@thebaldeagle121 Totally agree with you about Hirt's rendition of this tune. His phrasing is spectacular and I've listened to it for decades, and always shake my head in recognition of how good his interpretaion is.
@3melizza I think it's Great that young people open their mind and listen to music from all eras. Bunny Berigan' s version was cut in 1937..my dad was 7 years old then. He made sure I listened to Swing, Big Bands, Country(old and new) and of course Rock and Roll from Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello. Melizza, you've given me hope that there are still young people who use their brain and don't just follow Konye West and Lady Ga Ga like Sheep. Thank you.
Berigan had the definitive version of this song for decades. Not to take away from that, but Al Hirt owned this song on trumpet. Listen to ANY of his recordings of it, and you can tell this song is in his soul. By himself, with Andy Williams, with Maynard Ferguson, any way you turn it, Al "gets" "I can't get started" like no one else.
Not bad, but nothing approaches the original by Bunny Berigan. I'm not referring just to other versions of this song. No version of any song is as good as Bunny doing Can't Get Started.
That wonderful voice is the famous Shirley Horn who was also an extraordinary pianist with her own trio and for a time also accompanied Carmen McRae. Thanks so much for posting. I love these lyrics.
Great cover by Wynton - wonderful musicianship although he lacks Bunny's passion.

Any trumpeter who does this tune is really paying homage to Bunny Berigan and his definitive 1937 performance.
