Beat Happening changed my life.

Of course they were serious. However, they were obviously very silly and deadpan, which was their style. Beat Happening made some of the most fun and original music of the eighties and nineties and inspired a ton of musicians. They showed that you don't need to have complex arrangements or even great production value to make great music.
