Well Debbie, you have a dedicated and loving fan base, and admiring newcomers, I imagine you are smiling ear from ear, I would be! Its nice to be loved!
how shocking was this for people back in the 70's who were only used to shit music like lynyrd skynyrd or pink floyd, debbie grabbed music by the balls :0
No female singer can match her. Also had a fantastic band. Clem Burke is brilliant drummer. Music is so manufactured now. All the chart is is an extension of the x factor. Blondie and many groups in the past had to work many years before the fame. Even if i was a teenager now i would not like todays music. Sorry its boring, no soul, no edgyness, DULL
Straight from the Bowery, New YOrk City, birthplace of punk, inspiration for millions, this is the real thing! BLONDIE, THE RAMONES, IGGY POP, TELEVISION, PATTI SMITH.... One of my all time favourites, PUNK ROCK!!!
All you Debbie lovers. She can go from Denis and Heart of Glass to this in a second. (I was careful not to say heartbeat...) I found a picture of her performing at CBGB's and she's lying on her left side propped up on elbow and hip on the stage floor wearing knee high boots, panties, shirt and mike. Would LOVE to see that vid if there is one!!!
i was lucky enough to have heard this song, when i bought the reord based on the cover. when i DID hear this,,,and knowing music (read my bio)..i thought to meself..
this fuxing band is incredible..and i mean,, this is not your typical shit. they played the Starwood in LA soon after,,and i was stnading there,,less than 6 feet from her & band..and the power precision they showed, was spectacular. it's NOT punk.it's the best Power-POP ever. & debbie and her dedication to her man, is true love.
I seems to me that many musicians missed the whole point of Debbies music, most don't understand what it means to be free, nor have the will to strive for it!
Debbie Harry is legend. So is Clem Burke and Chris Stein and Jimmy Destri. Those guys WERE Blondie. And they have been thru alot. Was the keyboardist not with them when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I seem to remember they're being some bad blood...
Man they were so awesome when they did stuff like this. Why did they even bother with the bubble-gum songs like "Sunday Girl" and "Denis" when they were capable of "Accidents Never Happen", "Union City Blue", "Dreaming", "Eat To The Beat", "Victor", "Hangin on the Telephone", and "The Hardest Part"?
Because they would be bored doing the same songs with the same tempo. They have always been the band to mix things up! Sunday Girl is pop but how many bands do you know can write Sunday Girl AND Detroit 442 just one album apart? And speaking of their "bubblegum" songs, nothing is bad when it's done right!
I have to admit I didnt come accross punk until 1977 and it was already there for a few years wasnt it.? I didnt hear of Blondie until 1978 when Denis was a hit.
1977 was the Punk time, not post, it ended 2 February 1979 with the death of Sid, Blondie broke in Europe before the USA, this is taken from their second album Plastic Letters, an my gawd she looks amazin, there is no one in popular music more beautiful than Debbie, have uz checked In the Flesh video
wow U say that about sid, I met him in London in 75 when he worked in the Sex Shop, Nancy destroyed him, met him again in 78 in NY with her and he was a changed man, he was punk, the very meaning of it and when he died so did punk, but then you prob didnt grow up in london during that time, sid was original and its a shame he died,
ur talkin about american punk, I know that a lot of the younger generation who were not around for punk in the uk from 1975/79 believe they know everything there is to know about it, it time, and who was an who wasent punk, but history and fact and that I lived through it gives me some measure of knowing, in those days punk was about the youth culture n the system it was very different to the USA, a time that wont ever be re visited, its a pity that you consider Sid in such a low term
@anthonynewsome - Sid was destroyed long before Nancy. His mother was one of the most evil women ever to have lived (according to my landlady, who knew her when she was with Chris Beverly).
in 75 when Sid worked at SEX he was a very quite lad, when he joined the Pistols in 76 he was still a very decent guy who you could talk to, then when Nancy arrived on the scene everything changed with Sid, she brought drugs into his world and caused a lot of trouble within the band, Sid never displayed any issues with me prior to Nancy, so what ever effect his Mother had on his life up to 74/75/76 was not very apparent, however that could not be said when Nancy arrived, jeezzz Debbie is amazin

