She does! Funny? Charming? Is this supposed to be either funny or charming? Or well sung? It's just Natalie, doin' her shtick. And why the pained expression on any note above A? And why would Marie ever be so rude to Tonio, she's in love with him!
I guess they wanted her to look like she was raised by a bunch of men? And as for her vocal quality - she really doesn't sound so great in the London broadcast. She sounds great in the Vienna production (I have her rendition of this piece from Vienna up on youtube too). The only thing that sounded better in London, in my opinion, was her "Salut à la France."
I think the performance in London should be dated 2006 not 2007. The new production was premiered in Covent Garden in 2006 not 2007. From there, it moved on to Vienna then the Met. Recording at the Royal Opera House is not easy and have to be discreet as patrons like us will not accept the slightest of distraction to stop us from appreciating the performers to the full. Opera at the ROH should be seen live. No recording will do them justice.
She looked pretty good for someone who was in a battlefield, no full length mirror and makeup kit. She is doing ironing, the heat from the iron means she should be wearing a T shirt. She will 'roast' if she were to wear a ball gown or full military uniform.
For me, she sounds effortless but it does not look like it. Why? She acts so intensely and it is very very very very very....dificult to catch her breath in all her action. Compared with Joan, she sounds as effortless, but Joan has no acting, and very very very very very....little engagement with audience so her face remains still
Since the First World War, the idea of soldiering being glamorous has been rethought. The days of them all wearing bright-coloured uniforms and parading like Mr D'Arcy or Harry Flashman are long gone. In Donizetti's day she would have looked dashing and sexy in an army uniform, now the realities of a war zone have made costume design very differant.

Comme Molière l'a si bien fait dire à Mme Jourdain : c'est aussi sot par derrière que par devant !

Regardless of her voice maybe not being what it once was, I still think she's done a fantastic job taking commic roles to their fullest potential.

why does Dessay have to look so trashy and unattractive in this production? Plus the sound's strained, bel canto is supposed to be effortless.
