Back wheel cars are always going to have grip problems in snow. Next time try to use a front wheel drive car. Also drive the same Model not same make.
For the UK, most winters you can simple book a day off work when it snows as the roads are usually clear the day after. I have been using a pair of winter tires only on the front, of my diesel estate, a little dangerous I know but if I drive carfully in wintry conditions the winter tires make the differance between going some where safely and being stuck or sliding into a junction with an ABS assited crash. While socks & chains have there place, I don't think its for the majority of the UK.
put socks because chains socks or winter tyres is much diferent. 1st place is sock, 2nd chain,3rd winter tyres. winter tyres will not help u alot vs hard snow and -10 C its proven. I got winter tyres to, and i can tell u climb to hill u go down< depends how high it is. Snow socks are the best check in you tube Winter wsnow sock or chain. u will see.
It would seem many of you dont have any experience on the road. Because what he is saying and showing makes 100% perfect sense. Summer tyres are useless in snow. Perhaps one car might go slightly farther than another but in the end, you will get stuck.
So first of al lthe presenter says "With these two completely identical BMWs - a 6 series and a 1 series".. Yeah. That's really identical. So this video is called "Do winter tyres work".. and none of the cars in the video have winter tyres. One has all seasons and one has summer tyres. All seasons tyres are nowhere near as good as winter tyres in the snow. Later on he says the car has cold wether tyres which is not true. What a useless test.
Far from scientific test? That's the understatement of the century buddy, tune in next week to see sailor's fall off the end of the earth, people dying when trains reach over 15mph and we do sneak taster to see if the moon really is made of cheese.
stupid bloody prick!!!!!!! 2 very different cars.............. one heavy, automatic and wider tyres the other much lighter, manual and thinner wheels!!!!
stupid bloody gay prick....................."completely identical"?????????????? are you a complete fucking dick head?????
This test shows NOTHING. Two completely different cars compared, where EVERYTHING between them is different. The 1 series is a small (relatively light) car with a 2.0l turbo diesel with 140 bhp and a manual gearbox. The 6 series is a fairly large (HEAVY) car with a 3.0l bi-turbo diesel with 281 bhp and an automatic gearbox. THEN the tyres are different. Also, the woman just seems to give the 6-er a boot-full once the rears are spinning! Stupid test run by stupid people!
@Porrly a 6 series should have more grip. if a 6 can't make it, then a 1 without winter tire cannot make it either. the significance of winter tire is further emphasized, right?
@sqy391 No. The 6 is a heavier car with A LOT more power and wider tyres. It would have considerably LESS grip in snow. It's a stupid, pointless test, proving nothing because there are too many variables.
@Porrly Diesel and petrol dosen't make any different,MT and AT gearbox dosen't make any different as well. winter tyre, FWD or AWD and for more inportantly,it's the one setting behind th wheel.
@zxy1987106 Did I say diesel vs petrol makes a difference?
Of course MT vs AT makes a difference, you can slip the clutch in a manual to take some of the torque away from the driving wheels. In an auto you are relying on the computer to ensure the power is put down and AT doesn't know when it's snowing!
Your last sentence was just gibberish. Try again.
In order to perform a scientific test one needs to change ONE thing between the cars, not EVERYTHING between the 2!
@Porrly You cannot possibly be this thick. He said they are different as the tires. ITs an IMPROMPTU test. Also whats with the specs sheet copy paste genious? It was only a little fresh snow, those things are unimportant, it was only to show how the tyres perform and how much snow they grab to push the car forward. Its doesnt matter what bhp or if an auto. They pushed the 6series, once it had a momentum its shouldve be moving regardless of the tranny. Seriously, you calling THEM stupid. lol.
@kowal789 oh really..... you dont ever push your vehicles to their limits do you? A good tread pattern and rubber compound will really shine ONCE tire slippage begins. For example a snow tire like we use in North America will fling snow out of the big channels of the tire and actually end up w/ snow & ice packed into the smaller slits which gives more bite. Once you loose traction in a turn tires can make a difference also - on wet, dry and snow different tires will give you more or less control
@mustang633NY true, but on ice snow tires dont to anything unless you have studds. and i am in north america aswell, and im a teenager... ofcourse i am going to push my vehicle to the limits... and i have fun doing it! i just saved up and got my self 2 sets of tires, summer/all seasons and another set on different rims with winter tires. it all depends on what kind of snow, ice, or any other terrain you are on. tires infact do, as you said help in diferent situations.
@kowal789 actually my first winter of driving back 8 or 9 years ago I got a set of studded snow tires for FREE from a friend of the family that just happened to wreck his car... the car i had at the time was a 1994 Olds Cutlass Ciera V6 and it was a tank on snow. If i could afford to have two sets of tires i would - for a rookie driver (no offense) its good to have the best you can get and if you have ABS brakes make sure you know how they work on snow cuz some cars go into ABS mode w/o warning
