I have a 2010 Chrysler town and country limited and I must say that we drove it from Detroit to Washington D.C. And the captain chairs are more comfortable than what he says. I fell asleep in them easily. Plus my dad is 6'2 and he thinks they're pretty good
Yes and because its got a German name it costs a lot more that the Dodge & T&C.Do you also know that the Mitsubishi mid size P/U truck is a Dodge Dakota.Seems like the Japs & Germans know the USA makes better mini vans & P/Ups.
If you are thinking about getting one of these, do your self a favor and rent one for a week. I just got back from Washington where I had one of these for a week. It was a LONG week. The turning radius is HUGE! It steers like a cruise ship in a desert. It had 31K miles on it, it felt like it had 90k. The interior was cheap, the power doors usually worked, the power train was sluggish and jerky and loud. DO NOT BUY THIS VAN. You will regret it within a month.
A majority of you couldn't be more wrong about the two. appearance and spec wise they are very similar... however once VW got the van, they invested 10 million dollars into the quality and more importantly the suspension! drive both back to back and feel the difference. hate to say it like this but the Routan is the better choice, but its only the stepping stone to prepare the public for something better.
So does the Routan actually have better quality materials than the Chrysler vans? As in.. better use of plastics that are more pleasing both to the eye and to the touch.
idk. im glad chysler and dodge came out with an angular van their round one was just unappealing. but for vw to make a van, i never knew that they just copied it. originality? and its not a true vw if its just a copy! no one can seem to get the van right. the nissan quest 2000 was great. the high end model. but then nissan revamped it and all i can say is ewwwwwwww!..........Im no van designer, but as a person who loves vans and knows what they should look and feel like, come on people!
@puneet9212 because the Routan is built by Chrysler. VW just has them change a few things (ie grill and tail lights, the headlights looked the same to me) and I don't think the reason behind VW not having Stow and Go because of comfort, I believe it was maybe because that's a Chrysler/Dodge van thing.
yeah, vw threw this vehicle at the american market just to get a piece of the market.. but really, the suspension of this van makes or breaks the deal for me, it handles like a dream. Chrysler did make a big step forward in looks and feel for the interior. Over all, Chrysler motor and VW interior/handling, i'm sold to the routan, btw i test drove both these vehicles, and I suggest you do the same.
The VW Routan is a rebadged Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Caravan. The Routan is made alongside the Chrysler mini-van in Windsor Ontario's (Canada) manufacturing plant. So, is it really a VW?....I think not!! (Research it yourself if in doubt!)
you know, i consider the fact the volkswagen couldve waited another year, and designed there own engine.. the point of a damn minivan is for it to be confortable, and effient. if you want a damn 4.0 engine get an suv :D a guy, offered us a routan for 42k, and thats way to pricey for an american engine van. He gave us a 12year warranty on the body, and 2 year on the engine... even he knew the engines werent build to last. i agree with all of you :D
I have no idea why VW got involved with Chrysler. They lost money on the Routan; and it's not selling. The front and rear fascia are "VW" and not much else. VW had very little to do with the Routan. The steering wheel is a "VW" design. The dash is very poorly thought out, in my opinion. I don't understand why VW does not bring back the "Vanagon"? People expect that "euro" look and feel in a VW; if you want an American Van, buy a Ford, GM or Chrysler.
I can't believe that VW relied on Chrysler to make a van. The old rear VW buses were the original mini vans. VW should have kept making them and/ormade a retro VW bus like new beetle. They missed the boat. These are too pricey for the unreliability. Too bad. Someone needs to make a reliable 120-150k 18k minivan. Forget the auto doors, and power seats, heated wipers etc. Just make them, reliable, roomy, safe, and efficient. That's what would save the US auto industry.
