  • That Burnside took this bridge at all is the mark of genius and a condemnation of the Confederates for not destroying it.

  • Yeah Burnside might have had a couple of big defeats during the war like Fredericksburg and the Battle of the Crater. But if there's one thing the critics can't touch is this. Burnside's defence of the bridge at Antietam remains his crowning achievement.

  • I walked it too, back in 1998. The Big tree still lives on the "union" side as it did in 1862. If you check old photos, he was just a 10 sapling, but survived all the mayhem.