@mustang633NY well as me only having an intermediate, i am considered a rookie driver, but i have driven ever since i was about 7, when i got my 1st go kart and raced rookie for about 2 years on dirt. then, i got to work on a farm, and help operate many of the biggest farm equipment there is. and my 1st vehicle, is also infact an oldsmobile, cutlass supreme to be exact. 4 door, with the 305. the stock tires were fine, its just that a snow tire for anybody is more safe.
@mustang633NY and not to brag, but in almost all situations, i know how to maneuver a vehicle better then most for my age. and more then half the time, better then most adults. i have driven alot, and in every condition, dry, wet, icy, snowy. you just have to adjust your driving abilities to cope with the road conditions. drive accordingly and not much should happen. when a vehicle spins out, or gets crashes, usually its the driver trying to out drive their own capabilities of themselfs.
fist of all, winter tires = control on cold weather and snow NOT JUST snow. second of all make a realistic test with a FWD car or 4WD I don't really believe there are idiots that bring RWD cars in such conditions.
its common sense that winter tires are NEEDED in the snow, and using Summer tires put yourself and all other drivers at risk (especially bald summer tires, as I've seen here in NYC)... However... this test is retarded. Two different cars completely... A 6 series with 300+ horsepower at the rear wheels will have an issue. You should have gotten another 6 series and then mounted the other tires on it.
The 6 series struggled in the first test because it had been pulled in forwards, so it had no grooves to go in... the 1 series had been reversed in, so it didn't have pack the snow and had an easier time setting off...
im buying new alloys when my cars back on the road and im going to fit deep grooved winter tyres to the standard alloys. if your handy with a spanner they take a matter of minutes to change over and tyres specifically made for snow not just "all weather" are absolutely phenomenal on a front wheel drive car, i had them fitted on my 1994 corsa last winter and they got me to work at 3 in the morning every time
Rear wheel drive work just fine if you have good tyres and know how to drive. We have winter, with snow, for about 6 months a year and that doesn't stop us from driving. Often without fancy electronics but with good winter tyres, usually with studs too (don't give any advantage on snow but on ice). Been driving Volvo 140, 240 and 740 for many years without any problems ;-)
If you live in a place that has snow, you're really best off with two separate sets of wheels and maybe rims too. Good summer tyres and good winter tyres with studs. I never recommend all seasons, because they don't grip well in worst winter conditions and they're sloppy to drive in summer.
Very dangerous driving in poor properties of tires. Dangerous braking, then you go on the road, if the bus does not slow down spasobno.
Would have taken better Micheline.
And why judge srevnenie tires when you really understand what buksuet tires even if the ABS. Tires tires have chosen not correctament. vydet mean if you've already seen and now on the street
humm.. well the 1 series having "thinner" tyres as an advantage is silly. The wider the better as winter tyres use the grip resulting out of the combination of silica in the rubber mixture and the sipes cut into each tread block. The more sipes in the snow the more traction in the snow (up to the point where sipes no longer work and chains have to be mounted).
How about having a test between 2 identical cars, one with winter tyres on and one with summer tyres on instead of a test of 2 completely different cars one with summer tyres and one with all season tyres?.
I put winter tyres on my car this year and the difference was exceptional - my old man got stuck trying to come back up the drive, I didn't! In that test they were both driving like chumps I reckon, in both cases they were planting the accelerator which explains some of the spin. Also RWD will be more or less as good with the right tyres - plenty of people worldwide drive in snow with RWD vehicles with no issues.
Managed quite happily in the UK delivering for a pharmacy all through the snow on untreated roads with well worn but still legal normal tires on a current model berlingo van. Had no problems with my peugeot 106 diesel at home either but it is a base model so weighs the same as a tissue. Proper driving technique is everything in the snow which is why people who have low driving ability should stay off the road until its cleared for everyone elses sake!!!!
This may be somewhat true where you live, since you don't have much snow. But it's still risky to drive in snow with summer tires. In Canada All Season tires are a bare minimal, and actual Winter tires (usually studded) are highly recommended. Though it's much colder here, -20 and under, and we have a lot more show and ice.
@2008razvan british myself, but don't ask them about winter tires: they only know "allrounds". Once asked them if they didn't know winter tires looking at the chaos on their roads with 1/2 inch snow, answer was: "do you meen spikes?" They don't even know that you can/must start in 2nd or 3rd gear when driving on snow, as can be seen in this video
@inkey2 I live in MA and drive a rear wheel drive BMW with snow tires. I'm doing just fine. You dont know what the F you talkin about. I hate retards like you that say stupid sh*t, STFU guy.
@inkey2 dear sir or mam, ask ur self why there is better to understeer straight forwards in an FWD on snow instead of controlling an RWD drift and saving ur car for damages and or ur life?
