This is the airline that landed the following year in Kuwait two hours after the Iraq invasion in order to land British undercover military operatives, risking the lives of over 350 passengers.
The same airline whose senior management threatened a British HIV positive passenger with arrest unless he left the relative security of the transit hotel in Kuwait to report to an Iraqi controlled hospital.
I am still a flight simulator newb, but I have to ask. Would the left rudder have helped you line up better, or was the crosswind way to strong for rudder to have an impact?
They do land crabbed, but soon after touchdown there's a heavy job to do with the rudder, to realign the body axis with the rwy center line. You miss that on the FSIM replay because FS does not show the control surfaces moving on replays.
They don't land crabbed. Landing like that puts a tremendous side load on the landing gear which could easily cause it to buckle. Go get your license man.
@TheAdhocrat I do have my license now, smartass! :P I am technically allowed to fly a 747 I just need the type rating which takes 2-3 months, and then I could be flying you on vacation ;)
This video was made before I started my education as a pilot. BTW on youtube you can find lots of real life footage of 747s landing like this and the gear handles it.
@TheAdhocrat: they do land crabbed, but soon after touchdown there's a heavy job to do with the rudder, to realign the body axis with the rwy center line, for landing gear's sake too. You miss that on the FSIM replay because FS does not show the control surfaces moving on replays.
In real life, you would have to add left rudder and bank into the wind in order to straighten out the aircraft. If you land sideways, even though you're going straight down the runway, you would blow out your tires and cause substantial landing gear damage.
May I just point out you are supposed to straighten the aircraft prior to touch down, You crab in (as you did) and then at flare height you use oposite rudder to straighten the aircraft. You must never touch down with the aircraft at an angle to the runway. That would cause serious damage and risk failure of the undercarriage which is not designed for side force.

I dont no why it is rated 3*, I cant even do a crosswind in 10knot, so from me, thats a dam good crosswind, Not the best i've seen, but better then what I could do :)
Why do all of guys have to criticize this guy just over a game. So what if his front wheel was 1 millimeter out of line from the centre line, wtf. Why dont "critics" go and make a video like and then show off your perfectionists crosswind landing? Go speak nerd to all of your fsx friends. Leave this guy alone.
Well... The comment section on YouTube is actually meant for critiquing... If that's not what they were for, there would be absolutely no reason to comment at all.
If you watch the real videos, after first contact of the rear landing gear, the pilot uses the rudder to turn the direction of plane before the nose gear comes down. This is probably doable because all of the wieght of the airplane isn't on the gear yet.
I find it funny that in FSX, when you land on an angle, the plane practically skids in a straight line, but it's sitting on an anlge to the runway. In real life thewy straighten up before they hit the ground, but if the did land like that, the plane would just roll in the direction the nose was pointing.
Thanks! :) Well have fun on your flight! :) I love the 747! It is from PMDG team. Try googling either PMDG or precisionmanuals. It is also available for FS9 :)
While this scenario is often tested and seldomly performed, the approach is pretty good but on landing the aircraft must be straight, even in heavy crosswind. Landing sideways would cause terrible stress on the landing gear and will blow out tires. It's proper procedure to push hard rudder just before touchdown to straighten the airplane.
I know this now, but when this video was made, I had zero real life experience. You also forgot to mention that when kicking the rudder to straighten up the aircraft, you also have to bank a little to the side the wind is coming from in order not to be blown off the runway.
At that angle you really would have torn your nose gear off. You need to straighten up nose gear on the flar and rear wheel touch. and nose has to be last wheel down.
Nice video. Just wandering what aircraft that is? I knows its a 747-400! lol, but i notice the cockpit is different to FSX...is it from an odd on pack? Any help would be apprecciated. Thanks

@PhantomBadass I am now a real world

make a proper crosswind landing.
Also, yes, the undercarriage is not designed
to land sideways like that, but nevertheless
you can find loads of videos on youtube where
aircraft land even more sideways (real world)than I did
in this video made in FS.
