  • I like Cathy Hughes because she loves her people. She's not perfect. No one is. She's not alone in her thinking about Hollywood rewarding Black actors for playing the criminal, servile or pathetic of our community. We complain but we go to the movies. Hollywood GETS our money. If you think about it, Hollywood ain't GOT to change anything because no matter what Blacks love entertainment and we WILL give them our money. :-(

  • I think she is full of it. I think she has a personal issue with Monique because I think Monique had a radio show on one of her stations and I think she was fired. I think Monique put her on blast so that is where she's coming from...I think. To say there arent't black women who stoop that low to treat their own child that way....I beg to differ...I worked at a hospital and saw it. There are women of all colors who do horrible things to their own children. She's in denial.

  • When Blacks win awards it does seem to be of them playing lower than dirts characters pimps hoes etc. Look at hustle and flow and all the awards it received however a man dressing up as a woman doesnt seem to have as much clout to it either. Ill take Spike Lee over Tyler Perry anyway.. If you hate the way blacks are being portaryed then unite save up your money and start your on hollywood.

  • I like what she said about Tyler Perry.I don't like a lot of his shows and movies but I do believe that all in all he is doing a good thing.I also agree partially what she said about Monique and Halle Berrys negative portrayal of black women being rewarded. However,if she really believes that there are no women out there who are as lowly as Moniques character was in Precious...then she's dreaming.

  • Preach Mama, as a black actor this was a much needed statement that needed to be said. Hollywood is ran by race, money and connections. Not talent

  • I hated Precious too!!

  • I think she gave an excellent interview. She makes some very valid points about about black women and how they are portrayed in Hollywood. My only point is, I don't like when people talk about black men and women separately. We are one. There are enough people outside of the community who try to keep us apart as it is. Overall though, good interview; I can appreciate her for keeping it real.

  • Check out The Mills Connection Show our goal is to Educate, empower and enlighten !!!

  • A 28-year-old Macomb County man was being held Tuesday on a $1 million bond on charges that he sexually assaulted and impregnated a girlfriend's 11-year-old daughter. Trevaun Brooks was arraigned in Mount Clemens District Court on first-degree and second-degree criminal sexual conduct charges.

  • @kevin0070 SO!!!

  • from this day foward I'll always support TV ONE, thanks for this interview. I can understand her, I see she is not being disrespectful to Moinque but she is disappointed in the fact that Monique had to be the receipent of an award that honors a degrading image of a Black Woman.

  • This woman is a hypocrite, she had Monique on her tired show PRAISING the show NOW she want to throw shade? GTFOOH!

  • @Luckey2007 She didn't say she didn't like Monique it's the ROLE she did in precious and Halle witjh Billy Bob thorton what type of "hyt" is that.

  • @khadijahanwar and she praised Monique on the role and even said she read the book. It was on one of her TVONE One On One and they talked about it. The woman is a hypocrite..

  • I love this lady.

  • HERES THE THING.... WE ALL HAVE A CHOICE TO WATCH THESE "PROGRAMS" OR NOT. CHANGE STARTS WITHIN.....ONE MUST CRITICIZE HIS OR HERSELF FIRST. IN WHOLE T.V. IS A DOUBLE EDGE SWARD BOTH GOOD AND BAD....TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING MAKES YOU AN ADDICT......"Keith Clizark"

  • Radio Doesn't give you the opportunity to promote your music like it should. I'm not going to say give you a chance because chances are, if you go to them with good material, your already a star in your own right. They mainly just play ATL. material. KnoxieTy is one of the best lyricist, person, artist out there who teaches positivity, that's why she moved out of the U.S. Why not play her music?!? Your business endorses negativity Mrs. Hughes.

  • 1st of all, how are you going to praise Tyler Perry in one breath, then say Precious shouldn't have been made, when was a producer of the show along with Oprah Winfrey???? Get your facts together.....2nd...s she not watched BET or TVOne??? What significant programing is on either channel?? 3rd Radio1, plays how many degrading rap songs about women??? So what is she talking about?? BET and TVOne have the opportunity to really change "black" televison for the better..Instead of constant reruns!

  • tyler perry is another who highlights black women in lower than a postive light. and perry doesn't pay his black staff the same ppls he's trying to upleft. and madea is a drag queen but this is called a christian film, he's no different from ru paul.

  • At 2:03 she said no black women is that low life. I beg to differ LMAO. Matter a fact it gets lower then that.

  • FUCK CATCHY HUGHES! SHE OWNS RADIO ONE.

