Or you could just go to ubuntu.com and find the link to the universal usb installer, from there you can download the iso image, format your flash drive, and make it bootable.
Because i think my computer is like 5+ years old and previously i never noticed there is any option of booting through usb drive, and i only had hdd to boot as my dvdrom is a gone case. Should i just give it a try? or is there any option of re-setting my bios to boot from usb?
2. How do i mirror image my boot file in hdd which was factory set? Im using a dell inspiron 640m
Nowadays if you want to make a bootable USB flash drive, all you have to do is boot from an Ubuntu Live CD, go into System>Administration>USB Startup Disk Creator. It's that simple.
Ya on Windows, get the Ubuntu Netbook Remix, then burn it to a disc, and run it, make sure you have a 1GB (or more) flash drive, then make sure its FAT32, then explore the disc and choose "usb-creator" Done!
You know the step on 3:44 , my computer didn't show all that stuff after you typed the command. How could I start again without any partitions on my flash drive, and all the space I had.
if i set usb drive as the first boot option and its not plugged in will it then go off the hard drive? also would it matter if my mouse plugs in to the usb?
Wow. Classic example of why Ubuntu is NOT for people. There is absolutely no excuse for there not being an application to do this on the Ubuntu site. (or anywhere for that matter)
I can see there not being one for the commercial systems, since once I have it on a stick, how hard would it be to pass out billions of them, but with an open OS?
Come on. USB install, and USB persistent live boot should be standard. CDs=Diskettes
This is like having a mini hard drive in your pocket. You will be able to add programs store music, photos and video depending on the size of your flash drive.I use mine to use on other peoples computers you can go into their hard drive and see what they have and even transfer files,music,ect..great to have.
..first i already throw away my ubunto linux so complicated program i dont know why they invented it..not a user friendly.. and 1 more maybe much better if u put an automatic run program in the usb flash drive but not ubunto..if possible winXP :)
you can get lite version of xp for around 600MB, thing is this is just very basic XP, i dont have any pictures and it dont even have paint... useful for servers and downloading stuff but apart from that its kinda crappy
What is the hd section? Hard Drive? I saw something about USB there, but didn't think it had anything to do with boot order. By the way, I have BIOS version A3 on a Dell Dimension 2400.
A while back, I bought a USB flash drive with a fingerprint scanner on it. The unit came with a boot CD for computers that dont support booting from the USB device. There must be a boot CD available somewhere that would be compatible with this setup. I want to try the ubuntu, but am too busy right now.

So suppose if I have an 8 GB usb drive, could I put in atleast another six different distros onto that one drive ?
rosenjake716 2 years ago
Who wants that many command lines. Needs to be simpler. Linux won't be mainstream on the desktop anytime soon.

cadefulp 2 years ago
Oh yeah too, why cant i just use Windows to reformat the Usb Pendrive?
cadefulp 2 years ago
Technically you can but windows doesnt have the necessary tools to format the drive with the right settings and partition table

its better because you can boot ubuntu on any computer via a flash drive THAT IS SMALL , FITTING IN YOUR POCKET and a Cd is LARGER

outta of curiosity does anyone know if the usb drive is marked by the asterisk (*) symbol. I know seems like a new question I know
slammer8731 3 years ago
Warning people as in the message.
If you have a never seriala ATA disk then your main HDD is normally /dev/sda and be really carefull to not wipe your whole disk.
In my case the USB drive is /dev/sdb
The fdisk -l is a very usefull command to find out just that.
Cheers