Vw is not taking "credit" for chrysler's invention. credit for what anyway? unreliable, cheap, and uncomfortable cars? some of you are detroit koolaid drinkers who think the big three are good car makers and who think the big three are in the same league as vw or any euro auto maker or any japanese automaker. Euro makers are lux or mini lux, jap makers are reliability focused (along with koreans)... us? cheap, ugly, unreliable... don't compare.
Apparently, VW is a Big 3 Koolade drinker as well. VW had a better chance of recreating the Vanagon, or even the Microbus instead of copypasta of a shit van from a shit company.
I agree with your assessment re: remaking the vanagon... VW already has the heritage! But the reason VW went this route are because of pure economic reasons. Rebadging an existing car is cheaper than creating a better car from scratch. Routans might not be great cars, but it was an easy way for VW to get into the minivan market. I personally think VW has betrayed a lot of us multi-VW owners with their ideas lately (e.g. North American Compact etc). But they are still better than the big 3.
Oh yea, I definitely understand though. I really shouldn't be judging VW like that though because decisions like rebadging the Town and Country, is really because money is tight. I wouldn't necessarily say that Volkswagen betrayed us volkswagen fans in terms of ideas. At least volkswagen tries to be honest with what they do. Maybe VW will take this existing design they have and make it better for the next model year.
What are you talking about? Lots of people need to seat 7 or 8 people. We need the third row in our car all the time. Even if you don't need all the seats there is alot more room in a van than a Forester for luggage and stuff. I don't think Subarus aren't really off road vehicles either. More for snow. I guess you could take them off road but I wouldn't. Foresters and minivans don't generally compete.
Yeah there is more cargo room but where are u going in a van not even on a dirt road. Foresters are good offroad they can transfer up to 100% of power to any wheel they make some of the world's best rally cars with there awd system.
I don't think you know what you're talking about. DUH the Routan is designed and built by town and country. Volkswagen is lucky, they will have better reliability with chrysler. The volkswagen doesn't have the second row heated seats so... Chrysler has a better design and they are more appealing to consumers. Volkswagen has a history of problems and so does chrysler.. but chrysler has announced the best quality they have ever had. Buy American. And support our economy!
Correct. I did some research about the VW Routan minivan, and it says that it is manufactured in the RM Chrysler platform. It's interesting of how VW is taking credit of Chysler's designs of its minivans. The design of the VW Routan looks as if VW redesigned the Dodge Caravan. In other words, this is their version.
Just like kittychang1 I have questions, too. I am considering either a Honda Odyssey Touring or a Chrysler Town & Country Limited. The car will be exported from the U.S. to Sweden, where I live. Which one of these two minivans is the best choice? Thank you for any advice! Best regards Daniel.
The Routan is definitely something to experience for yourself if you get a chance. The German engineering is the truth! Check out some of the vids on our channel with Brooke Shields :)
I am thinking of buying one, but there are alot of bad reviews on the Routan, mainly its connection with T&C. Since you drove one, can you tell me about the turning radius, wide or it can make small turns? I am driving an Odessey now, great van. Kitty:)
Chrysler and VW working together?! NOW THATS EXCELLENT! Thank god for companies like Chrysler and VW making beautiful cars and NOT co-operating with the filty gooks (except for that Hyundai shit with Chrysler). 5Stars!
Because they know that Town & Country is the best car in general concept, and it is a good thing for Chrysler to get some royalties for licensing VW to produce Routan based on their van.
I think that Porshe-VW should work with Chrysler to produce great cars. One could cooperate with another perfectly. This van shows the proof of it!
most chrysler products turn out to be crap after a few years, reason they depreciate in value so rapidly. i would like to know the reason vw decided to take such a risk with it's reputation. even the chrysler engine looks like something from the 1980's.
VW says it made the mini-van but now credits Chrysler and instead of making a van, they take a Town and Country and make it a little better. And, even more weirder, they say it's "German Engineering"... Strange... At least it's a little better...