I love early blondie but this is just like early Cure, just plain bad. Sorry this song is garbage and is an example of a band finding it's sound. This one shows they hadnt found it yet.
Yes you are DEFINITELY in the minority in thinking this song is garbage, in fact you are the very first person EVER to comment about this song being bad that I know of.
Yep, Debbie DID EVERYTHING FIRST! None of the today's female "popstars" have anything on Debbie Harry. And ya know they all wish They were Debbie! 'Detroit 442'....One of my favs from 'Plastic Letters', 1977.
Debbie Harry did EVERYTHING before lady gaga, madonna, gwen, courtney love, etc. Any female singer with true artistic merit and a highly visual presence can trace her roots back to this icon!
@guyinsf I wonder how Kim Carnes and the woman half her age now will look as good when they get her age now? 95 percent of them will not even touch her looks. The only ones that still look good from the 70's are Debbie Harry and Suzie Quatro.
The ones from even the 80's are looking like shriveled up dogs now.
And Debbie did it with class and edge, miss googoo gaagaa, like madonna, pink, fergie and most other pop acts, always look forced and like they're trying too hard to be cool.

I find it kinda stupid (but cute) that she calls a four-forty-two a four-four-two. Only an art student from New York would call a legendary piece of Detroit iron by the wrong name trying to be cool. Hot look, though, and I like the sentiment.
U could see her outfit in a current fashion spread because what she's wearing was modern, edgy, ahead of its time and timeless and her clothes were always simple. She never had to accessorize like crazy like Gwen or J. Lo or Madonna.
Blondie is absolutely incredible. i LOVE their punk stuff, like this. they were real pioneers for bands like Paramore. Hayley owes a LOT to Debbie Harry.
Watching her in this video makes me realize that she's even more punk the the most punked out performers you could think of...like Sid, Patti or Souxsie because it's so easy to be punk and egdy when you have a rough and not so attractive look but to be as hot as and feminine as she is and still come off as punk is just not that easy.
incredible sexy and hot. its a pity that Blondie didn't play more of these hard new wave punk songs. they deviated from this style of music too quickly, imo. i know that their best years came a few years later but, man, this song rocks and i wish they wrote more of this style of music.
gosh me too! i love this song! im bored of listening to heart of glass. dont worry there is still a chance of them writing new songs like this cuz they still play you know!
Guapisima, admirable, estupenda, inimitable, original, preciosa, autentica, excelente, unica, irrepetible, bonita, hermosa, adorable, y muchas mas cosas que no me caben aqui.
i saw them do this for $3.00 to get in a small club in LA in 1977....i thought i was seeing marilyn monroe on meth do the best damn rock show i'd ever seen or heard.
after i saw her do an hour set right in fornt of me...i went and stole the very first advertising poster she made for i think... broadwalk records?, right off the wall,, and walked out...she has a see-through black top on that was quickly banned around 1977?? i had to have it and...i still have it. i remeber thinking,,,,,,so rock and roll now has to stoop to sex.
Avril is an extragalactic turd unconvincingly wrapped in a sack of imitation human skin bought at a flea market on an asteroid orbiting Epsilon Eridani.
Her popularity is all an Andromedan prank... and we fell for it.
If blondie and crew went this direction and x-offender style they'd be my favorite band for sure, even with the occasional heart of glass, and rapture
I agree some of the their all time best came from the Plastic letters lp, Youth sniped as sniper is my favorite blondie punk song and along with this song are 2 of the most underrated songs of the punk era. However, if blondie only made Detroit 442-ish songs, they would have ended up being no more than another cult band with a pretty singer. HOG, rapture, atomic, dreaming, etc is what gave them international appeal and rock and roll fall of fame worthiness.
Yes but not on a level that they eventually achieved. Their total sales up to date is between 40-50 million albums. No way they could have come close to that number had they only released punk singles. The Ramones, as legendary as they are, never sold that many records either because they stuck to the same formula for their entire career. Don't get me wrong cuz I LOVE their first 2 LPs but it's the big radio singles that catapulted them to international stardom.
This is the best track on the under-rated Plastic Letters. There certainly are some gems on that LP for sure. I'm on E, Youth Nabbed as Sniper, just to name a few!
And who couldn't just love Denis (where Debbie sings in French which is so cute and sexy) and I Didn't Had The Nerve To Say No, easily the catchiest organ chorus...
I love Plastic Letters - its probably their best album cos its so raw; what with this, Youth Nabbed As Sniper, bratty Debbie on I didnt have the Nerve To Say No, and Fan Mail, its a great punk record. And of course theres Denis, a perfect pop song and Debbie in a swimsuit in the vid ;)
The queen of all that is punk looking and sounding her best. Avril LAvigine, Hayley Williams and all the other wannabe manufactured pop tarts that claim to be "punk" cant hold a candle to Debbie.
Those guys in Blondie must have thought they died and went to heaven scoring such a babe for the band. Ex-Playboy bunny with a voice wanting to front the band.
Well Debbie, you have a dedicated and loving fan base, and admiring newcomers, I imagine you are smiling ear from ear, I would be! Its nice to be loved!

