todays kids are missing out on such a wonderful music tradition.....these old songs are absolute classics....i grew up listening to them, and whenever i hear them again, its just like my first time hearing them....
Thank you so much for sharing this song -- I was wondering who was doing the instigating on this song -- thank you for giving props to Ms. Rose Marie McCoy. I love love love Big Maybelle and cannot fathom why she is NOT IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME!
Another of Maybelle's songwriters is much more famous/infamous: Clarence Reid was Maybelle's labelmate on Rojac Records, her last label, while Reid was on Rojac subsidiary, Tayster Records. Due to contractual obligations at his former label, Reid was not able to use his name on his composiitons as songwriter, including Maybelle's latter signature song, "Do Not Pass Me By" which was picked up by Chess Records for national distribution. Clarence Reid is known to YouTube as XXX rapper "Blowfly."
"Gabbin' Blues" is performed here by Big Maybelle & Rose Marie McCoy. McCoy is the songwriter of this tune, which was both Maybelle and McCoy's first big hit as singer and songwriter respectively. McCoy went on to write hits for Elvis Presley and many others, becoming one of the first promiment female songwriters of the 50's and 60's, including the 60's Grammy nominated "I Thnk It's Gonna Work Out Fine" by Ike & Tina Turner.
@KojiRecords I performed with Madame Rose Marie McCoy when she was inducted into the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame! She is a real sweetheart! Thanks for sharing!!
*smiling*....My niece is 22 years old now. But when she was about 8 I played this song and she would just crack up through the whole thing. Needless to say, every time she came past my house to visit I would have to play this song. Great post of a great song...thank you!
I first heard this song, my introduction to the grea Big Maybelle, on a compilation disc I found in college in '71. Immediately I began a quest to obtain all of her recordings. Strangely enough, I still haven't found her only song to hit the charts..."96 Tears". Anyone know where to find it?

I had this song on a 78. I sure am glad I now have a clean-er version, the 78 was noisy.

WRONG!! Her pop hit was "I Cried A Tear." The song "96 Tears" was done in the 60s by ? & The Mysterians
bangkokianbanger 4 years ago
WRONG! Maybelle did a cover version of ? and the Mysterians' song. IT WAS HER ONLY RECORDING TO HIT THE CHARTS. Believe me, I'm SURE.
muchamp 4 years ago
In fact you are right. Maybelle did 96 Tears in 1967 and it was LaVern Baker that did the song "I Cried A Tear."
My bad...