i drive an 92' BMW without ESP and i feel perfectly safe due to that its rwd and easily controllable under understeer or oversteer. i gave under 2000 $ for mine, im not rich, and you apperantly dont know what ur talking about.
@inkey2 Ohh yea it’s really reckless. You better watch out for me on the streets man. IC, well clearly you're just jealous. That's cool, I don't blame you, but that comment has nothing to do with my point. You stated that driving a RWD is suicide in the winter. I’m saying it’s not, I don’t get stuck in snow with snow tires. Maybe a FWD drive is safer for a woman or a person who can’t drive, maybe you, but I’m not risking life and injury, that’s another stupid point.
@utrain12 I’m perfectly safe, I don’t go out on the roads and start driving 100mph in the snow. RWD with snow tires is perfectly fine in the winter. If anything it’s better than FWD because you’re more likely to drive more alert if you have a RWD. And next time just stick to the topic at hand, no one cares that you’re broke and why would I settle for a cheap car if I can afford something nice.
I'm guessing the 1 series is a manual. All automatics are crap on snow, ESP or not. It just can't get that smooth power feed. Also, the 6 series would have much wider tires, making it even harder for traction. They should have used two 1 series...
Have you ever seen winter tires? I dont think so ... Make a test again ... but this time compare these tires "Michelin Alpin A4"or "Debica Frigo 2" with summer tires ... you will see a real difference.
OK - so here's the deal. We're going to do a serious motoring test by comparing apples & pears and then we're going to post it on Youtube to completely waste everybody's time. Got that?
@SMITHY2010LS9 Not at all,the car is an automatic, and in drive it will send power to the wheels whenever the engine rpm is enough to get the torque converter to couple. On ice even idle speed will cause wheelspin. She should put in park when stopped.
@dieselboy77 I cant?? thats funny cause ive been doing it and will continue to till summer, a few sandbags in the back and some blizzaks and im good to go
Why has it taken so long for this country to cotton on to the fact that we could save millions of pounds every year if we all just changed our wheels over in the winter? I always have had a set of winter wheels in the shed ready to go every year. Of course they were only £45 a piece 5 years ago! I drive a 3 series BMW and have NEVER been stuck yet!
Large parts of upland britain (especially scotland) have a winter equivalent to central europe or scandinavia. You need winter tyres there.
Personally I live in southern lowland britain, and I put winter tyres on at the end of every november (they're actually better below 7C anyway). My job depends on me driving, and I have stayed mobile in the severe spells of all the last 3 winters. I have never once had to use the set of chains I also carry either.
@Spidybot this is true...my yoko's all weather advan s4 are great on rainy days...but not as good as my ex summer tires in the summer or dry days...and deff not good on snow since today I got stock lol (again) so...next time I have to change them will get good winter tires on stock rims and great summer tires on cool rims :)
@calibrazor Not really. They have much longer brake distance, and will wear up in no time.. The noise is actually lower due to the softer rubber compound.
No reason to bother with 'tests' like this. Plenty of other to choose from, like
UX1UmYG1nyk
Winter tyre Bottom line: Know your needs, get matching tires. In general stay away from Chinese, go for tires from makers that know snow: Nokian, Gislaved, Continental, Michelin. Think twice before getting studded tires. Just my 2 cents...
Because its clever to get that all essential grip so you can go faster in the snow isn't it? That way when you skid and crash into the poor guy in front who has finally managed to stop with his poor man's tyres on, you can explain its his fault....
Just don't even attempt going any further if the rest of the roads are like this, heard of walking?
what is stupid about this video, apart from the cars being completely 'identical' is that no winter tires are actually tested, just all weather and summer tires.
the best advise is not to get winter tyres, but just don't be an idiot and when driving on snow or ice just drive away in second or third without applying gas, just use the clutch. if not too slippery 1st without gas usually works fine too.
the comparison between the cars in this video is useless. should have fitted the same car with different tyres then same stretch of road...
@tri400 It depends, some people get winter tires, others get smaller steel rims and get winter tires on them because the smaller tire is cheaper. It is really up to the person.
@tri400 Almost every car owner here in Norway has 2 sets of wheels+tyres. Almost unheard of to see a used car for sale without 2 sets of wheels. usually the winter tyres (NOT the same as snow or studded tyres remember) are on cheap steel rims.
@raulucian If they were identical, why different series numbers? It should be 3 against 3 or six against 6. Also if one is a four door, the other one should be as well. It's identical, not similar.
How stupid is he? Two different cars, 1 front wheel drive, (front wheel drive is better in snow, everyone knows that. 2nd car has rear wheel drive, everyone knows rear wheel drive is harder to drive in snow!!! What a dickhead, hasn't a clue what he is talking about! Oh and one car is heavier than the other...
Stop pushing it!! The kitchen shouldn't move!

