just to nitpick drawandstrike's comment. In MSR the horizontal cut is across the upper body. Going for the muscle groups and, as drawandstrike mentioned to create space. In Seitei the cut is for the eyes. Makes switching between mae and shohatto 'fun' since you have to change the blade level.
A plastic Saya is softer than a wooden one and can sometimes bend but a bokken is far easier to noto (as long as you don't get wood burns) as the Koiguchi is far larger.
MSR is Koryu ... Seitei is selection of many style (ryu) ... Mae is "mae" :-) Seitei is collection ZNKR for all. Word "Seitei" mean the "Basic" skills. MSR is a special style ... different... and old. Seitei is more younger.
For the Ryu-To technique at 3:20, he is drawing straight upwards to deflect a blow aimed at his head from the side. He uses his sword to deflect the strike of the opponent as he rises, then makes his own cut before the enemy can recover.
Notice the horizontal cut from the draw - this is to 'cut' across the enemies eye level. The theory being you need to get your sword out and create some room because the other guy has already started his attack. So the movement from the draw is to make him interrupt his attack and back up; if he doesn't he gets a bloody cut across his face at eye level. The followup vertical cut is supposed to hit him either on top of the head or on the shoulder and cut through to the breastbone.
"I-ai jutsu", speedy sword tactics against very near enemies, are various. All the samurai had his own tactics of sword suitable for him. After 1860's theoretical forms are determined by some schools of swordmanship. I think this film is one of them. Tactics against opponent at all occasion, in room or at gate or on road, sitting or bowing or walking, and so on,
In the Zen Nippon Kendou Renmei video with Ogura sensei the proportion between sword and stature looks quite different. It seems to me that in this one the sword is longer. I'm wondering why...
I practice Muso Shinden Iaido, I'm about 6'3", and the sword I got when I started in Japan is 2.8. So I think the extra length has to do with the noto, not just the person's height. If I try an Eishin-style noto with my sword, it is very awkward.
Some Muso Shinden stylists insist on slightly longer swords...my Dojo in Toride, Japan did not, but I have seen many who do. Perhaps Nagae sensei belongs to the 'longer sword' school of thought.
I have watched this 4part series so many times now, i just love it! This is the form for me!!! Most of the 12 Seitei waza are Muso! Matasaburo-sama is awesome!!!
Very nice! So very simular to Seitei Iaio, i can see Muso Shinden Ryu has had a major influence in the development of Seitei Iai! I study Seitei & Hokushin Shinoh Ryu Iaido! I would like to study Muso Shinden Ryu next, but there isnt a Muso dojo or sensei anywhere near me! But thanks for posting such a great vid!
Wow, this is cool stuff...I practice Eishin Ryu Iaido. The arts are similar, but with some stylistic differences. Here's my dojo: japanesemartialartscenter dot com. Great vid!!
hmm... I too train Muso Shinden Ryu. A summer camp is coming up soon in Gothenburg here in sweden, that Shizufumi Ishido, 8 Dan Iaido Hanshi, 8 Dan Jodo Kyoshi will lead. It will be great!
I train this, Saite Iai and Muso Shinden Ryu, it looks great but it is really hard to do this right, this first "kata" called Mae in Saite iai is one of the easiest but if you don't know how to stand or how to keep balance you will fall and it is quite dangerous with a katana =P this vids are great, I hope to do as well as him some day ^-^
Does anyone know when this was filmed?

I have a plastic saya and it often bends at the Kurigata level when I'm doing noto.
Lliane94 1 year ago
It depends on the saya really (I used to use a hard plastic one but the newer ones are softer) and how tight your obi is.

Yea but the saya is so cranky that you cant really do a sayabiki like with an iaito

a question on bokken practice for iaido....
when performing noto, how does a wooden saya feel in comparison to plastic?
what are the pros and cons of wooden saya?

MSR favors katana longer than the standard height-length relationship.
