This song sounds like something from Mass Effect because it's from the same group that did the song for the Mass Effect 2 trailer. They are called "Two Steps From Hell." There's a lot of their work on YouTube. You can't buy it commercially though, they don't release albums. Their music is made specifically to license out for trailers/films/etc.

The guy that created star trek music was inspired from hans zimmer, the guy who composed dark knight soundtrack (and many many many more such as Blackhawk Down). Thats why you may find it similar.

Its star trek in name and the universe in this movie is almost exactly the same as that in the series.

Perhaps alot of things are different, but all those differences are derived from the incident of the romulans coming back from the future, so its not implausible. Its not like they've just changed it for no reason.

it is not supposed to mimic the traditional and already masterful series. it is meant to remake it. To find a new path in the universe of star trek and to find where it leads.

All the most important elements of star trek are in this movie. Just because it focuses on action, it doesn't mean it misses the core star trek characteristics.

Do you also call DS9 and the war not Trek since it flies in the face of Roddenberry's vision of a Utopian society? Look back at TNG when Starfleet was overrun with an alien force in the episode "Conspiracy". They originally wanted Starfleet officers to be the reason of the coup on Earth, but Roddenberry said no so they wrote it as aliens. If it's hard for you to accept new actors in familiar roles, that's one thing, but to say it's not Star Trek is something entirely different.
