Did anyone else find a similarity between this and Blind Boy Fuller's "If you don't give me what I want" ? I thought the white stripes had done a kind of remake of this song before I learned it was a Blind Willie McTell song

this is uneartly! I LOVE THIS MUSIC and how this man plays and sings! thank you for uploading this treasure, have a good life everyone listening this!!!! ;)
The song isn't really about "wife beating" it's about the violence blacks faced from whites in the Jim Crow south. In essence it's a protest song in disguise. Black singers couldn't sing about the abuse they faced from whites without getting arrested or more likely beaten and lynched so they covered the meanings in songs.
It was common for the white man or society to be the "man" in the song because of the powerful position in the relationship. Your southern can is mine = Yer black ass is mine
il me semble (mais je n'affirme rien) que certain morceaux de se véritable artiste son parmis les enregistrements qui ont été mis dans la capsule spatiale destiné à etre -peut etre- trouvée par des extra terrestres.
I can really see why Jack White chose to cover this song. Although their voices are very different, the vocal styling is very similar. Ahead of his time, I think.
1st time hearing Willie's music for me here(3rd or 4th song so far) ... & I gotta say, he's already hands down at the top of my all time iconic favorite blues/ rag cat list. How the heck did he get so good w/ so little to learn from? Those old geetarz had that "bow & arrow action too", .... & plus it's 12 string. One really can't overstate enough positive things about this man. Completely blown away, what else can I say?
MY FIRST SONG IS UPLOADED! I'm a new acoustic blues artist. Please go listen and if you like it, please pass it on and subscribe! Thanks, there's more to come!
@RichandAbi well there arent really too many versions of it. pretty much mctell wrote it around the late 20's and since then i think the only one to cover it is the white stripes.

I heard this song first time when i bought De Stijl some years ago. Later i discovered that Blind Willie McTell wrote the song. So i went out and bought a few vinyls with him. I've listened to them over and over again!
Nearly all Blind Willie's are good. " all the tracks off 1940 Sessions are outstanding .. "Just as Well To Get Ready you got to Die", "King Edward Blues"
My brother was playing this song on guitar when he introduced it to me and I think it's just amazing! Can anyone else show me more songs by this guy that are as good as this one?
I don't know why someone would suggest those songs for someone who likes this style but, whatever. I have heard everything there is to hear by this man and will contend that you start with the 1940 recordings of McTell for the Library of Congress. Hope this does it for you.
@zezimaowner123 to be honest i can only think of 1 song out of all of his recordings that i didnt like, and it was because the girl singing with him was too loud and it peaked like a bastard. listen to everything you can find of him, honestly!
some suggestions:
Atlanta Rag, Searching The Desert For The Blues, Lonesome Day Blues, and I've Got To Cross The River Of Jordan.. if you can find it Kill It Kid from his 1940 recording session is another great one.
greatest singer/guitarist of all time (with the possible exception of Led Belly or Tommy Johnson). That voice, those fingers. NO ONE CAN PLAY LIKE THIS ANYMORE. especcially on a twelve string acoustic. You need hand endurance that eclipses every strain of metal to make those steel strings dance like this. Yngwie Malmsteen has nothing on Blind Willie Mctell
Yeah he was born blind in one and lost his vision completely by late childhood. He used sonar (mouth clicks and echos) to navigate the world and he could even tell the denomination of paper currency by Feel ALONE! and play some bad ass guitar to boot. An amazing man and musician.
its pretty similar for the most part, if you play around with the white stripes version a bit and experiment with the walking until it sounds right, you can make it sound more like the original. thats what i did. =]
