AMAZING. I am in awe!!! This song really showcases J5 vocal talent and how wonderful their voices blend and complement one another. It literally brings tears to my eyes :’-).
45 rpm is how many times the disc would revolve in a minute.. revolutions per minute.. see how that works.. sometimes.. the definition is in the word..
@45rpmSingles. first off I wonder how many know what that 45 stands for. In talking to a lot of J5 fans on youtube I find myself explaining that very thing to a lot of em. Plus I do want to comment on what a nice touch to show the different album cover photos. Nice job
@clenten. Something else you should consider. The 50s were espec. terrifying for free-thinkers and talented ppls everwhere. The fascist and illegal senate Un-American Commitee, and the witch-hunts against rock-'n'-roll artist nearly destroyed Chuck berry and Li'l Richard, as well as others.Berry knew that under segregation heand his co.could be attacked by anyone from over-zealous consevatives to black-mailing mafiosos who were also heavily bankrolling music acts, to crackers burning down Motown!
@clenten. (Cont'd)...There is one other aspect of why Gordy, and some others didn't put his artists' picture on covers( by the way, this practice only lasted until about 1960-61.There were issues of royalties and payments to photgraphers (which I know nothing of).
@clenten. (Con)...And Indiana, taking jobs with them. So it was a volitile situation. In that case, it made good business sense. He didn't have to hurt the ppl who gave their all 'n' all to aggrandize him; they would have fared no worse with a white record co. As for the music, again, when you're running a company like that D-I-V-E-R-S-I-T-Y is the only business nodel that works if you want to survive and grow. Many old-time Blues\R&B ppl saw Stevie's "Fingertips" as bubblegum, and he wrote it!
@clenten. Like, why would ya say such a thing? By this time they were living in L.A., with all the sunny, fluffy hippy beach culture. This song, while not promoted, was a refreshing departure from the ussual bubblegum-tinged R&B\pop fare we're used to from them. And as I remember it, this song is either a cover or a variation of a similar compo written a couple of years before.
And the name's BERRY GORDY, who should be shot for his more infamously known dastardly deeds!!!
@Atomank68 I said it because this song is wack. no ghetto kids from Gary, IN would sing this on their own. living in california had nothing to do with it. berry gordy forced them to sing songs that they hated and didnt fit them, that's why they left motown.
@clenten. You have to understand guy, 35-yrs. ago was a world away from anything you can reference, unless your father, uncles, elders, and other mature menfolk guided you through that time. Standards were indeed different then. The Jackson bros(sans Michael, obviously) are good men who raised by a stern but exacting father(and mother). "Skywriter" was "beach" music sung by black and white alike. If you want to see HOAKY, then sample the J-5's "Rocking Robin" cover from the 50s. It went GOLD TOO!
@Atomank68 it doesn't matter what the time was. read moonwalker by michael jackson - his only official biography written by him. he talks about how the music became robotic and he and his brothers hated everything they did with motown after a while. gordy refused to let them write and produce their own music, that's why they left. this song is obviously an example of that. it may be even mentioned in the book, thats probably how i found it.
@clenten. You are half-right about the Jackson family moving to California. everyone who could afford it then moved there after the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT MADE IT SAFE FOR OUR PPL TO LIVE ANYWHERE THEY CHOSE! Or, so it would seem after 1969! Also, Berry Gordy moved the Motown operations to L.A.. He had planned it yrs.before, and stiffed many artists with the relocation; infamously known is how he abandoned "THE FUNK BROS."! Lastly, Gordy had plans to "own" Jermaine by foisting marriage on him!
@Atomank68 the only reason why they moved to cali was because of motown. gory only moved to california to become involved in films. in stevie wonder's mother's book "blind faith" she talks about how people in detroit viewed gordy as a sellout for moving from detroit. she also talks about how stevie was forced to do a whole "beach" album. california still had racism and only certain places where blacks could live long after the civil rights movement.
@clenten. So, ok, right. More or less as I stated, except for two things. Berry Gordy wasn't just viewed as a sell-out in Detroit; He was UNIVERSALLY DESPISED BY OUR PPL for being a destrctor, womanizer(with various Motown women, ). With due respect, he upped the stakes in Detroit because that city had become so bombed-out by riots, police and fire-fighter induced ARSON, growing drug-gang terrorism of the general population there and factories moving out of that part of Michigan, and IndianaCon)
Wow, I really didn't know that about him, and I grew up in Michigan. I recently read Stevie Wonder's mother's book, and she talked about how Gordy would go out of his way not to put his artist on album covers. Like an Isley Brothers record once had a white couple on it and Smokey Robinson's cover had a cartoon monkey on it.
@clenten. on this particular point, Gordy was just following a industry-wide concern that if you put a black face on the albums st the time, whole swaths of so-called "cross-over" whites wouldn't buy it. I myself don't understand this insanity as it stood then.White youth were wildly starved for our music, which we created virtually every form(19th.-century "Country\Cowboy" Blues, Rag-Time, Blues proper, Jazz, Rock 'n' Roll(stolen by whites), Soul\R&B, Funk, "70s disco Revival, Rap\Hip-Hop(Con)
@Atomank68 i understand it, because in the 50s and 60s people probably bought albums not knowing what the artist looked like. i'm not sure when all the variety shows that let singers perform started up. i read whites really weren't introduced to stevie wonder until he toured with the rolling stones in 72
@clenten. (Con)...And don't forget Raggae, Salsa, etc. from our ppls to the south.
Back to the main topic. Nonetheless, there were other record co. that did put their black artists' faces on the covers. Like, can you imagine selling records without Louis Armstrong, Nat "KIng" Cole, pretty Johhny Nathis, Jackie Wilson, Chuck Berry, "Little" Richard Pennyman, Frankie Lyman and the Tennagers (got all the gals' panties hot!) mugs on the cover? Yes, criminal. Berry didn't understand (Cont'd)
@cleten. (Cont'd)... Berry Gordy also didn't understand the women's market, much less the "rebellious" white teens of the 50s and 60s.(and kid, please don't interrupt while poppa's on a role, okay)? White racists did indeed know that "NIGRA MUSIC" was being played by their kids, for the MUSIC WAS REVOLUTIONARY!!! Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, etc. were all accused of singing "jungle music"-ROCK 'N' ROLL, baby!!!
Gordy was just afraid that his fledgling co. would fold with rejection. There is(Cont'd)
I love this compilation of 45 jackets! Great idea. I enjoy looking at all the old picures, reminding me of how life used to be. Just makes me sad knowing that there is no more Jackson Five.
They should've reworked this song for Victory(after Thriller) and waited to release "Can You Feel It" after the video revolution(same period)! Imagine the possibilities!
