  • @salaber

    yep, never realized it before

  • Did anyone else find a similarity between this and Blind Boy Fuller's "If you don't give me what I want" ? I thought the white stripes had done a kind of remake of this song before I learned it was a Blind Willie McTell song

  • "Well, I took 'at butcher knife and held up to 'er throat an' I says, 'If you wanna live to see tomorra' you better start frien' them eggs a little bit better'n what you been frien' em! I'm tarred a'eatin' sloppy, slimy eggs!"

  • @PennyRoyal369 Jesco White, the "Dancing Outlaw", (born July 30, 1956) ..... country is the white man´s blues ;)

  • Heard this in a tattoo parlor today. I fell in love immediately.

  • this is uneartly! I LOVE THIS MUSIC and how this man plays and sings! thank you for uploading this treasure, have a good life everyone listening this!!!! ;)

  • gotta keep your old timey pimp hand strong.

  • the white stripes did a good cover of this.. but Jack White has nothing on this!

  • cool voice cool guitar

  • The song isn't really about "wife beating" it's about the violence blacks faced from whites in the Jim Crow south. In essence it's a protest song in disguise. Black singers couldn't sing about the abuse they faced from whites without getting arrested or more likely beaten and lynched so they covered the meanings in songs.

It was common for the white man or society to be the "man" in the song because of the powerful position in the relationship. Your southern can is mine = Yer black ass is mine

  • @awander76 I don't think this song has any anti racism undertones. It is what it is.

  • This is one of the best songs about spousal abuse that I have ever heard.

  • il me semble (mais je n'affirme rien) que certain morceaux de se véritable artiste son parmis les enregistrements qui ont été mis dans la capsule spatiale destiné à etre -peut etre- trouvée par des extra terrestres.

  • I can really see why Jack White chose to cover this song. Although their voices are very different, the vocal styling is very similar. Ahead of his time, I think.

  • 1st time hearing Willie's music for me here(3rd or 4th song so far) ... & I gotta say, he's already hands down at the top of my all time iconic favorite blues/ rag cat list. How the heck did he get so good w/ so little to learn from? Those old geetarz had that "bow & arrow action too", .... & plus it's 12 string. One really can't overstate enough positive things about this man. Completely blown away, what else can I say?

  • He had an amazing voice.

  • check out the white stripes version!

  • Blind McTell played sassy ragtime, yep indeed.

  • those were the days

  • southern can = vagina

  • georgia has put out some fine musicians but by far mr willie mctell especially his cut you were born to die

  • i wish that there was film of willie, love that voice

  • Wow, if you take the time to listen to these lyrics word for word... This song is DIRTY! talkin bout her can wont see no rest. lol

  • wow, came across this by accident. Blown away instantly

  • this is epic!

he has a nice voice, catchy somehow

  • Found my way here via the White Stripes cover. This version is awesome. Love that guitar playing.

  • @RichandAbi well there arent really too many versions of it. pretty much mctell wrote it around the late 20's and since then i think the only one to cover it is the white stripes.

  • hahaha heard this from a girl i met busking on banjo

  • Ah wife beating never sounded so good :-)

  • iF YOU LIKE THIS, YOU'LL LIKE ME! I'M A 2010 ACOUSTIC BLUES ARTIST, 1930 STYLE. i WANT TO bring back this forgotten style with NEW songs! I will upload first introduction soon! I'm asking for your support by subscribing! Thanks so much!

    seth edward

  • I heard this song first time when i bought De Stijl some years ago. Later i discovered that Blind Willie McTell wrote the song. So i went out and bought a few vinyls with him. I've listened to them over and over again!

  • "Nobody can sing the blues like blind willie Mctell"

  • Is there a tutorial to learn this song, specifically?

  • "Now listen here mama let me tell you this, if you wants to get crooked I'm gonna give you my fists."

I don't really agree with his way of handling things, but it still sounds badass... :)

  • this man is a god,good lord.

  • YES! Beating WOMEN! Just joking... different times... I love this song.

  • @nickothompson LMAO!!!

  • No one sings the blues like Blind Willie Mctell

  • This sounds amazingly modern. Can't believe song is almost eighty years old.

  • i like this guy as much as leadbelly! he's fucking great.

  • a truely awesome.

  • Willie was a great singer and a blues legend.

  • Question, what is meant by Southern Can.....sounds very.....suggestive.

  • @IBG67 The ass of a southern girl

  • This sounds just like Robert Johnson's 'They're Red Hot'.

  • Nearly all Blind Willie's are good. " all the tracks off 1940 Sessions are outstanding .. "Just as Well To Get Ready you got to Die", "King Edward Blues"

  • first time i've ever heard the guy. wasn't expecting a voice like this. clear and happy. awesome stuff. thank you for the post.

  • He does the definitive version Statesboro Blues zez.

  • I have this song in my blues collection. I thought of it as ragtime/blues. Just blues. But it is ragtime. Dude thanks

  • My brother was playing this song on guitar when he introduced it to me and I think it's just amazing! Can anyone else show me more songs by this guy that are as good as this one?