IF YOU EVER WONDER WHY YOU HEAR LIL WANYE, DRAKE,BIRDMAN,ATL DEGRADING WOMEN, GANGSTER RAP. SHE IS THE REASON FOR THAT!

RADIO ONE NEVER PLAYS ANY POSTIV RAP OR RAP WITH A MESSAGE!!!

AND THEY NEVER SUPPORT LOCAL TALENT!!!!

  • She is such a passionate black woman, I really love her.

  • I love Cathy Hughes.

  • there are black women out there that are as low as the character played by Monique, Just like there are low and immoral women of every race and color. Though i would just have to agree that its bad that both actresses that won an Oscar's won them for playing such negative and demeaning roles.

  • She needs to shove it every race has their flaws the African race is no different : Jews are cheap, white trailer trash, Spanish pig etc every race has been stigmatized in some way or form if you listen to what she has to say and agree then you too believe you are this category of black women "like Monique role" personally precious was a work of true art nothing to smile about I am one of those children who have live a mirror life to precious so I know the reality of that this woman wants to t

  • This old lady speaks the truth and most successful black entertainers and business people in entertainment always avoid that topic.

  • Well there were some well said points but I remember when she interviewed Mo'Nique for the show "One on One" and she seemed to be praising her, who might I add got her start working for her (if I remember correctly) now she is saying all this. It's like "throwing her up under the bus"; she goes in on Mo'Nique for her role in "Precious", but praises Tyler who came with the movie; it was almost hypocritical. I think we need all aspects of entertainment.

  • Cathy you are so Awesome you make me so proud....Please Anyway I can help you !!!

  • PLEASE, Monique played a human NOT a race. This type of one sided artistic bondage is suspect. Is she only concerned about a female image - she seems to love Perry whose monolithic Colored Girls was nothing compared to the one monstrous character in Precious.

  • Speak the truth! Go Bosslady!

  • lmaoooooo she said it should've been burnt

  • yes black people r portrayed in a negative light in Hollywood, but people like the characters portrayed in Precious r REAL!!!! i do want to see more positive black roles...we will get there

  • ev_gueno@yahoo.com

  • I really hate uppity black people like this woman! She actually said there are no black women as low as Monique's character in "Precious": BULLSHIT, they are everywhere but the point is that a woman like is everywhere and those types of women transend race. Halle and Monique have done a great job of protraying women who are trouble, vulnerable and damaged and those women do reflect a reality that uppity bitches like this one don't want to see or believe really exist!

  • @metzsymph But why are they are potraying more black women in those types of roles than any other race. Its more images of BW being jealous, insecure, angry and loud that young ladies today think that its a culture. Its not about being uppity its about better potrayals.I mean an academy award for that? Please! Its bad enough that BW are seen as the worst women on Earth to get invovled with and the entertainment reinforces it.

  • @dua72 Only you sees or believes this to be true about black women and so what if a few nuckleheads think that all black women are this way; it's clearly not true at all and if you want that to change you have to be that change! As far a Hollywood goes; the name of the game is MONEY so we shouldn't be blaming Hollywood for our protrays we should be blaming ourselves (if at all!) Like I said before, those movies made money because they were based in a reality that is visible and everyday!

  • She is the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I am so inspired by this sister here! She is so wise!

  • @datniggacheski....Cathy Hugues is NOT part owner of BET, she owns TV ONE!!! And although I rate TV ONE over BET which I will not even watch, all of the people in this arena play games to keep their money coming in and sell out in various ways. I HATED what Tyler 'no talent' Perry did to that play, it was awful and I am SICK of BLACK MEN IN DRESSES! I HATED PRECIOUS which made dark skinned black people looked like evil incarnate while making light skinned and white people look good. TYPICAL!

  • First of all Ms. Hughes, I saw you interview Monique, "pre-Precious", and YOU were gushing all about how you had "read the book, it was powerful and you were SURE she was going to do a good job of the part; HYPOCRITE much?? Additionally, it's not as if the characters involved in that "REAL LIFE DRAMA" (as it was based on a true story) are dead; they were involved in the making of the movie. Sad that was a real woman's experience, but it was what it was. Get real and work to correct real life.

  • Who going to check her boo!...Love her thanks for not being a manican like so many others.

  • Who gonna check you booo!!!...Go Ms. Hughes you said it well!

  • Tyler Perry promoted Precious. Cathy Hughes hates Precious and yet she promotes Tyler Perry.