muanntep my dad works at a vw dealer ship and they got 6 of these in stock and so far 2 didnt start and 1 broke down 2 times after it was sold alot of volkswagens break down though..
i thought the same to.. but they are smart. it cheaper for the vw thats better inside. on hell an american classic the caravan (i hate saying that) but once vw gets there foot in the door they have plans on offering their engs and trans. and hopefully a tdi. let them get the foot in the door 1st! and this is coming from a 2000 TDI NB and hating chrysler products. (but since the past merger with MB chrysler has got their shit together somewhat)
but toyota is a Japanese car... It is made by Japanese peeps!! Asian cars cannot be compared with a German car even though this one is half Chrysler...
but toyota is a Japanese car... eww! It is made by Japanese peeps!! Asian cars cannot be compared with a German car even though this one is half Chrysler...
I would buy the Routan over the Town And Country because it looks better on both the outside and the inside. The only thing that it is missing from the Town And Country is stow in go and swivel in go. Other wise it has allot of similar options.
Who cares? It's a just a niche car for a local marked, like U would find i mexico or china. Vw has always had this segment of crapy cars along the line of real models for the EU marked.
If you are looking for cars on craigslist and want to search multiple locations and categories then download CraigsList Reader. Just search for craigslist reader on google.
Although still not the best, Chrysler's reliability has been improving and was better than Benz at the time of the merger. Even if the materials aren't tres chic, then they are at least tough. Reports of last generation VW products (like the Mk IV Golfs and Jettas) leave much to be desired. Let's not also forget that if Volkswagen had engineered themselves an all new minivan for NA, then it would have taken even longer to get it to market, and would have been prohibitively expensive.
It's amazing how the posts on a video about minivans have so much less swearing in them than the posts on a video about a sports car. Coincidence? The Routan would have been so much better if VW engineered it themselves. C'mon guys, you can do better than giving us a Chrysler clone.
The chrysler's stow n' go seats they showed you, that was the LX model because the limited model and signature series model has seatbelts on the second row seats' shoulders and the model you showed us had the seatbelts where a regular car has them. Why does the signature series model and limited model have the seatbelts on the second row seats' shoulers? So the seats could turn around and face the third row without the seatbelt being twisted.
I was really excited to know VW was offering a minivan. The design is more appealing than the current selection of minivans in the market. Then VW ruined it. They've made a mut of a van. VW is known for great interiors and using bits of Dodge plastic is an upset and let down. Then they went with Dodge motors too! They should've stuffed their 3.6L 280hp V6 FSI engine mated to a Tiptronic transmission. I'm not sold on this. I'd still rather get an Odyssey.
That may be true. But the interior is German engineered in some spots. But since I know I won't have my new 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan for long, I won't have to worry about high mileage. Foreign made minivans (especially Japanese models) are notorious for lasting forever, whereas Domestic minivans aren't they may run for 200,000 miles or so but then their motors seize. Usually due to wear... But yea, I won't have my new Dodge for the rest of my life, so mileage isn't a big deal for now.
It is made on THIS continent..in Canada...it's NOT foreign...go back and listen...or, just hear what you want and be happy in flower land...tra la laa....that's exactly what they want you to do...oh...it has a VW logo...I happy now.
I just wish they'd done it for REAL. What manufacurers don't get is that we want a GOOD van, and good looking. We're stuck. If you have three kids, and one is in a car seat, you need a larger car (you can't seat three with a car seat in the back seat of any regular car). They just keep giving us over priced junk that breaks down. Very frustrating. I wish it was real, not just a brand slapped on top.
Very nice, had a town and country and the steering went out twice. It was still under warranty but it shouldn't have happened to a new car. Glad I switched to a Honda Odyssey.
I believe it was a new 2003 Town and Country because we have leased two (3 year lease)Honda's since then. It was before the change over styles and stow and go seats (which are really uncomfortable for adults).
this car is unacceptable, beetle mobile is the surely one of a kind. i have watch the best car videos at viralmixx dot com and it those vids are great you should see that.
VW is good, but wow, i think we have moved past the mini van. WaY To late to enter the market, VW should be making a convertible SUV. or SUV with long sedan height. hard to explain.
The Chrysler looks way far cheaper than it's Volkswagen counterpart. And it shows. Hate that vi-dub name though, sounds like Rootin to me. Which the van is the perfect place to do some indiscretions with the opposite sex.
For me, the reason to own a VW is for the diesel engine that you can't get in anything else here in the US. Why didn't they do a TDI with AWD?..and a manual trans option? If you build it, they will come!
its a Chrysler, so its an amazing minivan! id rather have the Chrysler with swivel'n'go or stow'n'go... sirius backseat tv! and the chrysler haves a dual glove box... i like the chrysler better!
It has a market and people would buy it, it's a Town&Country with better build quality and looks. They would make a killing if it had one of their diesels in...
VW would be much better off than stealing a Chrysler engine. It's basically a chrysler with a VW badge. Shame on you, VW. Offer your own van with a clean diesel.
I have a 2010 Chrysler town and country limited and I must say that we drove it from Detroit to Washington D.C. And the captain chairs are more comfortable than what he says. I fell asleep in them easily. Plus my dad is 6'2 and he thinks they're pretty good

