Never knew Tim went that far. I have no words to describe the beauty of these sounds. Compared to his visions the work of Radiohead is totally overrated. They should listen to a piece like this - maybe they learn how to spell "experimental". I will always prefer Tim over Thom.
Exactly what I was wondering. It reminds me of something on Low, but it's creepier and spacier. Man, I'd like to add this LP to my collection. It makes me want to dust off my Trout Mask Replica or something wacko like that.
this is fucking brilliant. all of these sounds are VOCALS. so ahead of his time. then he went and tried to go back into the mainstream after this and he, well, quite honestly, those later albums sucked badly. but THIS. his last great album. so far ahead of his time.
I'll go to bat for Greetings From LA any day of the week. For my money, it's a much more cohesive album, if only because the lyrics aren't as (deliberately?) abstract as they are on Starsailor. Formally, it isn't as challenging as Starsailor, but there are some seriously intense performances there. And I feel like the raunchy specificity of the lyrics only bolsters the intensity of his singing. In certain ways, it's even more of a "fuck you" to mainstream rock than Starsailor.
It's now available on the Complete Works of Tim Buckley box set "T.B.".16 CDs including live concerts, demos, singles and all the official albums.Expensive but worth it.
No other artist has ever challenged his fans like Tim Buckley. I have read that Tim was disapointed that Starsailor was a commercial flop. In my college dorm however it was the hit of the year. At any given time someone would be playing Starsailor.
skitzophonic7556: I'll be damned if I don't agree with you. Tim & Jeff Buckley were geniuses whose subtle yet very significant influnce goes unrecognized to this very day. As I hear, Jeff had a lot (if not most) of his commercial success down under (Australia) (?) All I know, as a musician, was that these guys were awesome and I could get lost in their music for a long, long, long time. And as you say, criminally underrated.
Tim was an experimenter, that set his own style and course with no boundaries. This album is just more proof of that. Most of today's musicians would shit their pants if they had to explore the varied musical landscape that Tim fearlessly delved into.
A genius way ahead of his time...If I were tripping to his music I would prefer mescaline sulfate (500mg)especially rewarding listening to Happy Sad...Miss the beloved Tim.
I only mention Jeff because Tim was his father! I am from a totally different generation & wanted to see if I liked Tim's music as much as Jeff's. Ovbiously I don't, but that dosn't mean that I can't appreciate what Tim brought to the music scene back then.
This album is a whole new experience on a psychedelic. It flows wonderfully. You become a Starsailor. I'll never do acid again, but I consider myself fortunate to have tripped to Starsailor.
Was that ever true? I coulda sworn it was only mentioned in one magazine, coulda been a lie. If it's true, Sly Stone is a bit of a wank for allowing such an amazing musician waste away.

Does anyone know where I can find mv or just audio recording of "I talk in tongues"? Thanks in advance. Oh, it might be "I speak in tongues". Real sexy song and, as I recall, rare even in the day.
Another Buckley albumn that defies classification. But, Downbeat Magazine (the leader and most critical jazz magazine, gave it 4-stars) raved it. I imagine they equated it with the music of Sun Ra because they are both in a world of their own. But I don't remember, it's been a long time. Live-on Timmy!!! We miss you.....
did you really down load that from an LP? if so, can you tell me how. anything buckley does i will enjoy it. but i can see how he freaked them (the recording industry) out back then. the world was so different in that day. i wish i had known about buckley back then. his favorites were my favorites. buckley was so avant garde.
RISTAMPATE IN CD QUESTO ALBUM CAPOLAVORO, PLEASE.

Reminds me a bit of Gyorgy Ligeti (who wrote the eerie choral music in 2001: A Space Odyssey).

この曲こそ彼の超問題作である。

@UrbanSwagger wow. i was thinking the same thing regarding Bowie/Eno, how Starsailor may have influenced those late 70s records

I've never heard starsailor, it's pricey to get a copy, that's pretty trippy stuff, he was a master experimentor. :D

I bought this when it came out and thought it
was terrible. Now it sounds great. This came
out in 1970? He did speed so it's logical he
would complete the circuit with heroine.
He wound up driving for Sly Stone.

I can't imagine that this wasn't influenced by Ligeti's 'Lux Aeterna'.
You might have heard it from 2001: A Space Odyssey....
The lyrics....
I am a bee out in the fields of winter
And though i memorized the slope of water, Oblivion carries me on his shoulder:
Beyond the suns i speak and circuits shiver, But though i shout the wisdom of the maps, I am a salmon in the ring shape river.
