Oh my gosh this little thing is sooo cute! I don't care what anyone else says aye-ayes are really adorable in my eyes. Sure it's -partly- because they're a little funny-looking, (you know, so funny it's cute) but they're also cute simply because they're cute, if that makes sense. I also love their mannerisms and the way they use they're specially elongated middle finger (look it up, Animal Planet's show "The Most Extreme" captured a really cute aye-aye moment talking about how they use it)
Aye ayes are one of my favorite animals. I showed a picture of one to some people today and mostly I got the "WHAT IN GOD'S NAME IS THAT UGLY THING?!" while a few of my friends went "Aww... They're so cute!!!". It's extremely sad that they're endangered because they're adorable little things.
So I have personally done some research on this fascinating creature and oddly enough, superstitions are the main killer of this primate. In many cultures, people believe that if an Aye-aye points his second digit at you, it will give you a miserable death. Also, some believe that the Aye-aye use their second digit to pierce the aorta of their unsuspecting human victims, particularly children. Many people of other cultures kill Aye-ayes to bring good luck and prosperity to their family.
While upon first glance the little guy might appear strange, after your eyes settle you start to look at his little imperfections and realize it seems extremely sweet. From all the videos I have seen these guys seem very docile and I can't imagine why anyone would want to harm these sweet creatures.
They certainly seem like it and they also seem to be adorably curious.:)I wonder if their curiosity is something that makes them more vulnerable to being seen, caught, and harmed by people with ridiculous superstitions? I sincerely hope that Aye Ayes are able to rebuild their populations. It's horrible to learn the reasons of their endangered status. Thank you for posting this and hopefully it helps some people realize these little guys are harmless.
Yeah, they are extremely vulnerable and trusting. They'll come down from the tree, poke you in the ear, climb all over you... darling if you're a scientist studying them, quite dangerous otherwise.
Thanx for the tip.Honestly if I had not known that and had the chance to interact with one I most likely wouldn't have passed the chance up.I am extremely vulnerable and trusting myself lol.I should have said "in terms of superstitions they are harmless".That has to be one of the most sad and disturbing causes for these little guys to be endangered from.Sorry to keep quizzing you, but what kind of defenses do they have? Also, could you point me in the direction to where I can donate to help?
what a brilliant lil' lad, this is probably the most fascinating mammal ive ever seen, thanks for uploading, I love the wildlife of madagascar as well as all the animals on our planet, cheers
I do not know how anyone can say a living creature is anything other than amazing - especially one like this. We share the planet with them and we should be proud of that fact - whatever their 'differences' to us...
aye aye's are the most primative primate on earth they are not poisonus and are not lemurs. they are nocturnal primates found in the forests of madagascar and they dont kill their prey by injecting venom into the bloodstreem they eat insects they find in trees
Their not primative at all, they are overly specialized. Look at their foraging behvior and anatomical adaptations of their hands. But you wrong they belong to the Lemuriformes (that include daubentoniids)
the aye aye is my favorite animal. it is a very unusual looking primate. it also has a very strange feature, on its hand it has one twig like finger used to tap on tree branches so it can hear hollow spaces that may contain larva they will pick out and eat. its kinda neat to watch them use it.
Actually, the aye-aye live only on Madagascar and in captivity. They are very endangered and close to extinction: their habitat is threatened by encroaching plantations and also villagers on Madagascar consider them an omen of death and kill them on sight.

These are primitive, superstitious savages who are headhunters and cannibals. I don't put much truck in what they say.
