  • wow, i hope those "pressing engagments" were worth being excluded from 155 k+ views..

  • Also - They don't always look so reluctant and lethargic when they perform. This song calls for and creates a grim, downer mood laced with thick sexy syrup. I think their demeanor as a band is appropriate and adds to the performance.

  • This version is preferred by far over the album.

  • intro sounds like Nirvana's About A Girl... )

  • If you guys like Beat Happening, you might like some of my songs! Just saying... Anyways, this is one of their best!

  • The older I get, the more unimpressed I am with the whole "reluctant performers who don't know how to play their instruments" thing. Although it seemed fresh at the time.

  • I bet these guy thought they were the next Velvet Underground.

  • @minedarea They kinda were.

  • @bricitybrac They definitely weren't.

  • reminiscing on my teenage angst years

  • what line-up is this?

  • Pearl Jam once did a cover version of this when they played the Gene Peak Arena in McBean, Ga. Eddie introduced it as, "Here's a song about eating s*%t"

  • @2313Productions that sounds awful. i hate pearl jam.

  • You know Calvin, you guys don't HAVE to perform for us if you've all got better things to do. Don't feel you have to go on TV and perform if you don't want to. I'm sure you guys have better things to do like hanging out in front of the drug store.

  • I liked these guys better before they wrote songs

  • So ahead of their fucking time.

  • sexy ;)

  • Calvin Johnson is a bit of a hero of mine. He started he's own label, he held the International Pop Underground Convention and he was in one of the best indie bands of all time.

  • I can relate to Calvin's voice. I sing as low as him :) Happy day

  • I want to have babies with Calvin.

  • @aokifumiko what the hell? :O

  • OMG! Ocean Spray!!! I drink their stuff! I love that he's wearing a...wait, he's not wearing it "ironically", is he? Almost had me going there. Goddamn hipsters, always mocking things like that. Fuck you, drummer, I actually enjoy cranberries!

  • @steveasat2 Not sure he is wearing it for any reason...other than its ...a shirt.

  • @steveasat2 I doubt very seriously it was ironical!

  • this video is relevant to my interests

  • I'm giving this a thumbs down not because I don't love Beat Happening, but because there wasn't nearly enough star and diamond wipes.

  • Hhahahahahahahahahaha..... that was some funny shit man. Oh, you were trying to be funny and stupid, right?

  • sick star and diamond wipes

  • the guitar is the same tune as About a Girl

  • @piemakesmelol also honey tong - driver. it's on my channel (the bassist from the breeders band)

  • @sunchild90 Well with only two chords a song's pretty unlikely to be unique.

  • @robotnudist there must be a 100 ways you can play 2 chords

  • @sunchild90 then About a Girl, Honey Tong and Black Candy are 3 of those ways.

  • @piemakesmelol both kurt and beat happening liked each others music, its possible one had they others song in their head and thought they had a new tune

  • Stage presence from the drummer lmao

  • these am fucking shit like

  • who was the band who couldnt make it? deaf leopard???

  • god his voice is SO DEEP

  • @julietbooze lol, no it isn't.. He is a tenor, that's actually quite high.

  • @WachaDrop ahahaha my bad

  • @WachaDrop he may be singing tenor here, I'm no expert, but I believe Calvin Johnson is a baritone

  • @robotnudist yes, he is tenor in this song, that's why i said that.

  • haharhar clavin's face at the very beginning!

  • does anyone see the similarity between the opening riff and about a girl?

  • @macmintire1 i didnt notice it until i read your comment. but it is kind of similar. not just the intro but the rest as well.

  • jesus christ calvin...sex-eeee!

  • I wish I had his hair.

  • Calvin is such a good frontman. I can't describe it.

  • i like how they do chinese fire drills

  • @GiveItToMeOneTime do you know anything about real music dipstick ? i mean anything at all ?

  • i wish you could still flip on the tv and see some bizarre public access show like this.

  • @RootShockerMusic I'd rather watch public access than the crap they have today. Music sucks, movies suck, tv sucks. it's all rehashed junk.

  • @JeffroTV you suck refurbished dildos . go listen to the jonas brothers .,... nobs like you dont know anybetter .

  • @KeithMoonLives4Ever What the fuck you talking about? I'm talking about modern (now) music sucks. I've been a beat happening fan since 89' along with sonic Youth, Vaselines, blah blah blah. I have no fucking clue what you're spewing? Justin Bieber wannabe. P.S. It's Noobs... not nobs. buttplug.