  • yes,

    " Travelin' Blues ",

    " Dying Crapshooters Bleues "

    " Razor Ball "

    " Broke Down Engine" ,

    so much !

  • @RagtimeDorianHenry I really like Dying Crapshooters Blues and Can't get Stuff No More.

  • @RagtimeDorianHenry Razor ball is one of my favs... this stuff can't be touched

  • I don't know why someone would suggest those songs for someone who likes this style but, whatever. I have heard everything there is to hear by this man and will contend that you start with the 1940 recordings of McTell for the Library of Congress. Hope this does it for you.

  • well, wouldn't it be a shame for zezimaowner123 not to hear everything there is to hear by this man too?

  • @zezimaowner123

He does a sublime rendition of "Wabash Cannonball"

  • @zezimaowner123 to be honest i can only think of 1 song out of all of his recordings that i didnt like, and it was because the girl singing with him was too loud and it peaked like a bastard. listen to everything you can find of him, honestly!

    some suggestions:

Atlanta Rag, Searching The Desert For The Blues, Lonesome Day Blues, and I've Got To Cross The River Of Jordan.. if you can find it Kill It Kid from his 1940 recording session is another great one.

  • @zezimaowner123 -- "Statesboro Blues" has always been his flagship song to me

  • @zezimaowner123 georgia rag

  • @zezimaowner123 check out some playlists just look out you'll find much here on youtube dear friend :)

  • @zezimaowner123 statesboro blues and dark night blues are pretty good songs

  • @zezimaowner123

"Statesboro Blues" is one of his flagships for sure

  • @zezimaowner123 see crapshooter blues, similar n' just as good. peace

  • @zezimaowner123

    Check out:

    Savanah Mama

Searching the Desert for the Blues

    Death Cell Blues

We Got to Meet Death Someday

    Pal of Mine

Shit, I could on and on, it's ALL good!

  • @zezimaowner123 send me an angel

  • greatest singer/guitarist of all time (with the possible exception of Led Belly or Tommy Johnson). That voice, those fingers. NO ONE CAN PLAY LIKE THIS ANYMORE. especcially on a twelve string acoustic. You need hand endurance that eclipses every strain of metal to make those steel strings dance like this. Yngwie Malmsteen has nothing on Blind Willie Mctell

  • Well, some people CAN...

  • Well, neither Leadbelly or Tommy Johnson can actually touch Blind Willie McTell.

  • Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, Rev. Gary Davis

  • Yeah, for example.

  • For guitar playing at least.

  • @spitblueblood jack white did this song justice

  • @spitblueblood

Gotta believe Robert Johnson would top that list

  • Spank it a little bit boy!

  • Whoever has given the thumbs down to the person who posted about the white stripes, there's a word for people like you - snob.

I hope your life remains as pathetic as it must already be.

  • This might be the earliest recording ever where someone says "I got that hoe." :-p

  • i was born 100 years too late.

  • The White Stripes version of this song is based on the "Southern Can Mama" recording, not this one, for any candy cane kids out there.

  • Thankyou

  • Don't get crooked, now... ;-)

  • What is he saying at 2:52? sounds kinda dirty. LOL XD

  • Rofl.

    I just noticed that.

  • I could listen to this guy all day

  • the blues is awesome

    blind willie mctell is awesome

fuck i just love the blues!!!

  • This is not really blues, its ragtime. Blind Willie really was multi dimentional. "southern can"? pretty risque lyrics for the day. LOL

  • yeah ragtime, but still this kids got the blues :P

  • seems like blind Willie could do it all

  • merci pour ce doux morceau, thx for this nice song

  • derien mon ami !

  • as for accurate tab it starts in c then a7 d7 g7 c you got to put your own feeling into it just as willie did happy picking jd

  • Give it to meee I must have it.

  • i love old blues its so good and way to under-rated for what it is but im gald there is some people comin to listen to it

  • beautiful! thanks for adding this great jam ragtime!

  • hell yeah!! he just said your ass is mine, i'll hit that bitch with a brick, and people are like whoohoo!!... yall are fucked up

  • Don't worry, he couldn't do much damage being blind and all.

  • Was he actually blind?

  • Yeah he was born blind in one and lost his vision completely by late childhood. He used sonar (mouth clicks and echos) to navigate the world and he could even tell the denomination of paper currency by Feel ALONE! and play some bad ass guitar to boot. An amazing man and musician.

  • very good answer KRZeppelin!

  • thats great man

  • does anybody know where to get this on tab? the white stripes version is everywhere but its wrong! jack cant do the bass bit.

  • its pretty similar for the most part, if you play around with the white stripes version a bit and experiment with the walking until it sounds right, you can make it sound more like the original. thats what i did. =]

  • Wonderful, Mctell had it for sure. That Southern Can is Mine mama! You know it is, Im not dreaming baby, saying every bit of it.

  • yes it's a very cool song ,

    his voice is so sweet