  • Damn. I didn't know Cathy Hughes went that hard. It was pretty funny how she stuck to the point about the negative roles and wouldn't deviate by going into the acting behind the negative roles. She wasn't going to say one good word about any part of the situation. Hahah.

  • I agree with Cathy Hughes. I respect her for not holding her tongue. She did not try and sugar coat anything either.

  • Even if there are "Precious' in the world it is not worthy of the big screen or in a book we need to project the images we aspire to be their is nothing artistic about that movie I left the theater wondering what if any message they were trying to convey Oprah is very hypocritical in this regard ,she will demonize rappers over there use of the n-word and the word bitch but she contributed to this equally disgraceful form of entertainment.

  • Getting rid of Tyler Perry and BET is what the black community should focus on.

  • @fckitshow Before they focus on BET and Perry, should stop beating the hell out of their kids like it's some it's a friggin' religion.

  • @fckitshow Why dont we get rid of you and your sorry ass comment. Do you know how much joy, education and spiritual enlightenment that Tyler Perry has brought to the black community. You moron. Not to mention people can identify with alot of the stories he portrays on screen because of his experiences with people that he's known in his life with real problems and issues. He himself has gone through tribulations to get where he is. His stories brings joy and laughter out of pain and sorrow. Dummy

  • @fckitshow BET perhaps but Tyler Perry...no. Is anyone calling for an end to Martin L.'s career or that of Jamie Foxx??? They dressed in drag and never tackled any real issues while doing it. Tyler Perry is a black man with power in hollywood who has given many black actors jobs who wouldnt otherwise have them. He has the respect of Cicely Tyson, Maya Angelou, Kimberly Elise, and Oprah Winfrey....black women who dont feel degraded or insulted by Madea who is intentionally hyberbolic and atypical

  • @fckitshow

The People should focus on doin things that create wealth for the community.

  • Talk about a contradiction. The Madness of the Hour

  • I agree there needs to be more positive depictions of black people getting recognition in maintstream media. But she really lost me when she said "Precious should've been burned. No black woman is that low life." They're not? Despite Precious being a fictional story, if she TRULY believes there are not Mary Johnstons and Clarice Precious Jones out in the real world, then SHE's QUITE delusional. Precious is IMPORTANT because it's SOMEONE'S story and it NEEDS to be told!

  • Don't forget "what's love got to do with it". All black men looked like Ike Turner when that came out

  • So she praises Tyler Perry with his "Colored Girls.." dehumanizing portrayal of black men but Monique is the worst thing ever? Talk about bias, she can't see past her nose

    Hypocrite

  • @3rdEYEbeHolder Oh I forgot "The Color Purple" who started the male bashing trend to begin with lol. This woman is TOO typical of all women in general.

  • @3rdEYEbeHolder AGREED! What could have been more pitiful than all those black women who couldn't control the events in their lives? One didn't have the strength to get rid of a man 'til he kills her kids, another couldn't keep her husband from raping the daughter (then took her for an abortion). I thought Felicia Rashaud was good 'til I wondered why (as apt. manager) she didn't use her key to go in and HELP Kimberly Elisse . And the ONLY 'positive' image of a black man was the policeman; HUH?

  • She really should mix it up. Have your comedy shows, have your dramas, have your black success shows as well as your "American gangster" type shows.

  • I can relate to what she was saying, but there was no need to criticize. What's love got to do with it was a great movie, but Ike was whipping Tinas ass, it was sad and shocking, but that does take place in some households. I always thought she had mire class than that.

  • I suppose Carlotta Pierce and Shaquan Duley are positive examples of black women? They killed their own children. Have you ever been down to the child welfare administration? The stories will shock you. True, there should be more positive shows on television, I'm all for that. We just have to remember that there are cases such like the one in the movie precious. It was hard as hell to look at, but tgere are things like this, and ignoring that fact will not make it go away

  • I see what she is saying but there are really women like the one Mo'Nique played. Its sad but true.

  • This is the same woman who criticized President Obama before she saw that he was winning. Now she is magnifying Mrs. Obama? And why pick on the Black actresses that won awards from a predominantly white show, she is just trying to malign the issue so she could use it to her advantage, sad and insidious, true snake in the grass. Stop putting down our own for merits and stop speaking half truths. And then she praise Tyler Perry? Do she know what other races think of us when they see the Madea?

  • I wonder if Ms. Hughes has seen Love That Girl? I'd love to hear her thoughts about how Black women are portrayed on that show. I'm quite sure that the ridiculously ghetto receptionist wouldn't meet the standards she mentioned in this interview.

