other species.

  • All we need is lightspeed, Then we could go to alpha centauri.

  • Alpha Centauri is a binary star system, Probably not a wonderful place to live around. Along with that is Cantauri proximus that is gravitationally held to the binary system.

  • This was definitely a good one. I'm going to have to dwell on this a bit before I send you a video response... but I will send you one.

  • Thanks, man!

    I look forward to it!

  • Humanity in general has proven to me that we are extremely intelligent with primitive intentions (e.i. nuclear science). Pretty fucked up ain't it?! Especially when we have the capability to work together, I mean, we don't have to like each other or w/e, but thinking primitive can only get a man so far...if far at all...

  • We can never be eternal because the universe has a finite existence. We can however last a lot longer than we are slated to by expanding into the universe.

  • Agreed. That is what my next video is going to be about.

Do you know of Dr. Michio Kaku? He speculates that perhaps humanity may be able to "jump" universes to another bubble of the multi-verse, saving itself from the heat death... or whatever other way the Universe will end. Obviously it is just speculation since the multi-verse theory is unprovable... at least at the moment.

  • Oh yes I am aware of Kaku. I also agree that the multi-verse theory has merit and even explains the "Where did the singularity that caused the big bang come from" question.

  • Exactly!

That is how I rationalize the big bang singularity, as well. I hate it when fundies get confused when talking about the big bang. They always seem to say, "So, let me get this straight... in the beginning there was nothing... which exploded..." No, you fucking dolt! That is not what the big bang is at all!

  • I don't think you appreciate just how exited Simon gets when you mention Kaku, he loves him!

  • So do I. Kaku is one of my favourites.

  • yea, in all fairness, he is awesome!

  • When ever people say never, I get nervouse lol.

We don't really know what we can and cannot do billions of years from now.

how do you know that we won't be able to recreate a big bang within THIS universe drawing more energy into the universe from other dimensions or something lol

  • would that be ethical?

  • Depends don't it!, if there is life within the vicinity then probably not lol

I think the whole reason for doing this woudl be heat death, so it would be for the greater god in any case, but I am sure if we have the technology and the know how tio recreate a big bang, we would also probably have the sense to do it in a region of space that is unoccupied..because we as a species always do the right thing...

    ;p

  • I disagree with kaku a little on the subject of changing universes to escape the heat death.... firstly I dont beleive there will be a heat death, and secondly I think we change universes every moment of our existance. I'll be interested in reading the hottest new physic books that might come out later this century to find out some of the final answers to questions like these. Multiverses and their interactions are still very much in the hypothesis stage here in 2009.

  • Agreed...kinda' ;p

  • On an individual level I consider myself to be pretty optimistic. When you start gathering huge masses of people my optimism starts to crumble. If our species can't get over silly myths from way back when, how can I stay optimistic about our species not self-destructing?

  • Agreed.

  • Sorry, how do you Terra form Venus?

  • you would have to cool it down first. if we could shift its orbit it would go nicely on the farside of the sun in the same orbit as earth ^^

  • The only way I can think of was what I suggested ages ago, some kind of huge space shield that would block the sunlight, but that would be a massive undertaking!.

how do you shift a planets orbit?

  • increase its angular momentum.

  • If they knew, it would have been done. The point is that it is a rocky planet ( not a gas giant) so it is a candidate.

  • Understood, but the point I am making is, is it not going to be so much of an undertaking to do it that it just wouldn't be worth it?.

Mars, great lol, Terra forming mars woudln't be that hard, all it takes is time (and some resources)

Venus would be a MASSIVE project!.

  • massive on our current scales. If we had some self-replicating machines that run on solar power it might not seem so massive.

At the very least these nanites could take it to peices and frikken move it, given enough time to replicate and sunlight to power the whole thing.

Now thats currently (2009) total sci-fi, but who knows what the future brings?

  • "these nanites could take it to peices and frikken move it,"

wow!! lol, yea that's gonna happen next week ;p

  • yeh right after the noodle beast sends elvis back to us!

  • i hope they bring back Elvis too, and wile there at it, 8 track tapes!

  • Great video Nathan. Probably your best one so far. I'm sure they'll get even better. You should definitely make more of these kind of videos.

  • Thanks! :)

  • Man, you have some of best videos I've seen on YouTube. I was thinking about doing a video response, but you've said it all! I wouldn't really be able to add anything to this!

  • Thanks, man. That really means a lot.

  • No problem. Your videos are cool. And the discussion that you and Crosisborg are having is awesome. I love thinking about what could be out there. A "parallel" universe? See, that's the kind of stuff that inspires me. Religion is finite to me. Space? There's so much out there that we haven't seen.
