@jmr1068204 if you haven't yet learn the minor pentatonic scale which will get you started, you just to be in the right key. From there start making up your own licks or start taking some from the greats like bb king, eric clapton, albert king etc.

Awesome playing. What always confuses me is...how do you know "what to play" when improvising blues songs and licks? I haven't played electric much (I've played acoustic for 10 years). I still am not good enough to really just improvise a jazz tune longer than probably 15 seconds. Even then...that 15 seconds may take me hours to figure out what sounds good together. Are these patterns that you've practiced, or is it all improvisation? How do you figure out what notes sound best together?

@jmr1068204 here's an easy lesson...play open eminor pentatonic scale over e7 chord blues vamp....you can't go wrong....then, learn some licks in that key/open position...ex. John Lee Hooker's "boom boom boom." then use the lisck however you want/transform them. You'd be suprised about how many premutations of a single melody you can come up with. Blues is whatever you want from a few scales interlinked. And yes, you can learn it from tab, but it is always best to change or add bits - so as to express your own musical soul, not just the predecessors.
