I also work in I.T. - Primarly we are Windows based desktop/laptops/mobile devices. However management seem to like the iPad - probably because compared to other OS's it very simplitic, I totally disagree that the PC is dead though Steve Jobs was so wrong about this, however as simple mail reader and browser its sufficient enough. Andriods are lot more difficult for typical user ie senior management, I mean I reckon most people on here - could configure one with their eyes shut.
translation... "Can I bring my TOY into the office to play with it and look like I'm doing something important?", lol. Simple OS is not the reason. Potential may be large, but it's still larger with what they already use, pcs. It's not that it can work. It's that why would a business use something that is less practical, more expensive and would slow them down? Of course there are nich applications that could benefit from tablets, but that is the key word and not ipad. They wouldn't
2) - choose apple for the same reasons they didn't in the pc sector. They will likely choose some other tablet if they need to display pictures for purposes such as sales. apple is primarily pitched to the younger, uninformed crowd who happens to be ready to spend in order to usually make a fashion statement, or show a college they could "afford" one. They are mostly used for showing off and entertainment. Of course the tablet can do anything, but in the end a business will
3) only choose something if cuts operating costs way down and makes them more money. Historical that leaves apple out of the picture because they tend to make image based products that often are outdated, slower and more expensive. Or are quickly surpassed by competition. PC market has proven this over and over with faster, higher quality, cheaper solutions. iFans can claim it's the opposite by quoting apples misleading, exaggerated advertising, but succeeding businesses know the truth.
4) My $700 i7 based pc that's faster than an $1700 imac for rendering is a good example. I suspect tablets will be a money makers for some niche businesses that need to maintain a certain image to prospective buyers. It all depends on what they are selling or doing of course. It could be ipad, but again, in many cases if someone can pick up a $130 tablet to show real estate pictures, they will. It's too early to tell, but I suspect the future of business will echo this pattern.
Sir, I have a gentalmen that is computer deficinet that is currently running an A/C company in Florida. Needless to say, busy. Does the ipad have an application that pdf forms can be completed by writing on the screen in the applicable field location that will translate into a completed form, record and business application tracking record? I have two Macs but primarily utilize them for graphics and sign creation. Thank you for your assistance please email me at Bhuffsmith@tampabay.rr.com.
The iPod touch has an awesome calculator and the apps are great I rather the iPod touch or iPhone cause it's more portable carrying the iPad out I would be way to afraid of it getting stolen or dropping it
I was really interested in hearing some more ideas on your real world examples... You briefly state some ideas on how it could be used, but you don't go into detail at all on how people could benefit from those ideas while using the iPad.... I thought it was funny to hear you talk about the credit card transaction idea and then you go right into information about there being no way to take in information from the iPad, ie.
no camera, scanner, digital input whatsoever... How would this iPad credit card transaction work? I'm sure the people involved in the transaction would love having you write down there credit card number on YOUR iPad and storing it on YOUR iPad then taking it right back to YOUR office and putting the full number on YOUR computer, yea that would work out great, what a pipe dream....
As I previously stated, this whole iPad craze, of it being able to be used as a business platform is absurd, it is for multimedia ONLY and that's all it will ever be used for... People use netbooks and laptops for a reason, to do work and business and that will stay that way till the next format comes out, which is definitely not the iPad...
there is a app that takes credit cards. you just type in the card number and it charges the card on the spot. you can even buy a card swiper and wipe it aswell.
Wow man you've got all the little macboys up in a flutter.. First off what's the ipod itouch? Never heard of that, I've heard of the iPod Touch, I know I'm being picky, but someone who's so well versed in the IT World as yourself should know better than that... You state that the iPad can be used in a business environment, I think that you're way off... It's a multimedia platform, I've only seen people use it for playing games, fart machine applications, and/or watching movies/listening to music
Hey Norm! I love the new iPad and think it will be great for business.. I heard though, that it doesn't have any print options. Maybe they will add that later along with the camera.. the camera would be nice for Skype for those not using it for business! Good to see you!
you are going to love my video on the ipad, it is all about using it for business. its uploading now. People do not understand that the logistical chain in software is much cheaper via the iphone os vs using a full blown desktop os. great video. you are stating the very same things. 5 stars.