  • And she lauds Tyler Perry, yet he perpetuates those stereotypes of Black ppl in his movies, does she know the hide your wife kids guy, how far is he from one of those Tyler perry characters, have she seen for colored girls how demeaning it was to Black men? And this woman chairwoman or TVone are all her programs noteworthy for her to be casting stones? Is her issue because those women won awards for their portrayal of those characters? Either way she seem deprecating toward some and hypocritical

  • Why is it sometimes we Black ppl are our own worse enemies. She has a point about the portrayal of Black women, however, characters like the one in Precious do exist in this world, hiding it under the rug, is not going to aide the issue, nor will it go away, at least Precious had a message to it and does she know Tyler Perry was involved in that project?

  • AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY....TRASH NEVER SELLS REGARDLESS OF COLOR....

  • Not sure how to feel about that interview....

  • YES SISTA! SPEAK!

  • The NAACP didn't have a problem with Precious. They gave Monique and the movie an Image award.

  • Its sad to say, but i cant wait until black people with the same ideals of Cathy's generation pass away, & the children born in the Obama era become leaders. When are we as black ppl gonna stop worrying about art we create, because of how it "depicts" us to the world.Do you ever get tired of living to appease the "whiteman?" smh If other races are ignorant enough to judge based only on stereotypical movies then you'll never change their mind so stop! and do you

  • Meanwhile, she's part owner of BET, responsible for some of the WORST depictions of black people ever.

  • @datniggacheski NOT TRUE.

  • @datniggacheski I never heard she was part owner of BET. Please show me proof.

  • @mmou3878

"Hughes is also a minority owner of BET industries". Quoted from Wikipedia. Doesn't matter to me personally because I do not watch BET at all, but I thought I would post that. Of course Wikipedia could be wrong as not everything on there may be accurate.

  • @datniggacheski

Check your facts! She had no ownership in BET. You may have her confused with Sheila Johnson.

  • @datniggacheski

Check your facts! She had no ownership in BET. You have her confused with Sheila Johnson.

  • @datniggacheski I don't think she own any stock in BET.

  • She makes some points but falls short when she says "particularly" the way black women are portrayed. black men put up with so much more bs in the media and Hollywood more than any group of people including black females. As for monster ball that was nothing but a soft porn movie precious on the other hand was very good.

  • This woman just contraindicated herself badly. SMH I understood what she was saying about wanting African Americans (in particular women) being on film & televison. She got on Halle & Monique, but to bash them and say Tyler Perry is doing a great job is fucking laughable, foolish & hypocritical.

Despite that Perry is employing African-Americans, the damage that his films & plays has done is high. He CONSTANTLY bashes African-American men and ALL of his works are stereotypical.

  • @PharoahsKingdom

Good to know I'm not the only one pointing this out. Precious, Color Purple, Monsters Ball, Colored Girls....These are all movies with the same agendas behind them.

  • Those ladies gave dynamic "portrayals" of horrible women in a motion picture setting. Cathy Hughes is full of shit if she believes that no woman of color behaves in the manner portrayed by Monique in Precious. I don't particularly care for either of the actresses mentioned but I acknowledged that they offered performances that couldn't have been anymore opposed to the carefully crafted images these ladies have.

  • she looks so happy and without the fear that we see in many of our wealthy black successful people. She lays it out on the table and does it with honesty and love and that is THE MOST ATTRACTIVE THING ABOUT BLACK WOMEN!!

  • I totally agree with Ms. Hughes!!

  • Comment removed

  • Wtf. She look like a muppet

  • @funfdogg Your crazy she is one of the most attractive older women around and she is RIGHT and black women need to study her and help her.

  • Love this woman. Can we please get TV One on Cablevision.

  • Cathy Hughes is a Race Woman...thank God!

  • Ok Ms. Hughes I'm a hold you to your word about positive Black woman roles we will see in your programs. Image is important and your words were inspiring.

  • Thats true what she said about tyler perry....he has supported, and got more of these black folks in the industry positions that they would never have got, crawlin after white folks....

    MA'AT

  • @MegaMalik30 True but WHAT cost my dude?Tyler Perry is on some bullshit with the shit he's done. His works ARE not something to be proud of as an African-American.

  • what's the name of that song that starts @6:25?

  • @jimmyred1978 The song is called System. It's off of the Precious soundtrack. Ms. D.

  • @MsDramaTV Thanks!

  • 1ST STAY BLESS MS HUGHES A STRONG POWERFUL WOMAN