humm.. well the 1 series having "thinner" tyres as an advantage is silly.

@Jimmynoglue quite.

"These two completely identical BMWs" ... I think someone misunderstood what "identical".
An automatic 6 with summers against a manual 1 with all-seasons ... where do the winter tires come in again?

if you had the same exact cars the test would be much better

I put winter tyres on my car this year and the difference was exceptional - my old man got stuck trying to come back up the drive, I didn't! In that test they were both driving like chumps I reckon, in both cases they were planting the accelerator which explains some of the spin. Also RWD will be more or less as good with the right tyres - plenty of people worldwide drive in snow with RWD vehicles with no issues.

they said " winter tires" in the title.. but yet used "all season tires".. i expected an all season vs snow tires test...

Managed quite happily in the UK delivering for a pharmacy all through the snow on untreated roads with well worn but still legal normal tires on a current model berlingo van. Had no problems with my peugeot 106 diesel at home either but it is a base model so weighs the same as a tissue. Proper driving technique is everything in the snow which is why people who have low driving ability should stay off the road until its cleared for everyone elses sake!!!!
warwickstingray 1 year ago
This may be somewhat true where you live, since you don't have much snow. But it's still risky to drive in snow with summer tires. In Canada All Season tires are a bare minimal, and actual Winter tires (usually studded) are highly recommended. Though it's much colder here, -20 and under, and we have a lot more show and ice.

these are not winter tires. maybe only all-weather. Try the Bridgestone Blizzak. You will see the difference
2008razvan 1 year ago
@2008razvan british myself, but don't ask them about winter tires: they only know "allrounds". Once asked them if they didn't know winter tires looking at the chaos on their roads with 1/2 inch snow, answer was: "do you meen spikes?" They don't even know that you can/must start in 2nd or 3rd gear when driving on snow, as can be seen in this video

@inkey2 dear sir or mam, ask ur self why there is better to understeer straight forwards in an FWD on snow instead of controlling an RWD drift and saving ur car for damages and or ur life?
i drive an 92' BMW without ESP and i feel perfectly safe due to that its rwd and easily controllable under understeer or oversteer. i gave under 2000 $ for mine, im not rich, and you apperantly dont know what ur talking about.
snaken2 1 year ago
@inkey2 Ohh yea it’s really reckless. You better watch out for me on the streets man. IC, well clearly you're just jealous. That's cool, I don't blame you, but that comment has nothing to do with my point. You stated that driving a RWD is suicide in the winter. I’m saying it’s not, I don’t get stuck in snow with snow tires. Maybe a FWD drive is safer for a woman or a person who can’t drive, maybe you, but I’m not risking life and injury, that’s another stupid point.
utrain12 1 year ago
@utrain12 I’m perfectly safe, I don’t go out on the roads and start driving 100mph in the snow. RWD with snow tires is perfectly fine in the winter. If anything it’s better than FWD because you’re more likely to drive more alert if you have a RWD. And next time just stick to the topic at hand, no one cares that you’re broke and why would I settle for a cheap car if I can afford something nice.
utrain12 1 year ago
@utrain12 That’s why I went to school so that I could enjoy the finer things in life and you’re just a jealous. I love people like you.

