I dont think a lot of people understand how difficult it is to control an instrument like her voice. Even with a God-given gift like she has, it takes decades and decades to truly master it. People forget, Patti didnt always give you the vocal acrobatics. And I can think of a lot of songs, where she doesnt sing loud. But during her solo rise, in the late 70's thru the 80's you gotta consider her competition. She had to do something to stand out, hence the power and LOUDNESS.

you guys must remember at the time this was taped..patti had just done the motown special and EVERYONE was clamoring to get her to perform on their shows. she was everywhere and people expected that when she came she left you gasping. it was almost a requirement for her. sing for the gods everywhere u go.

Also songs like Little Girls, Don't Make Your Angel Cry, Come What May, Nightbirds, Danny Boy, If You Ask Me To (mostly no belting), Last Dance, Open Up Your Heart and the list could go on and on. These song are all from the 60's until 90's. There might be one belt here or there but most of these songs I listed she doesn't belt at all. Just seems to me you are only aware of certains songs

I adore Patti but yeah once in a while she gets just a little carried away and it overwhelms the material. For the most part though she is absolutely incredible and untouchable.

Patti has plenty of songs where she doesn't belt one note. Nevertheless, if I had a voice and a very wide range you better believe I'm going to use it. What's so funny to me is that no one ever mentions Mariah getting a hold to a song and always using her whistle register, which is the highest register. People don't mention it because THOSE people like a softer sound. So you seem to be in that group who likes the softer voice. That's MY opinion.
