I used to compete in the same tournaments. In tournaments for Red Dragon Karate, the yelling and screaming is part of competition. It has been for at least 15 years.
While I personally don't agree with yelling while doing your martial arts, it's hard to critisize someone with such amazing control, power, and accuracy.
How was I bashing him? I complimented the shit out of him. He's EXTREMLY tallented with his performances. I just believe that the energy should be internal and brought out of the body through your punches, not your lungs.
you are the moron. Screaming makes people to give more strength to movements. Just try yourself, punch the air and then punch it and scream. If you do it well, you'll feel the difference.
And if you can feel it, imagine what martial artists can do with that.
Hahaaha, I never knew screaming would give me strength. A "kiai" would give focus and power certainly, but "screaming"? What a strange view you have! Maybe you can't tell a kiai from a scream??
I think slow movements doesn't need to be soft, either. I said what I said because of two main reasons, first it actually helps me doing a little "extra" something when I'm practicing kung fu, either exhaling hard or screaming (not that loud ). Also, John Su is here making an exhibition, and i think the judges would like this better than a guy who doesn't even express any emotion.
Sure thing, almost all martial arts use the "kiai" which is an outburst of sound and energy coming from the tanden, in kungfu its the "Dantian", an area beneath the navel. It is a short, explosive, loud burst of sound. This guy is screaming with his lungs, and also doing it at all the irrelevant places.
You sound like you know what you're talking about ;) anyway, looks like screaming is part of the show. Sorry for call you moron, is just that some people laughs at the sight of martial arts because they think it's something like a circus or something like that, and in fact martial arts are pretty fascinating and interesting.
Yes I know who I am criticising, and I think if he also does real Shotokan karate (from the looks of it) he would agree with me that this "AIEEEEEEEOOOOW" kiai was for the benefit of the judges in this particular tournament. I'm sure when he goes to a real karate tournament for Shotokan or whatever he really does, he does not do that crazy and painful kiai.
actually i debate if he's screaming vs pushing energy from his core. If you watch his body closes you can see his core and lower body tense vs his chest and shoulders as with common karate "screamers". Of course only he knows where he is drawing his energy but based on his body its coming from much lower and not solely "lungs"
John Su is great at what he does

He's even screaming when he does a slow tension-block. And its a scream, make no mistake, not a "kiai". Next time, think before you comment.

He teaches Chinese Martial Arts in Coppel Texas. I train Under his Master, Grand Master Johnny Lee.
I believe you are correct in thinking he is drawing his energy from his Dian Ting. But I could be wrong as well.