@Aztrid90 WRONG!! Avril, Debbie, Siouxsie, and Dale Bozzio rock my fuckin' world!!!

What's the significance of 442? The Detroit area code was 313 back then.

maybe oldsmobile 442

Anyway, it's a blasphemy to compare avril to Debbie Harry!
I love this song! Makes me wanna jump!

Avril is an extragalactic turd unconvincingly wrapped in a sack of imitation human skin bought at a flea market on an asteroid orbiting Epsilon Eridani.
Her popularity is all an Andromedan prank... and we fell for it.

Tariq, your comment is epic. I'm still laughing my ass off.

If blondie and crew went this direction and x-offender style they'd be my favorite band for sure, even with the occasional heart of glass, and rapture
ZakAttack360 3 years ago 3
Yeah, I TOTALLY agree. This is Blondie at their absolute peak!
JasonBNYC 3 years ago 3
I agree some of the their all time best came from the Plastic letters lp, Youth sniped as sniper is my favorite blondie punk song and along with this song are 2 of the most underrated songs of the punk era. However, if blondie only made Detroit 442-ish songs, they would have ended up being no more than another cult band with a pretty singer. HOG, rapture, atomic, dreaming, etc is what gave them international appeal and rock and roll fall of fame worthiness.
doetim 3 years ago
bullshit,as one who saw her live in 1978 in oakland, they would have made it ALSO if they only played songs like detroit 442!!!
healthier2008 3 years ago 3
Yes but not on a level that they eventually achieved. Their total sales up to date is between 40-50 million albums. No way they could have come close to that number had they only released punk singles. The Ramones, as legendary as they are, never sold that many records either because they stuck to the same formula for their entire career. Don't get me wrong cuz I LOVE their first 2 LPs but it's the big radio singles that catapulted them to international stardom.

Fucking great song, one of the best on Plastic Letters (full of others gems)
Brigidelle 3 years ago
This is the best track on the under-rated Plastic Letters. There certainly are some gems on that LP for sure. I'm on E, Youth Nabbed as Sniper, just to name a few!
80sOldSkool 3 years ago
And who couldn't just love Denis (where Debbie sings in French which is so cute and sexy) and I Didn't Had The Nerve To Say No, easily the catchiest organ chorus...
You're right, SO under-rated!
Long live Blondie
Brigidelle 3 years ago
