i was born in thunderbay lake superior was always in veiw, my grandpa god rest his soul would tell me tales of happenings and people he once knew that it had taken
As a child living in Lorain, Ohio I used to sit on the sandstone seats built into the Charles Berry Bridge bascule bridge over the black river. Many times the Edmund Fitzgerald was tied to the side of the river bank behind me. I would just sit there a look at that ship. Her name always caught me eye because of John Kennedys middle name. I know that I saw most all of her crew at various times of the month and years between 1963 1970 Im proud to have laid eyes on her so many times.
Great song, kind of sad though, one, because 29 men died, two, my sisters boyfriend and his family of four do fishin like this(although smaller boat) up in alaska. it gets pretty intense. lets just keep all of these brave fishermen in our prayers. pretty dangerous job.
nice video clips. nice try at the song--but lightfoot is the only one who can pull it off. the lilt in the voice, the passion behind it. no one will ever come close to the original
The Fitz was the last of the big lakers to sink. The last one before her was the SS Daniel J Morrel which sunk on November 29, 1966 taking the lives of 28 of it's 29 crew. There was one survivor who wrote a book about his ordeal.
Ships are still sinking all over the world, but most of the crews are from the 3rd world, so we don't here bout them.
I was crew on-board (many years afterwards) a ship that searched for the Fritz that night, the SS Wilfred Sykes.
The Lakes are great. But I sailed as a relief and several times in November and December. I felt that the Lakes in December were even worse than Alaska, but maybe that's just me. At one point I was working on deck at about 3am and I could only stay outside for 5 mins max, it was that cold. That was Chirstmas day. Colder than I thought I could ever feel.
Dean, I love Gordon Lightfoot and we just don't hear enough of his music nowadays ... this song was one of my faves of his. Lovely cover my friend... nice job on your keyboard... very nice!

This is a terrible tragity. All hands were lost. God save and protect the rest of the sailors who sail the waters in November...
