How many races did CBS cover F1 other than the ones from 2005-2006 and maybe a bit earlier in the 2000s? But at 0:47 - Ken by the way he said it "final lap of this game."
what>? gilles didn't even have a twin turbo in the race. he was incredible, fearless and had some bad luck and died young. the most raw skills in a driver ever, period
i would have love to been there in the office of the OLD MAN ENZO FERRARI days after the race watching the footage just to see his face and what he might of thought or felt.
David Hobbs and Ken Squier could call any form of racing -- be it NASCAR, IndyCars, Formula 1, CanAm, and know what they're talking about with just the right energy level.
I remember seeing this on CBS Sports Spectacular when Emerson, Lake and Palmer's 'Fanfare For The Common Man' was the theme. Hard to believe CBS SENT Ken Squier and David Hobbs to France to call the race. I think the big reason for that was because Mario Andretti was the defending champion. These days Bob Varsha and David Hobbs are probably watching a monitor calling the F1 races on SPEED.
BTW, this race occurred a few months after the famous fight at the end of the Daytona 500.
Squier and Hobbs were the commentary men for CBS's NASCAR coverage in the 1980s, so I'd imagine that CBS was the broadcaster. Wide World of Sports was on ABC, and Jackie Stewart was their in-house racing personality.
This was the American broadcast of the race on the CBS network. The American voice is that of longtime broadcaster Ken Squier, accompanied by David Hobbs as the driver analyst.
Ken Squier did always have pronunciation problems.

@BloodMagex By that measure, all games are a state of mind and we might as well not specify any competition by terming it a game.

They commentated the race better than Murry, was disappointed at how unenthusiastic Murry's commentary was for this battle
Juihi 4 years ago 7
I agree. Murray was a little lackluster on this one.

This is the broadcast I remember watching in 1979. Was it on the Wide World Of Sports in America?
