I remeber getting on that bus all the time as a kid. :'( God! I feel crying. knowing that I will never relives those happy times of riding a bus in toronto.
So why are Quebec politicians forcing its transit agencies to buy buses only from Novabus because the plant is located somewhere in Quebec. The irony here is that transit agencies in Ontario buy Novabus LFS whereas Quebec agencies wont buy from Orion (made in Ontario) or New Flyer (made in Manitoba). This is in addition to Ontario sending billions of $ in equalization payments.
That aong with hundreds of MontreaL fishbowls shoulda stayed here, in Montreal. The STM would have saved millions of dollars rebuilding these instead of buying shitty Nova low floors! Man I miss the old days...
Sadly it was probably easier for Montreal's politicians to go with new Novas to make the claim they're keeping Quebec jobs and at the same time "improving" transit with low floor accessible buses, the operational portion of transit is where they stay away from which is likely where your concern about the Novas come from.
You two are talking about those accordion like arctics. Las Vegas, Orange and Los Angeles Counties (Hollywoodf therein and San Diego being among the earliest back in 1978 to have this honour!) have 'em.
Hey what was that old TTC bus where it was a bus but had some rubber connector in the middle and had another half of it, it was 4 wheels in front, then another cart with 2 wheels. i cant find it anywhere!
I know exactly what your talking about. That bus is the Orion III, just type Orion III in your search and you should find a video of it. The TTC initially had 90 of them, starting in 1995 the TTC began pulling them off because of severe frame and joint corrosion. In the end the TTC kept 19 and rebuilt them until 2003 since they couldn't meet service demands. The rest were scrapped or sold to OC Transpo.
Don't have any, sorry. They were all gone by the summer of 2004 before I even thought of this. There are other TTC fans who have short videos of them though.
Already saw that video, but thanks man, but boy I hate the fact that they retired the New Flyer D40-90s, that was my favourite bus growing up as a kid and even till this day.
Buses from increasing the fleet could go to restoring service back to pre 1991 levels plus add more service. This would win back a lot of riders. With high gas costs and car costs ever increasing this would be a no brainer. A 10 dollar metropass cut would also increase ridership necessitating raising service levels more likely even higher leading to revenue surpluses.
The ttc could encorage other fleets to rebuild ther gm new look fleets or buy ther buses and run them. The same with gm mci and nova classic fleets. The ttc could make parts on a massive basis in ther machine shop and make money selling to other systems along with parts ttc needs. The 40 extra buses could of been uses to increase service and new routes. Davenport road or lansdown garage could of been reopened.
The ttc in its machine shop and it would mean jobs which toronto needs as much of as possible, especially with the made in china craze that abounds us could start making many of the gm new look parts which there are currently not much of. The ttc can also make money making parts and selling to other systems and even rebuilding for other systems. Money made would go toward funding ttc routes
It takes 400 man hours to rebuild a bus right. At least 60 of the buses from montreal should of been rebuilt with buses being rebuilt into 2003 with the 30 worst ones not. If none worst all should of been rebuilt.
That of course requires parts and money. Cost of rebuilding New Looks is increasing greatly. All large New Look fleets are kept alive longer purely by using a retired bus as the parts source. Few New Looks are retired in good condition today. In 1998 that situation is different, there are still 1986 GM New Looks from the US that may have only retired due to age. Brills should have lived as long as New Looks but once parts were depleted its only a matter of time.
JeganV your a great guy. You have great vidios wher both big transit advocates even though we differ a bit we made great comments. Love to see more gmc new look and new flyer hf vidios. Your vidios are great and fantastic I love them they are box office gold.
All of the montreal newlook buses that started when they first came over plus bodies in shape where they would of passed inspection should of been rebuilt. The ones that would not start but bodies would pass inspection they should of been rebuilt. one that would not start, plus bodies no pass inspection should of been rebuilt if no more than 180 man hours would get them on road. 60 should of been rebuilt
You make it sound easy, its not that simple. When the Montreal buses came in, the TTC was expecting most of its GM fleet to not make it. However since many survived you have a problem, where would these extra 40 buses go? The next garage to be built would be done only by 2002, Birchmount doesn't have its extension and you have 52 new buses along with 51 the next year. They did the best solution and used the rest as parts sources to keep today's GM fleet running.
Montreal has much more snow than Toronto. The buses from montreal wher exposed to much more road salt and bumps. 35% of the best of the 100 should of been rebuilt with the parts from the rest going toward the rebuilding of the 35% plus new looks ttc already had. All of the ttc new looks should of been rebuilt. Montreal and nfta in buffalo just do basic reconditioning. They should rebuild the buses same way ttc does.
All 100 of the montreal new looks should of been rebuilt with service increases and new routes. These buses can run up to 38 years old with rebuilds every 6 years. These wher the best buses ever made. The recently retired gmc newlook buses taken out of service should be rebuilt and in service another 7 more years. Much cheaper than buying lowfloor buses 450,000 dollars a pop. Ther not as well made, and do not last as long, low capacity. Gmc newlook buses the best.
The real reason so few Montreal New Looks were rebuilt was mainly the rebuilding done in Montreal was done poorly making it time consuming also many of the Montreal New Looks weren't in as good condition as originally thought. Since the TTC was able to rebuild far more of its New Look fleet than it estimated the need for the STM New Looks diminished.
"since the Classic isn't very well liked." Depends on what part of the country you're from. Infact, in our neck of the woods, the LFS is not liked and we appreciate riding on Classics.
That is its official name from GMC, for 1959 it was indeed a true new look and rather revolutionary, today in 2006, yes its definately not new more like really old. The irony of course is its successor is called the "Classic" which would be more suitable name for the New Look today since the Classic isn't very well liked.

Yes, that noise.

Was this the last time 2600 was seen in service?
FamilyGuyFan2007 4 years ago
No, the 2600s were much more sought after by transit enthusiasts ever since they were introduced due to their differences with the whole fleet.

ah to bad

These buses that were purchased from STM in 1999 were retired in November 2006, 7 years after their original retirement from STM service.

Its the same model, the ones used to shoot speed are likely older than this one. Theres still many of these in Canada.