@inkey2 huh, that must explain why i get around with no problems with my rwd car in Alaska. Both cars in the video are "rear wheel drive", btw.

guitarsnowmobiler 1 year ago 2
I'm guessing the 1 series is a manual. All automatics are crap on snow, ESP or not. It just can't get that smooth power feed. Also, the 6 series would have much wider tires, making it even harder for traction. They should have used two 1 series...

@SMITHY2010LS9 Not at all,the car is an automatic, and in drive it will send power to the wheels whenever the engine rpm is enough to get the torque converter to couple. On ice even idle speed will cause wheelspin. She should put in park when stopped.

Why the hell do they use all weather tires as winter tires? They suck all year round.
bimse111 1 year ago

Winter tires are no good in summer weather
All-Weather tires are no good in all weather.
Sad but true.
Spidybot 1 year ago 3
@Spidybot this is true...my yoko's all weather advan s4 are great on rainy days...but not as good as my ex summer tires in the summer or dry days...and deff not good on snow since today I got stock lol (again) so...next time I have to change them will get good winter tires on stock rims and great summer tires on cool rims :)
insonita55 1 year ago
@Spidybot winter tires are good in summer weather too, but they make annoying noise and it will grind faster
calibrazor 1 year ago
@calibrazor Not really. They have much longer brake distance, and will wear up in no time.. The noise is actually lower due to the softer rubber compound.
bimse111 1 year ago
@Spidybot
All wheater tires are more like average in summer and winter.
Airox2009 1 year ago
No reason to bother with 'tests' like this. Plenty of other to choose from, like
UX1UmYG1nyk
Winter tyre Bottom line: Know your needs, get matching tires. In general stay away from Chinese, go for tires from makers that know snow: Nokian, Gislaved, Continental, Michelin. Think twice before getting studded tires. Just my 2 cents...

Omega08082 1 year ago
I live in Noway, and I can say for a fact; yes, witer tyres (proper ones) work.
jurgemaister 1 year ago 2
Because its clever to get that all essential grip so you can go faster in the snow isn't it? That way when you skid and crash into the poor guy in front who has finally managed to stop with his poor man's tyres on, you can explain its his fault....
Just don't even attempt going any further if the rest of the roads are like this, heard of walking?
cruzieal1 1 year ago
Might of been a better test if the th 'drivers' knew how to drive on snow!!!
TheRgm61 1 year ago
Just do it on identical cars guys, so that we can believe the difference - is that so hard for a group as big as "Autocar" ????
kipp0man 1 year ago
what is stupid about this video, apart from the cars being completely 'identical' is that no winter tires are actually tested, just all weather and summer tires.
raulucian 1 year ago
the best advise is not to get winter tyres, but just don't be an idiot and when driving on snow or ice just drive away in second or third without applying gas, just use the clutch. if not too slippery 1st without gas usually works fine too.
the comparison between the cars in this video is useless. should have fitted the same car with different tyres then same stretch of road...
weebl15 1 year ago
Perhaps the 6 series would do better if you move off in 2nd and don't rev it!!!!

do Europeans keep 4 extra wheels in their houses (with winter tyres on them) or 4 extra winter tyres?
tri400 1 year ago
@tri400 It depends, some people get winter tires, others get smaller steel rims and get winter tires on them because the smaller tire is cheaper. It is really up to the person.
gogors4 1 year ago
@tri400 Almost every car owner here in Norway has 2 sets of wheels+tyres. Almost unheard of to see a used car for sale without 2 sets of wheels. usually the winter tyres (NOT the same as snow or studded tyres remember) are on cheap steel rims.
stuinNorway 1 year ago 2
Two identical BMWs? The last time I checked, identical meant the same. They're not even the same series!
jpatt1000 1 year ago 2
@jpatt1000
I think you're wrong, everybody knows the 6'series are identical with the 3'series.
raulucian 1 year ago
@raulucian If they were identical, why different series numbers? It should be 3 against 3 or six against 6. Also if one is a four door, the other one should be as well. It's identical, not similar.

@jpatt1000 I was being ironic, of course they are different