I would buy the Routan over the Town And Country because it looks better on both the outside and the inside. The only thing that it is missing from the Town And Country is stow in go and swivel in go. Other wise it has allot of similar options.

Mmmm, the same same minivan, that's very wrong...MMmmm, the same engine, that's even worst. Too bad there's no VW minivan, I hate logo swaps.
LP640KMX 3 years ago
Who cares? It's a just a niche car for a local marked, like U would find i mexico or china. Vw has always had this segment of crapy cars along the line of real models for the EU marked.
ninjapunk2 3 years ago
If they put a TDI in the Routon...they'd have a sure bet. Otherwise, why bother? I would have expected VW to make something more...THEM....SIGH.

i think that the volkswagen looks a lot better than the chrysler.

MyerShift 3 years ago 2
Mixing VW and Chrysler interior materials is like oil and water.
blkguynlex 3 years ago 2
It's amazing how the posts on a video about minivans have so much less swearing in them than the posts on a video about a sports car. Coincidence? The Routan would have been so much better if VW engineered it themselves. C'mon guys, you can do better than giving us a Chrysler clone.
VolkswagenType1 3 years ago
The chrysler's stow n' go seats they showed you, that was the LX model because the limited model and signature series model has seatbelts on the second row seats' shoulders and the model you showed us had the seatbelts where a regular car has them. Why does the signature series model and limited model have the seatbelts on the second row seats' shoulers? So the seats could turn around and face the third row without the seatbelt being twisted.
cyndie26 3 years ago
um not at all u can get stow and go on limited and signature series its a option
g35crazy 3 years ago
I was really excited to know VW was offering a minivan. The design is more appealing than the current selection of minivans in the market. Then VW ruined it. They've made a mut of a van. VW is known for great interiors and using bits of Dodge plastic is an upset and let down. Then they went with Dodge motors too! They should've stuffed their 3.6L 280hp V6 FSI engine mated to a Tiptronic transmission. I'm not sold on this. I'd still rather get an Odyssey.
Bosplya 3 years ago 3
I think Honda Odyssey is better in performance and quiet engine. Period.

So do I, but Im getting VW minivan, cause they are cheaper, and German engineering is SOO kick ass!!
Sabrina9500 3 years ago
but it isn't German. it's got an American motor. it's as reliable as an American vehicle.
Escaladefreak9969 3 years ago 4
That may be true. But the interior is German engineered in some spots. But since I know I won't have my new 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan for long, I won't have to worry about high mileage. Foreign made minivans (especially Japanese models) are notorious for lasting forever, whereas Domestic minivans aren't they may run for 200,000 miles or so but then their motors seize. Usually due to wear... But yea, I won't have my new Dodge for the rest of my life, so mileage isn't a big deal for now.
Sabrina9500 3 years ago
It is made on THIS continent..in Canada...it's NOT foreign...go back and listen...or, just hear what you want and be happy in flower land...tra la laa....that's exactly what they want you to do...oh...it has a VW logo...I happy now.
Tealorca 3 years ago
Oh really. Ok. Well they are still made with some german parts in them. Better than 100% American shit.
Sabrina9500 3 years ago
I just wish they'd done it for REAL. What manufacurers don't get is that we want a GOOD van, and good looking. We're stuck. If you have three kids, and one is in a car seat, you need a larger car (you can't seat three with a car seat in the back seat of any regular car). They just keep giving us over priced junk that breaks down. Very frustrating. I wish it was real, not just a brand slapped on top.
Tealorca 3 years ago
hey bitch, they aren´t cheaper, Honda Odyssey is cheaper

It doesn't really matter if it doesn't have Stow & Go... It still has an amazing seating system and comfortable seats... At look at that- 19" wheels!
VolkswagenRoutan 3 years ago
Very nice, had a town and country and the steering went out twice. It was still under warranty but it shouldn't have happened to a new car. Glad I switched to a Honda Odyssey.
b003 3 years ago
What year was your town & Country? That is a LONG name for a van!
cubswillwinin07 3 years ago

If you build it, they will come!
bcfast911 4 years ago
Probably because this van will spend more time picking up the kids and going shopping than 4-wheelin and racing?

chrysler will lower the price of the grandcaravan sxt with the 3.8 to around 25,000... they wont let vw undercut them

its a Chrysler, so its an amazing minivan! id rather have the Chrysler with swivel'n'go or stow'n'go... sirius backseat tv! and the chrysler haves a dual glove box... i like the chrysler better!

It looks better than dodge and chrysler's, but why make a brand new minivan? I mean, crossovers are the new thing.

Toyotacrossover 3 years ago
now why did VW do that?
DeathMists3248 4 years ago
Because Ford pays them to not sell their Touran/Sharan in the US.
Hubscharber 4 years ago
I hope this VW van doesnt come out, cause its basically a Dodge, and I think it'll give VW a bad rep.
DeathMists3248 4 years ago
It has a market and people would buy it, it's a Town&Country with better build quality and looks. They would make a killing if it had one of their diesels in...
Hubscharber 4 years ago
The Routon is commited to have success in the future- go Routon!
VolkswagenRouton 4 years ago 2
VW would be much better off than stealing a Chrysler engine. It's basically a chrysler with a VW badge. Shame on you, VW. Offer your own van with a clean diesel.
