Is he playing a standard or is he just jamming? To me it sounds like he does a chord-melody of a standard and improvises a bit on it. Am I rigth and does anyone know which standard he plays?
@Raasmuss He's playing what sounds like "Stella by Starlight" but not strongly elucidating the melody (at least to the point I have heard while typing this).
It baffles me that people think there is a specific type of guitar for jazz. I showed to a gig with a Les Paul once and another guitarist called it a "rock" guitar. Barney Kessel recorded with a Tele. Ed Bickert, Ted Greene, Mike Stern, & Bill Frisell, used them as well. Clint Strong and Pat Martino used a Les Paul. Just about the best "Jazz" tone I've ever had was on a standard tele.
@djangoph1le I totally agree with what you say here. Many (especially younger) musicians do not know that the Les Paul was originally created to play Jazz .I also love the warm ,woody, jazzy tone that can be obtained from using the neck pickup on a Strat ,especially if it has a rosewood fretboard.
I knew that couldn't be a stock Tele nick pickup. I love my Tele but the neck pickup sucks, and one of these days I'm replacing it with something that actually produces a tone, instead of just humming meekly in the background.
You should check out my web site for killer relic telecasters and stratocasters...they are the best relic tele's in existense! But don't take my word for it...go to the review section and see what everyone from Vince Gill, Johnny Hiland, Robben Ford to Keith Urban have to say about them! Thanks folks.
@edgluhrs Ed Bickert is one of my favourites, and it also helps that he comes from my hometown. I think he is one of the most underrated guitar players of his era, and his tone and technique have greatly inspired my playing.
If you've ever played a real tele (the modern ones fender is putting out are wired nothing like the earlier models) then you will truly appreciate what a tele bridge pickup should sound like. Twangy, bright, but not "stab your ears out with an ice pick"
neck. only the neck could make a warm, fat, full tone like that. the bridge pickup wouldn't make a tone like that because it's in the area where the string vibration is small and thin
@danitz56 yup. but a lot of guys play with the neck pickup on but the play the strings right next to the bridge. john scofield would be a great example of this, and it makes for a unique "fat/tight" tone that for some reason a TON of players are doing this.
I found this video on a homepage of a Scandinavian (I think it was Swedish) amp manufacturer, but I have forgotten its name and cannot therefore tell who is playing. The clip was made to advertise the amp the guitarist is playing with. I would be glad if someone could find out the answers to the questions. Anybody familiar with Scandinavian jazz scene?

@karl149149 It's hard to make out from the video but my guess would be that it was a Dutch amp manufacturer called Hook amps and the tele is probably a tele from the dutch brand 'Haar' guitars, I could be wrong though. nice vid, thanks for sharing.

I play jazz gigs with a tele all the time. I don't worry about being heard, damage to the guitar, or theft. Also, i'm playing a guitar made by
'Tradition,' made in Korea, but set up in Ft.Worth, TX. Excellent value.
At home, i seldom plug in. I play my archtop on the couch.

Hola, tengo varias guitarras. La 52 es una de ellas, pero le he puesto una pastilla Duesemberg y ahora si te puedo decir que tiene el sabor vintage.
¿Que amplificador usas?
¿Donde puedo conseguir una Levin 315 N/M2?
Ánimo.

How about Mike Stern? He picks really close to the bridge too, plus he just happens to use a tele, along with his Tele-style signature Yamaha guitar.