  • @JeffroTV ooh , wow , so impressed with the mention of S.Y and vaslns and as you say bla bla bla .... hehehe ... you sure are funny dpistick ... have a good one JEFFRO JONAS ! or shall i say BIEBER TS ....im impressed with your spelling , you sure do know how to spell . la dee daa !!!

    so , have tune weiner dude . : )

    kml4e.

  • @JeffroTV Nahh, pretty much all music sucks really.

  • @KeithMoonLives4Ever What the fucks your prob? Go suck Keith Moon's cock, you PinBallsack Wizard.

  • Violent Femmes un-plugged.

  • Jesus and Mary Chain?

  • like this check Dio..scorpions.sabbath.Iommi is god

  • is he playing about a girl at the start?

  • @YouFuckenConformists Kurt Cobain was a fan of Beat Happening....so prob Kurt subconsciously took it... heheh

  • this music keeps repeating in my head like its trying to tell me something about myself Im really in to beat happening and the hivedwellers+ the frogs+shonen knife I saw calven last year and have been in to it since I shook his hand and said this is the most amazeing thing Ive ever seen then he asked me my name and then I got his autograph it was awesome

  • Okay, I totally encourage the whole different music scene by using minimalistic tones and stuff. But to be honest, i think this is kind of, well, shit. At least this recording is... I'm probably missing something though.

  • epic drumer

  • drummer looks bored as hell

  • upload "let's kiss!" That way I can show my friends the sweetest/coolest song on earth.

  • @YUMMYngbird i think my favorite is catwalk...lets kiss is pretty awesome too... i don't buy CD very often but i can say i own a beat happening CD...

  • my fav band

  • @crosswalkernie that because you have your head up yr ass

go back to being spoon-fed your factory-fresh, society stamp of approval

bullshit. this is WAY over your head.

  • @wms72469 lol, right. You're acting all hardcore over twee pop dude, get a grip.

  • @crosswalkernie Hahaha. This comment is one of the best things I've ever seen on YouTube.

  • P.S. could someone please, PLEASE upload more of these beat happening videos?

i know that a lot of people have recordings of whole beat happening concerts, still they don't share..SHARE DAMNIT!! : )

  • this band had such a huge, positive impact on my life, it changed me as a person and my perspectives on music.

they where the minimalist-velvet underground of the 80's.

probably the best band after the velvet underground.

  • He's like the Jim Morrison of the 80's. Gotta love Calvin's contributions to music.

  • The guitar is a Sears Silvertone.

  • i have a huge man crush on calvin :s

  • I saw him live it rocked

  • i want to hump the frontman.

  • hahaha this is so cool. long live beat happening. proto indie gods.

  • sounds like About a Girl Nirvana. But this is from 88'. Bleach is from 89'. It's them riff!

  • @Grunge1894 Absolutely SOunds like about a girl. You're right, It's the same song Kurt just changed the lyrics melody

  • i like him in the halo benders more, but beat happening does rock

  • He reminds me of a not depessed unepileptic Ian Curtis, yay!

  • Really cool and really amusing at the same time! Beat Happening wins.

  • So catchy. I really like this song.

  • I've never been able to get into these guys. This didn't help.

  • Podrien aprendre a tocar!

  • Awesome guitar...

Their aesthetic almost reminds me of the Jesus and Mary Chain/ The Velvet Underground... maybe it's just the standing up drummer and songs about heroin though...

  • jajaja cancion imbecil! ta buena

  • reminds me of Joy Division

  • it's a song about using heroin. its not supposed to be exciting or make you dance around.. you fool, medeyes.

    BLLLACCKKK CAAAAAANNNDDDYYY, yeaaaahhh.

  • rabbit blood yeah...

  • haha. gotta love the first close up shot of Calvin.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, yeah, yeah!

  • I don't think it's good either but i love it.

  • Wow a bunch of thumbs down for expressing my opinion.

    Americans are so stupid.

  • i got to meet and interview Calvin for a project i did in one of my programs at Evergreen, he was a really cool dude i hope i get to meet him again.

  • no bass drum and no bass! hmmmm... odd

  • does anybody know what kind of guitar they are using?

