  • After lots of agonizing over virtualisation options, I think virtualbox is the one i'm going to go with. One of the big factors for me is there is a FreeBSD version in the works. I'd use esxi but I want to use the machine for a desktop too. I'm running virtualbox on Opensolaris and have one account that launches straight into a fullscreen windows vm when logging in and logs out when the vm shuts down. Works from my custom X terminal too, it's almost like XDM'ing into windows.

  • All I want to know is if I can play free mmorpg games on it?

  • do you realy need to register

  • Virtual Box rules

  • Copy / Paste used to work in earlier versions, and STILL works in version 2.2.0.

I just tested it now (Vista x64 Host, Ubuntu 8.10 guest). I copied successfully both ways using Notepad++ on the Windows side, and GEdit on the Linux side. I also tested successfully with Emacs on both sides (using the *Icons in the tool bar*, M-w and C-y did NOT work).

  • just a minor correction - it is possible to clone a virtual machine from the command line:

    VBoxManage clonevdi /media/disk/VirtualBox/WinXP_Back.vdi /media/disk/VirtualBox/WXP1.vdi

  • About 'cloning' VirtualBox makes it fairly easy to export/import your virtual machines as Appliances.

I found that quite handy when testing different setups.

Sure still not as comfortable as vmware, but it gets the job done.

  • So to get this straight, if I want to run a openGL game for Windows under OSX, I can just get virtualbox and have it run propper 3rd acceleration?

  • On my Ubuntu box it will not let me update (it says that i am up to date with 2.1.4) and I cannot install over it or get it to uninstall. Do you have any suggestions?

  • Direct download from sun, they have a package and it will run the package manager automatically for it.

Repositories haven't been updated to include it yet.

  • I had already tried that but it won't work. It opens the Package Installer and comes up with the error "Error: Conflicts with the installed package 'virtualbox-2.1'"

    any ideas?

  • remove VB 2.1, make sure to save your VMs first.

  • Virtualbox is great, been using it for a long time and it does everything i want perfectly

  • Good and interesting video.

You guys have to learn not to talk over each other.

Love these videos, keep it up!! :D

  • tanks

  • Note that there is a typo in the title for this video. :-)

  • no there isnt

  • totally agree with lack of copy/paste and drag drop! haha ur still talking all over each other... bit annoying and chaotic... you should take your speaking in turn! right? :p also, i tried bridge networking mode on opensuse 11.1 64-bit and had no luck (came up with an error when i start the vm) googled this and it seems to be a very common issue... oops!

  • Can't say I've experienced the same problem here. Running openSuSE 11.1 Vbox 2.2 (Closed Source Version) on Windows Vista Ultimate (GAG I know but I'm in school and they won't let me not use windows ware)

  • lol a downvote; someone's either not a fan of software bugs being public, or, not a fan of "in depth look" critique (i'm only trying to make the show better, seen as i'm a subscriber)... oh well, maybe i have an ankle biter :) - anyway, @bowenit, i'm glad someone has at least had luck with virtual box, but because of the bridge issue i've had to stick with vmware (for now!)

  • I don't know who your chiwawa is but I know it's not me.

  • what I would like to see in virtual box is mounting of growing hard disks and local usb support in the OSE version

  • changing the id of a vdi hardisk file:

    VBoxManage internalcommands setvdiuuid disk.vdi

  • VirtualBox >> Windows VirtualPC

And those are the only free ones.

So VirtualBox is a winner for me.

  • For windows users ofc.

  • Virtual PC doesn't hold a candle stick to Virtual Box, I have used both. Also Virtual Box is by far a ton easier to use than VM Ware.

  • Guys, you can forward ports to a VM through the VBox NAT router, also, you can give vbox a raw disk partition

  • Very well done! Sure shot. The weakspot is backing up a Virtual (Guest) Machine and take that along. I run (a legal) XP SP3 on Ubuntu 8.10 and can't backup, clone or whatever XP-virtual and reinstall and use it on another PC on our network. I am not talking about related (c) issues, but about the possibility. It isn't working in VBox.

  • VMware has some patents on cloning snapshots and whatnot
