Michael Jordan was the greatest alive in the NBA only for the fact that Ric Flair, the truer sportsman, didn't put a jersey on & go out onto the court with him. wwoooOOOOOooo
The Rock?? Give me a break. He was good on the mic, but isn't even in the top five. Flair is of course #1, but Dusty, Jake Roberts, Arn Anderson, Roddy Piper, and Gino Hernandez were all legends on the stick. The Rock, Steve Austin, guys like that were good, but not great.
I love all these comments comparing the Rock to Dusty and Flair. The Rock couldn't draw a dime without the WWE machine shoving him down peoples throats, while he steals others catchphrases. The People's Champion? I don't think so...WOOOOO
Also Rock recently came back and so effortlessly destroys Cena on the mic like he never left. Cena is no slouch on the mic either but Rock owns him every time. In his hey day, Rock would have buried Cena on the mic back in 98-99 (a lot of shit is held back now a days...).
I have never really liked dusty in the ring or on the mic. It's to understand what he's saying even half the time if you can understand him, half his promos never made any sense. Flair was probably one of the best ever on the mic, hands down. His only real short coming was that his career lasted about 10 years longer than it should have.
@J5MARLON Yes, Michael Jordan is the greatest Basketball Player of all-time but Ric Flair is not only the greatest Pro Wrestler ever, he is also one of the best all-around athletes AND entertainers the World has ever seen.
@MetalheadJay78 Not just that he is one of few Americans non journalist that was in North Korea when he wrestled Antonio Inoki. Yeah youtube that no seriously its on youtube.
No one did it on the mic like Naitch. Ric Flair flossy, Ric Flair's "Golden Spoon"...etc. No one can do it better...and that was ALL AD-LIB. The Rock's era was scripted...no knock on Dwayne, but Flair was the pioneer for that kind of mic swag.
I think as overall wrestlers, I'd give the edge to Flair mainly due to Flair's impact on wrestling and the Rock lacking longevity in the business. Guys I'd rank above Flair (overall) would be Austin, Hart, Michaels and Hogan.
@stacksondeck34 In terms of their skills on the mic? The Rock is good, but give me that Nature Boy Swag over eight funny catch phrases. The rest of them can't see Ric Flair on the mic
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@tjhunt1976 solely based on skills on the mic, The Rock is better than Flair. I'm not seeing that as arguable. Flair could never control a crowd like the Rock did. You could literally feel the electricity when the Rock was cutting a promo plus his trash-talking his second-to-none. Perhaps Austin but that's arguable. I judge mic skills based not only on my opinion but also how much of a reaction they can draw. Also, I think Jake the Snake (tremendous heel) and Piper deserve mentions as well.
@stacksondeck34 Don't get me wrong. The Rock is one of my all-time favorites. But his shtick is catchphrases. He just changed the wording to fit each situation. Can you smell what TJ is cookin'? But Ric Flair was a personality. From the minute you heard that intro song and he walked down that aisle stylin' and profilin' with 2 gorgeous ladies on his arms, you knew this guy had substance. He was more than funny catchphrases. Ric Flair is the GOAT wrestling personality. No doubt!
@tjhunt1976 I see your point although I feel you're underrating the Rock's creativity and charisma. He always adjusted his promos depending on who he was feuding with. I think the thing with me is that I didn't watch Flair in the NWA or the late 80s with WCW. First time I saw him was with the WWF in the early 90s and he was really over as a heel at that time but he didn't stand out like the Rock did. The Rock, albeit for a short time, was like the MJ of wrestling. He was the GUY in the company.
@stacksondeck34 Oh man, you missed it. Ric Flair was the MAN in WCW during the 80's. He carried that company while the youngin's (Sting, Luger, Steamboat, Muta, etc) all came and went. The reaction wasn't the same as what the Rock gets mostly because wrestling changed. In the 80's, it was still trying to act like a sport and it had die-hard fans as a result. WWF changed the culture and made it more about the entertainment side. More promos, much less actual wrestling. Different fan base.
@tjhunt1976 The Rock is humorous on the mic but Flair could display any emotion and was more believable than anyone. Flair could just speak seriously without any catchphrases and you would want to listen to him. There is a reason why The Rock and the greatest wrestlers of the last 25 years consider Flair to be the best and most influential. Flair was the best at everything. And his passion and desire can't be beat either.
@stacksondeck34@tjhunt1976 - They both had soul. That's what made them so different. Dusty included. The true testament to Flair is that the man could wrestle. The Rock, will decent in the ring, was mostly an entertainment. Flair was the total package.
The Rock was much more than catch phrases. Rock from 97-99 was more mellow, more methodical on the mic. I've never seen anyone like him on the mic before. He used to DESTROY people on the mic (HHH, Austin, Mankind, Undertaker etc...)Then I agree it became more about catch phrases and shit after like late '99. However his catch phrases are pop culture phenomena. The word Smack down became a TV show and a video game franchise. Rock is the best ever on the mic, imo.
@stacksondeck34 The Rock had writers like Vince Russo and rehearsed for all of his promos... Ric Flair came up with his stuff off the top of his head.
Sorry, Rock isn't on the same level as Flair and Dusty. If you don't think Flair couldn't control a crowd, you haven't seen enough of Ric Flair and the same holds true for Dream. More importantly, they could talk people into spending money to come see them every night around the country and did it for decades.
@stacksondeck34 I disagree...Flair was better....mainly because back in the 80s the crowds were not nearly as big as is now...And Flair was mainly a rulebreaker in his prime...So he didn't HAVE to control a crowd...The Rock was mainly a fan favorite (although he was a great hollywood heel)..Nothing was better than a four horsemen promo...AND (not taking anything from the Rock..i love him) but he basically said the SAME THINGS over and over.
@dreman1970 80's crowd not big? Do you not realize that WCCW was putting 70,000 people in Texas Stadium? If anything the crowds now are small and lame compared to the 80's. The crowds today need a sign to tell them when to get excited.
@BayouCityHtown Ok that was WCCW....In ONE arena....I was talking about the weekly shows like world championship wrestling that was in a studio (although they were great shows) in comparison to Nitro, RAW, Superstars where the crowds were a lot bigger on a weekly basis...I agree the crowd are much lamer now....
@dreman1970 Oh, I see what you are saying, I agree. To tell the truth I thought you were just bashing the 80's. I happen to love the wrestling of the 80's and 90's. I mainly go to Indy shows now. Neither WWE or TNA inspire me to spend money on their shows.
@BayouCityHtown HELL NO!!! The 80s was the best era..The NWA was the shit!!! Especially when it had all it's regional stuff (like wccw)...STILL the greatest match I ever saw was Magnum TA vs Tully Blanchard I quit match for the US title at starrcade 85 (I think)....
@dreman1970 Good, glad to see people still remember. I'm not the type who bashes different era's, although today's product concerns me at times. I just try to enjoy what's in front of me at the moment. I can be watching what I know is the worst match I have ever seen at some Indy promotion but still try to take something positive from it. It's hard to do at times but I try.

@23jordanAIRwalker I'm not the one screaming with full caps on. "BEST EVR"? And I'm the one who's the young kid? Grab a clue or you might just have to buy one.
@stacksondeck34 Funny you say that because Austin, The Rock, and Shawn Michaels will tell you that Flair is the greatest ever. I think them and wrestling historians(which I am) know obviously more than you do. Perhaps, you should study up on your Pro Wrestling history and learn what makes people great in the business. Passion and believability along with mic skills, psychology, charisma, and wrestling skill is why Flair is the greatest. He was the best at everything.
