@yamsid That was part of the film's larger theme of self-acceptance. Over the film, the actors finally accept being typecast, whether in real combat or when making appearances. This is actually a great sci-fi film in its own right.

@deriter64 I thought the theme was pretty obvious, and likely based on Leonard Nimoy's two books. His first was "I Am Not Spock," and then, twenty years later, he wrote "I Am Spock."

It's a shame the Academy doesn't take this type of film as seriously as it should, as it deserved at least a Best Picture nomination. I can't find a single flaw in this incredibly well-constructed film.

@BettorOffSingle One indicator of the truth of what you say is Sigourney Weaver's performance. I'm a Weaver fan and appreciate most of her work but I don't think I ever outright enjoyed her on screen as much as in Galaxy Quest., Humor has always been a factor in good sci fi, from Tribbles to Larry Niven's bandersnatches and other incredible creatures. I can remember laughing happily at some of the work in Galaxy, If, and other periodicals when I as young. For instance Gentlemen Be Seated. Best.