  • @mysoncool42 i think it's a gretsch country gentleman

  • I don't even listen to punk music but I love this band. The reason is because they seem to be doing what they love doing, for the sake of doing it. They're being humble, and they're being themselves.

  • I was answering to myscrusade

  • the drummer seems like hes asleep

  • el grunge esta bn culero ii de la verga jajaja me gusta :)

  • omg i need his beat happening shirt

  • oh my god how the fuck didn't i know about them before.

  • I was thinking the same thing about this band

  • what band is he referring to at the beginning?

  • Beat Happening changed my life.

  • Of course they were serious. However, they were obviously very silly and deadpan, which was their style. Beat Happening made some of the most fun and original music of the eighties and nineties and inspired a ton of musicians. They showed that you don't need to have complex arrangements or even great production value to make great music.

  • Believe me they're serious... it might seem like it, but they are trying

  • lyrics! Listen to them. Calvin Johnson wrote some seriously dark, sexual stuff.

    "Jack hammer,

    can't stand her,

can't live unless I have her,

    sin, drippin' down my chin"

    so fucking great.

  • Sadly, no-one in the band is gay. Well, no-one is perfect...

  • Aient it the truth :(

  • I love the way this band upsets close-minded people. They did it back in the day, and it seems like they are still doing it now!

  • i really want calvin johnson's shirt. he looks adorable here. the others looks pretty bored, but i think it goes well with the deadpan vibe of the song.

  • i love this song mainly because of calvin johnson's deadpan singing. it's amazing.

  • no but go see the halo benders

  • Are they likely to ever play anymore gigs?

  • I can see how a lot of people would hate this. It just looks like they aren't trying at all - but it still sounds okay.

  • The most important lo-fi pop rock band ever! brilliance at it's highlight..

I would die just to see this band preform live..

    Very influential..

  • oh! sorry a girl ... a lady ... female

  • Comment removed

  • that guy on on guitar like Slash is not a guy ... its a gal ... sub pop yeah

  • What is a gal?

  • a girl

  • It's one of those Olympia Guy/Girls.

  • This guy plays on guitar like Slash.

  • bl ack candy yeah yeah yeah

    this is so miserable xDD

  • the perfect indie pop band ever. all the other ones from today pale in comparison

  • and I mean GENUINELY miserable. none of the shitty, 'my mom took away my ipod wah wah wah' bollocks around today.

  • I love how miserable they all are!

  • hmmm. WHEREVER did the riff for about a girl come from?

  • no, that riff came after an afternoon of meet the beatles.

  • no really though it's from black candy

  • Yes,definitely much better!

  • this is soooomuch better than whatis out now.

  • Totally pertect!

  • lolz I used to not really dig Beat Happening but now I hella like their style and their music in general.

  • una d mis bandas favoritas

    unos verdaderos genios

  • What guitar is that the guitarist is playing?

  • Silvertone archtop from Sears, I believe.

  • Weird but cool.

    Peace

    Joe

  • yeah

  • this song is cool but i like "whats important" better from the self titled album..i like the guys voice. i should've known of this band before.i bearly started to get into them.

  • My favorite Olympia band!

  • Oceanspray T-shirt FTW!

  • so fucking orginal though. Who else?

  • yeah they are totally great!

  • beat happening sort of draw that line in the sand, of whether you care about if you have heart (their side), or if you think yr technical chops will cover up that you don't have heart, nuff said. love it.

  • That's not the point of the band. Were the fugs the greatest musicians in the world. HELL NO. and they knew that.

  • They are the most original band in the world..I understand your opinion..you should check out Dub Narcotic Sound System or The Halo Benders..I think you would probably like them!! But Beat Happening is really good..listen to them more and you will grow to like them! Trust me!

  • I don't know about most original... they seem to be 'borrowing' their lazy style from the Shaggs. But they are pretty awesome nonetheless.

  • maybe...but true...checjk out DNSS and Halo Benders...

  • i cannot wait to see Calvin in Manchester, UK! its gonna make my life

  • one of the best versions of black candy i ever heard , some one put up the original version of indian summer on please, the beat keeps happening

  • The drummer is the fucking best

  • I can't wait to move to Olympia in the fall.

  • This video is pretty rough, but listen to the You Turn Me On lp. There are some really amazing songs on it and a lot of it actually rocks.

  • Calvin Johnson

    Beat Happening

    Enough Said!

  • Calvin is such a badass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
