However, that does not mean that when you reach a higher level of popularity, you can't play other people's music. Famous DJs usually play their music because that is what got them famous in the first place.

Yeah, Xavier de Rosnay works with ableton on the mac and controls the mixer and stuff. Gaspard uses an MPD24 for putting out drum samples and whatnot

Xavier mixes live sets, chooses song orders, etc. Gaspard doesn't have much at all to do with them, but Gaspard does a lot of studio work like you said.

just because you have a software that matches the beats for you it doesn't mean that you dan't mix anymore.

the most important thing about mixing is and always will be track selection. software doesn't pick tracks for you to play - you do.

for me djaying is an artistic activity not a technical one

yeah i dont mix other ppls music i make my own on logic and then put it in to live 8 im not it to mixing othere ppls music. mixing music is not artistic is just playing other ppls music. and taking credit for it. take a noob to a rave have them watch some one playing live they think that the dj is making the track live like a band or somthing. I tell them no he playing some one esles music and playing them at the same speed. and 80% of the time they laff

I respect that. In fact that's what I want to do. I want to produce my own tracks and then play them live. For me that deserves much more respect than just playing other people's music. But still I find that being a good dj is not that easy. it takes a lot of musical knowledge, good taste and pratice to make a good dj set. that's why some of my favorite producers are also my favorite dj's. take soulwax for instance. they rock when they play live. they rock when they dj.
